Inspired by another thread about how often people change furniture/soft furnishing/electrical items and then sell on - I looked round my house.....
In dining room everything is second hand, in lounge only thing bought new is a shelving unit from IKEA
In my bedroom only the mattress and a chest of drawers from IKEA are new
DS room all new but he paid
Guest room new bed frame and mattress both IKEA
Definitely a theme here!
Clothes/shoes I buy a mixture of second hand, outlet and high st sales plus TKMaxx
Jewellery always second hand
Recently splashed out on a new iPad but previous ones have always been secondhand
Kitchen appliances all new
Other things eg TVs always secondhand
It’s a mixture of reasons, some financial but also more eco friendly, some older stuff is better quality or classic (I love my retro G plan) sometimes just plain hard to find what I want new
Tell me about yours

We always buy kids bikes second hand and I often buy things like coats for them second hand but more expensive brands as I think it's better value. Books etc and also some household gadgets like our fridge at our last house were second hand.Furniture wise most of our stuff is new to us other than some things we inherited like a bookcase etc. One of our kids has a reconditioned ercol dressing table that was my grandma's. I'm happy to buy second hand, just often can't find what I'm looking for!

Elphame · 28/12/2020 22:54

Most of my furniture is inherited or from auction houses. The only major piece I bought new was the sofa and a matching armchair. They were made to measure and are coming up to 30 years old now themselves. They do need recovering now but that's a recent development. They were seriously expensive but overall very cheap indeed.

Clothes are generally new as are electricals but odds and ends like candles, vases etc etc I buy from charity shops

jillypill · 28/12/2020 22:55

I buy lots of 2nd hand furniture because I often prefer the style. Lots of 2nd hand books, some toys. Sometime clothes because I want a certain thing.

umpteennamechanges · 28/12/2020 22:55

A lot.

I'd say 80% of my clothes, maybe even 90% are good brands bought on eBay.

Home decor wise my style is a mix of antique/vintage and modern. I'd say 50/50.

Overfullwardrobe · 28/12/2020 22:56

Looking round our house, we buy new electrical stuff, but all furniture is second hand (apart from mattresses). My clothes are about 50/50 second hand. Kids in a mix of new, and hand me downs.
I always check for second hand stuff for sale before buying anything new.

chickychicchic · 28/12/2020 22:57

I buy a lot 2nd hand especially furniture as I would rather solid wood.
Clothes I also have a mixture probably 75% secondhand. Most new stuff gifts from DH

I love a bargain and up cycling etc

LadyLazaruss · 28/12/2020 22:58

Loads. At least 70% of my clothes and furniture.

FangsForTheMemory · 28/12/2020 22:59

Furniture, most of the time. It’s dead cheap and better quality than I can afford to buy new. Books sometimes.

SharonasCorona · 28/12/2020 23:00

I try to buy second hand but it’s hard. We needed some dining chairs and I scoured Facebook marketplace, eBay, BHF shops etc but I couldn’t find anything and some were just too stained. Ended up getting them on Amazon Marketplace for £35 a pair.

PandaBabyJuly · 28/12/2020 23:00
  • My sofa, tv, dining table and chairs, fireplace, side tables, curtains, daughters cabin bed, her chest of drawers & wardrobe.
  • The IKEA storage units and the shoe storage console

Mattresses are always new, same with kitchen appliances, usually electronics too - apart from the lounge tv as my friend wanted a smaller one so we swapped

Titsywoo · 28/12/2020 23:00

Lots of stuff - furniture (nothing fabric though), clothes, books, kitchen equipment, cars

alltheadrenalin · 28/12/2020 23:03

I buy plenty of second hand! I love the old school g plan stuff, have some IKEA pieces I bought for next to nothing from fb buy and sell. 1 year old Leather dfs sofa I bought for £10 off eBay, seems crazy to me but the seller was updating their living room so got rid of what's a practically new sofa in my eyes. Pretty much all my clothes bar undies are second hand. I love cashmere, quality fabrics and brands outside my price range, second enables me to access this kind of stuff. All the clothes I own I absolutely treasure.
My son lives in second hand clothes and has a room full of second hand toys. Footwear however, he has my dodgy feet so he has to have good quality which I only buy brand new for him. I often shop on offices eBay store where they flog ex display stock for my footwear.

