AIBU to be disappointed in Bridgerton?

I love costume dramas and was excited when I heard there was a new one on Netflix. But it’s awful! I can’t watch it- the costumes, the dialogue, the plot are all completely implausible and unconvincing. Anyone else feel the same?

GAVEL!

Duke of Hastings for the new James Bond?

GoldfishParade · 03/01/2021 10:34

@Mumsnut
Naaaah. He looks too much like a nice person. Bond needs to feel a bit remote.

ZenNudist · 03/01/2021 10:40

Its shit but YABU to be disappointed. The writing was on the wall, this was always going to be utter trash.

planningaheadtoday · 03/01/2021 10:59

It appeared to be a historical Mills and Boon type American interpretation of historical England. Cheesy, flouncy, completely inaccurate but a bit of harmless fun.

I think it's because our BBC adaptations are so well executed and historically accurate that this looks gauche and over the top.

I enjoyed it for the entertainment factor whilst pulling it's huge inaccuracies to shreds. From set design, to speech, to historic detail to dress, all hideously wrong.

But, it was fun and it was designed to entertain. It did.

RollOnForever · 03/01/2021 11:04

I did end up fast forwarding all the sex scenes! Waaaaaay too many and frankly I'm not interested in watching someone that isn't me shagging the Duke. Grin

longwayoff · 03/01/2021 11:35

Agreed, RollOnForever surplus shagging boring for a mainly female audience if comments on here are anything to go by. It's distracting, not in a good way but in an irritating way. Who's it for? Does anyone find it 'essential to the plot'?

TheKeatingFive · 03/01/2021 12:01

It’s fun and frothy. The Gossip Girl/Hollyoaks vibe is strong. If you’re looking for Austen, this isn’t it.

I’m not quite as blown away as I’d hoped but the costumes and settings are exquisite, the men are hot (shout out to the lovely Colin Bridgerton, while the Duke gets all the attention) and I’m enjoying some of the performances a lot (Nicola Coughlan is wonderful).

The colour blind casting works just fine, I didn’t need the explanation though.

My biggest gripe is that Eloise is an awful bore. I’ve loved that actress in other stuff, but the character is just too irritating.

MariaAngustias · 09/01/2021 09:00

I thought it was quite a plodding period drama up until episode 6 when it bizarrely turned into a soft porn version of Downton Abbey. Totally unbelievable storyline but still I am really enjoying the ridiculousness of it all.

BubblyBarbara · 15/01/2021 21:55

I am watching it right now and it is disgusting. I am going to turn it off if there are any more dirty scenes like I have been seeing so far

AppleKatie · 15/01/2021 22:19

😂 prob best if you turn it now then!

lunalulu · 18/01/2021 00:32

The sexual awakening is grim.

Totally unnecessary.

DeeCeeCherry · 18/01/2021 01:04

Its a fun and enjoyable diverse period drama, those complaining of the black characters are often very fragile people. People also seem to forget that there were black people in the regency period, there was a black duke called Alessandro de' Medici who was the Duke of Penn and the 1st Duke of Florence. Whether the casting was ‘colour-conscious' or ‘colour-blind casting’ (hate that phrase) it doesn’t really matter does it. The only thing I found annoying was Eloise, anyway loved it!

Agree. All the fragility about diverse casting🙄. Looking up QC's royalty/lineage shows strong indication she has African heritage anyway.

Eloise is miscast. From 1st episode I was wondering why a grown woman was cast as a very young woman. She doesn't look young she's just dressed young. & Her voice is deep - she has the voice of an adult, by the timbre I wondered if she smokes too.

LochJessMonster · 18/01/2021 01:08

I thought it was fun. Loved the ‘gossip girl’ narrator.
Binged it in a few days, can’t wait for the next series to explore the other characters

echt · 18/01/2021 01:43

While utter tosh, I still couldn't get past Hasting wearing riding boots to a ball. Twice. Nor the wearing of a an evident ball gown in day time by Daphne, as well as uncovered arms and bosom in the day. And no sodding bonnets.

Worse than Game of Thrones where no-one of importance to the plot wears headgear north of The Wall, except Gendry, being a shandy-drinking southern softy and all that.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 18/01/2021 01:50

Historically nonsensical but utterly fabulous!

IdblowJonSnow · 18/01/2021 02:21

Absolutely loved it. Just accepted it for what it is rather than a serious drama. Brilliant escapism, beautiful characters and costumes. Can't wait for the next series.

user1471582494 · 18/01/2021 03:02

I loved the costumes and the music but the story was very problematic.
I enjoyed the first half but after they got married I got frustrated at their toxic relationship.

MusicalTrifleMonkey · 18/01/2021 03:12

I couldn’t finish it!

It was awful I thought, beautiful but terrible storyline. The female protagonist was daft. BUT totally agree that the Duke was worth watching a few episodes for..

Dasher789 · 18/01/2021 04:05

I was really disappointed too and felt the storyline got more and more ridiculous. To me, it was a poor man's gossip girl and I didn't understand the need for the diverse cast. Saying that though, I had never heard of the books until after I began watching it and I didn't know about the person who created the show being keen on colourblind casting until this thread. Maybe if I knew more about it to start with I might have understood it better. I had expected a period drama and its basically a period soap op

Pyewhacket · 18/01/2021 04:06

Total woke bollocks.

BlackCatShadow · 18/01/2021 04:27

It was bonkers but I couldn’t stop watching it.

Jellington · 18/01/2021 05:39

It was fine. It was a reasonable watch (I skipped through some of it). Will I watch the next series? Yes probably. Do I understand why everyone seems to be completely bonkers over it? Absolutely not. I can only assume it's a side effect of lockdown and perhaps some people are feeling bored or sex and drama starved.

Donotdelete · 18/01/2021 08:03

I like Shonda Rimes and enjoyed some of her other series. Bridgeton was good fun. It October me that if your history involved pain and abuse, rewriting that history with the life that you (as a black person) should have had might bring a little healing? I could be wrong and prepared to get flamed for this. Anyway, do you think that is what she is doing?

Donotdelete · 18/01/2021 08:03

*It occurred

Donotdelete · 18/01/2021 08:05

Either way, I really enjoy seeing a better mix of people on TV, keep it going!
