To say this even though I will get flamed for it?

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. However, I am asthmatic. Numerous studies have shown a link between bleach and lung diseases. Thanks to a Christmas Eve bleach the house session I am now on Day 3 of difficulties in breathing.

You are sensible adults, if you feel ill- see a doctor. However, if I help anyone to prevent harming their lungs by switching to gentler cleaning fluids then it will be worth getting my arse handed to me.

Before you buy the bleach ask yourself if a different product might be healthier for you and your family. In these dangerous times, any little change might make a difference.

I don't understand - this is well known isn't it? Bleach is a strong chemical. Damaging to people using it and the environment. I try to avoid it for usual cleaning but don't feel my toilet is clean without a splash of bleach!

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 30/12/2020 09:34

I have to say I don't really understand people who "bleach the house". Bleach doesn't get used anywhere in my house besides the bathroom. I think this Instagram cleaning trend has a lot to answer for in terms of overuse of strong chemicals.

MynephewR · 30/12/2020 09:34

I never use bleach. Which parts of your house were you bleaching? I don't even know what you're supposed to bleach, other than the toilet (but I don't). The only thing I've ever bleached is my hair Grin

Poorlykitten · 30/12/2020 09:37

Don’t use bleach, except very occasionally down the loo. Who bleaches their whole house regularly? Is that really a thing?

CaramelCandle · 30/12/2020 09:37

I tend to use flash for most cleaning, have bleach in the cupboard for occasional use. Always open the windows after using it though.

WilheminaVenable · 30/12/2020 09:40

I’m too paranoid about wiping it off properly to use bleach on anything but the toilet and in the sink Grin

SoupDragon · 30/12/2020 09:44

Thanks to a Christmas Eve bleach the house session

Why on earth are you bleaching your house?

Anyway, surely it's not rocket science that bleach gives off fumes that you shouldn't be breathing in. Especially in large quantities.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/12/2020 09:46

We keep a cloth in a week bleach solution for wiping deliveries. Occasionally a squirt in the loo. That's it. How much bleach do you have to use for it to harm you? I don't like the smell and I'm wary of how strong it it though.

HelloDulling · 30/12/2020 09:46

I only ever bleach my loo (and my hair).

Timeforabiscuit · 30/12/2020 09:48

YANBU at all - I'm stunned by the number of people who don't read the instructions on cleaning products and merrily mix their own household chemicals to make their own unique one.

I did a module in air pollution in the home and the take away was that so many modern furnishings are bathed in chemicals for good reason (fire retardants, pest control, mould suppression, preservative) - that it is really important to air out homes regularly. I'm cautious with chemicals generally - but splashing air freshener and bleach seems over the top, when what you need is fresh air and sunlight.

Royalbloo · 30/12/2020 09:48

Eww I hate bleach

Royalbloo · 30/12/2020 09:49

A lady died mixing chemicals www.thesun.co.uk/news/uknews/12373009/woman-died-cleaning-products-bathroom-surrey/

A Christmas Eve bleach the house session? We just leave a mince pie out, and a carrot for Rudolph.

Poetnojo · 30/12/2020 09:51

I have just bought myself a hypochlorous acid generator. It makes your own cleaner and disinfectant thats as effective as bleach, can be used as hand sanitizer and is totally safe and non toxic using only salt and water, sounds like magic beans but the science is there to back it up. It will also mean less plastic bottles in this house.

Friendswithwhenifits · 30/12/2020 09:52

It was mould removal in the bathroom. I know multiple people-including close family members who are convinced that bleach kills all germs and is the only “proper” way to clean. Hence this post.

Got it on Amazon, should be here in a day or 2.

AnnabelDickson · 30/12/2020 09:55

I knew a lady who would bleach everything, including cups. Mmmmm, bleachy tea Grin

Mintjulia · 30/12/2020 10:00

This is well documented so bleach is used sparingly.

I use a diluted bleach spray if I get mould on window frames, use bleach in the loo and occasionally use a capful when washing sheets. But I've never bleached a house (?) and always leave a window open in case of times.

If you are worried about Covid on surfaces and door handles, a diluted disinfectant is just as effective.

ichundich · 30/12/2020 10:00

I hardly ever use bleach other than down the loo occasionally and to get rid of mould. It's not only bad for your own health but also very harmful to aquatic life. I have also ruined a few of my clothes and bathroom fixtures with bleach in the past. Washing-up liquid and vinegar gets removes dirt and kills germs just fine.

KeyWorker · 30/12/2020 10:01

I’m another that doesn’t really understand what people who “bleach the house” actually do. I have never used bleach anywhere except inside the toilet bowl.

Quarantino · 30/12/2020 10:01

Loads of non-bleach cleaning products are "harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects" - it's why I don't use Fairy washing up liquid any more Sad

Not because I'm a cuddly old hippy who wuvs the fishy-wishies but because fecking up our ecosystem is terrible for us humans too.

I don't use bleach either as I find it unnecessary and also have ruined clothes with bleach spots!

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/12/2020 10:01

We sometimes get mold in the bathroom. I put a teaspoon in lid and use an old toothbrush to give the mold a quick scrub. The the room (with the window open) for 10 minutes and then rinse with the shower head. No bad chest.

Sittinginmyoodie · 30/12/2020 10:02

How much bleach are you using OP?!