gaggiagirl · 28/12/2020 23:03

Most furniture
Most of my clothing
Some shoes and clothing for the DC and DH
Small appliances
Exercise equipment
Hoover
TVs

JaceLancs · 28/12/2020 23:05

Glad to hear it’s not just me!
Most of my friends and acquaintances buy everything new and think I’m quite odd

I buy a lot 2nd hand especially furniture as I would rather solid wood.

So do we. When you can buy an interesting quality piece made by a skilled carpenter from solid oak or pine - that's been around for decades and will probably outlast you - for the same price as (or less than) some veneered chipboard from Argos that you have to assemble yourself, I really don't see why you wouldn't.

I think the same about cars. You read so many articles about how to strike the best possible deal you can and what optional extras you can forego to save a few hundred quid. Wait five (or even just two or three) years and choose carefully and you'll get the same car, 90% as good as when it was new (with most of the 10% being only cosmetic damage), for 25% (or less) of the original price.

AnnaSW1 · 28/12/2020 23:08

Nothing

Twillow · 28/12/2020 23:08

Most of it due to having to start again after leaving nasty ex.
I actually enjoy it now, new is the last choice for me!

Shorthairlady · 28/12/2020 23:09

Nothing. Due to growing up in a house where everything was someone else's discarded, mismatched, broken rubbish. There's secondhand and there's discarded shit. Our house was filled with the latter unfortunately.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 28/12/2020 23:12

Looking round my living room the only things we have bought from new are two display cabinets and a tv. Everything else is inherited or bought from charity shops. In our dining room all the furniture was passed on to us. Elsewhere in the house the wardrobes are all second hand, as are the beds. The mattresses were bought new though.

I buy a lot of second hand clothes.

BruiseForsyth · 28/12/2020 23:12

I buy nearly all of my clothes secondhand. I’m trying to buy better quality items, but I can’t really afford to pay full price. I’ve picked up some amazing bargains.

I buy some children’s toys secondhand - usually the annoying plastic noisy stuff that they go mad for but don’t really play with. There’s always somebody looking to offload that kind of thing. They haven’t noticed yet.

Most of my furniture is new, mainly because what we wanted hasn’t turned up secondhand when we needed it. We moved recently and I have been keeping an eye out but haven’t found anything to my taste and budget yet.

nevergoingoutagain · 28/12/2020 23:13

Living room
Side board, storage unit, table, armchair, 7 musical instruments
Lounge
Bookcase and coffee table
Bedroom
desk, chair, bedside tables, bathroom cabinet, bedside lights
Kids rooms
2 Desks, one chest of drawers, dolls cot, some of dd(7) other toys and her bed (not mattress)
A fair few clothes for all kids and me.
Cars and motorbike
Lots of retro crap that I love including loads of Xmas decs!
Artificial Xmas tree
Some pics on walls and some just the frames.
Step ladder for loft
And probably loads more! I always look second hand first!

NotMeNoNo · 28/12/2020 23:13

Loads. Seems to me as soon as you've owned something new for 5 minutes, it becomes used, so you've lost nothing. Certainly anything that can be cleaned or washed is fair game.
The main exception is technology as a lot of items are so rubbish now you need the guarantee.

Plonque · 28/12/2020 23:15

Pretty much everything.
Whatever I need to buy, I'll look for it second hand first. Obviously not underwear or a few other choice items.
Clothes, shoes, furniture, accessories, electricals - definitely.

StoneofDestiny · 28/12/2020 23:16

Nothing apart from books

Seafog · 28/12/2020 23:17

I try and buy as much as I can second hand, minus mattresses, under clothes, socks, and towels.
I hate waste, love good quality solid build wood furniture, old dishes and mirrors. I love finding the perfect brass plant pot at a flea market, or a wicker chair, etc
