To say this even though I will get flamed for it?

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. However, I am asthmatic. Numerous studies have shown a link between bleach and lung diseases. Thanks to a Christmas Eve bleach the house session I am now on Day 3 of difficulties in breathing.

You are sensible adults, if you feel ill- see a doctor. However, if I help anyone to prevent harming their lungs by switching to gentler cleaning fluids then it will be worth getting my arse handed to me.

Before you buy the bleach ask yourself if a different product might be healthier for you and your family. In these dangerous times, any little change might make a difference.

I don't use bleach for this reason.

Many people don't know it and still use too much. It is less widely used in commercial cleaning now though which protects those workers at least.

NoProblem123 · 30/12/2020 10:29

Why use bleach when you can sparkle your senses with Zoflora Flowers

LH1987 · 30/12/2020 10:30

I’ve only used it in the toilet but you have made me think as both my bathrooms are windowless. Thank you.

aintnothinbutagstring · 30/12/2020 10:30

It's only the bathroom that I use bleach, actually the sprays with limescale remover are better down here with hard water. I don't use air freshener either as they make my eyes itch. Don't use much in the kitchen apart from a basic kitchen spray (no bleach). Don't use disinfectant. Artificial fragrances seem to have a worse affect on me than anything else.

Marchitectmummy · 30/12/2020 10:32

Bleech is just one polluter indoors, rather than not use beech just open windows, everyday at least an hour to air the house. From paint to expelling air are dreadful for your lungs / well being. It always amazes me how few windows are opened in houses / offices in tbe summer let alone winter.

10kaDay · 30/12/2020 10:33

I used a bit of bleach for cleaning for 1st time in my life in the first few weeks of coronavirus... when there was more concern around transmission via surfaces. Managed to ruin multiple pieces of clothing so stopped

It’s very cheap compared to other products, but yes, very bad for you to breathe in the fumes

Lalliella · 30/12/2020 10:33

Why did you bleach your house on Christmas Eve is you know it makes you feel ill? 🤦‍♀️

Lalliella · 30/12/2020 10:34

*if not is

Friendswithwhenifits · 30/12/2020 10:34

Yes I do know it’s chlorine. However, as mojo said the hypochlorous acid generator is made with salt and water. There are different compounds of Chlorine; some of which are more toxic than others

@SimonJT

I thought this was fairly well known about bleach?

I don’t use any cleaning products that are harmful to aquatic life, luckily there are more product options now.

Can you recommend brands?

Really trying to mostly use washing up liquid and plain French savon de maison (or whatever that plain white block of household soap is called).

Any known negatives of bicarb of soda?

Xerochrysum · 30/12/2020 10:36

Sorry, most people know that the bleach is dangerous. That's why it has warning on the bottle, like wear protection, and open windows.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 30/12/2020 10:37

I don’t use bleach much. I don’t like the smell particularly. I however love Dettol, the original brown liquid and use it diluted for most things where a proper clean is necessary.

To be fair I know people who say they’re ‘bleaching the house’ when they don’t mean that they just mean cleaning. My friend said to be careful she’d just bleached the counter but she’d used that Koh stuff. Think it’s just to some become a term for sanitised in some way.

Emmelina · 30/12/2020 10:38

Bleach always sets my asthma off, especially when I was a kid. We use method for most cleaning now.

Camomila · 30/12/2020 10:41

I sometimes put a spot of bleach on white clothes to get stains out, apart from that I only use it in the bathroom and occasionally in the (old, white) kitchen sink.

IdblowJonSnow · 30/12/2020 10:42

I use a tiny bit of bleach on my kitchen sink and taps every month or two.
And down the loo once or twice a week. I knew it was harmful if you breathe it in etc.
Some people may not be so no harm in posting OP!

Beautifulbonnie · 30/12/2020 10:43

@Poetnojo

Holy crap. That’s good!!!! I’m getting one. I didn’t even know there existed!

Candyfloss99 · 30/12/2020 10:44

Who could cope with the smell of bleaching a house? It's so obviously bad for you.

Blondiney · 30/12/2020 10:45

A woman I used to work with wiped down all her surfaces, skirting boards, doors, window frames with a bleach solution every week. Her house reeked!

SimonJT · 30/12/2020 10:45

@ButwhereisMYcoffee

Well I tend to no longer use dishwasher tabs, I discovered by accident that they are just as clean without if you use a hot setting.

I use bar washing up ‘liquid’, but faith in nature, bio-d, ecover and method are all okay.

umpteennamechanges · 30/12/2020 10:45

@AnnabelDickson

I knew a lady who would bleach everything, including cups. Mmmmm, bleachy tea Grin

Do you know my Nan? Grin

She puts her tea cups in bleach once a week.

eddiemairswife · 30/12/2020 10:45

We made chlorine in chemistry in the good old days. Lab filled with a greenish mist, and we spent the next period (RE with the Head) coughing. She was not pleased.

CounsellorTroi · 30/12/2020 10:46

Scented candles and plug in air fresheners are another source of pollution in the home.

chomalungma · 30/12/2020 10:47

You can just use a solution of washing powder and water to clean if you want.

Just as effective.

Quarantino · 30/12/2020 10:49

Are steriliser tabs the same sort of thing as bleach? I could probably find this out myself but being lazy and hadn't thought about it before!
