Inspired by another thread about how often people change furniture/soft furnishing/electrical items and then sell on - I looked round my house.....
In dining room everything is second hand, in lounge only thing bought new is a shelving unit from IKEA
In my bedroom only the mattress and a chest of drawers from IKEA are new
DS room all new but he paid
Guest room new bed frame and mattress both IKEA
Definitely a theme here!
Clothes/shoes I buy a mixture of second hand, outlet and high st sales plus TKMaxx
Jewellery always second hand
Recently splashed out on a new iPad but previous ones have always been secondhand
Kitchen appliances all new
Other things eg TVs always secondhand
It’s a mixture of reasons, some financial but also more eco friendly, some older stuff is better quality or classic (I love my retro G plan) sometimes just plain hard to find what I want new
Tell me about yours

A fair amount of my books that I don't get from the library
Pretty much all my work wear- there's obviously a lady who lives in my area who is my size and donates loads of excellent Boden/monsoon stuff which is great
Most of my little boys DVDs
I'm slightly alternative in my real life so I find it hard to find clothes I like second hand except on depop occasionally

Pugdogmom · 29/12/2020 18:35

Bits and pieces. In my sitting room I have upcycled some vintagy standard lamps and bought new shades. My spare bedroom furniture was my mums ( really good quality wood and is actually modern looking, and has been in every bedroom in my house at some point). Books, also clothes but I buy designer or High End high street stuff, also bags from Ebay or Charity shops, that I wouldn't pay full price for.
I wouldn't buy 2nd hand sofas ,beds or electronics 2nd hand. Obviously used cars.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 29/12/2020 18:35

Oo I love a second hand bargain! Clothes (not underwear), shoes, furniture, toys. I've been really lucky with ebay finds, good quality well looked after woollens I couldn't afford brand new. But I check seller history, don't buy anything with no description of condition. Personally feel it's a win:win situation, someone else gets money for their stuff, you get something you like at a good price and only minimal environmental impact - delivery.

Let's face it, no one is going to turn their nose up at a Picasso painting because someone else owned it before you Wink

Stuff I tend to buy secondhand:
My clothing
Furniture
Some appliances - hoover's, TV's etc.
Some cookwares
Cars
Ornaments

Things that I buy new:
Menswear
Some kids stuff
Underwear!
Crockery
Shoes
Rugs
Some toys if they are presents and fairly cheap, secondhand if expensive.
Mattresses and bedding

I'd say about 50/50. Would love to just go to a furniture store and buy lots of stuff new, but can't afford this and unwilling to get into debt for it.

We're at a stage of life where our children have grown up and we are likely to live here for a very long time so have been refurbishing. We have had new soft furnishings and electrical goods, carpets etc but we have always bought a lot second hand too. Our wooden furniture, apart from our dining table and chairs, is all second hand; much of it from charity shops. We paid probably 1/20th what would be paid for similar quality (if you could get it) new. My husband loves aeroplanes, specifically anything to do with Concorde. His presents this year were all concerning this and all from Ebay. I have bought a lot of clothes from Ebay. I can get the makes l like at a fraction of the price but am careful of the description of the condition. A previous poster said it was difficult buying clothes second hand in larger sizes but l don't think it is if you look carefully. M and S, for example, seem to be very well represented in all sizes on Ebay. A lot of my books are second hand and from charity shops. I have always liked charity shops - you never know what you will find there. Needless to say I also donate a lot to charity shops. It is symbiotic and the perf form of recycling.

95% of our house is second hand
My dad is the king of eco warrior-ness and its rubbed off
I’ll buy something from a charity shop/eBay and once I’m done back to the charity shop it goes
We’ve kitted our whole house out for what it would have cost just to do one room if we’d bought it all new
Plus you can buy quirky bits you don’t find new
We did spend on an Emma mattress tho-sleep is important
I love a good rummage round a charity shop

lollipoprainbow · 29/12/2020 19:14

Most of the stuff in my home is second hand ! My mum was a big second hand fan and I think I've inherited it from her. Facebook marketplace is a godsend I have got really nice bits from there over the years.

treeeeemendous · 29/12/2020 22:16

Underwear, shoes, mattresses, towels, bed sheets always new.

Most other things are half and half. I like eBay, Facebook sales, charity shops

Aneley · 30/12/2020 00:07

Only books, clothes and occasionally some smaller furniture/decorative pieces. Wouldn't buy secondhand underwear, towels or bed sheets though.

shamus2020 · 30/12/2020 00:15

I used to buy a lot second hand, mostly furniture and clothes. Until a couple of years ago when I bought a bedside table and a few weeks later started getting bitten a lot in bed. It was only infested with bed bugs!! 14 months of hell and a lot of money spent later and we've finally gotten rid of them. It's made me super anxious now and I'm petrified about getting them again so I buy everything new. I see lots of nice stuff on the fb selling pages but I won't buy any of it because those 14 months was absolute torture! It's the reason I'm on anti depressants now and can't get off them even though the problems gone.

Dita73 · 30/12/2020 00:19

These days nothing but for years and years all our furniture, appliances, everything were all things people were going to get rid of. We were young and starting out together and it didn’t matter. It still wouldn’t but it is nice to be able to buy something we’ve actually chosen

shamus2020 · 30/12/2020 00:21

I once lived next door to a lady about 10 years ago and she had bed bugs. Instead of throwing away her infested bedroom furniture she put an ad in the shop window advertising it for free because she didn't drive and couldn't get it to the tip and people were coming and picking it up unbeknownst to the fact it was from an infested house. Thats why I'll never have another thing second hand in the house you don't know what they are living with.

PickAChew · 30/12/2020 00:25

We have some second hand furniture - 2 sets of dining tables and chairs, both oak. Also a big sideboard - vintage M&S. I love the style and the size of the cupboards and drawers but it's got quite a bright cherry stain (typical of the 90s) ad doesn't really fit in the room which is full of antique stained pine and plank furniture.

DS1 destroyed an IKEA sofa, sitting on it lengthways, so we replaced it with a second hand stressless recliner and footstool set.

Some of DS2's clothes are old ones of DS1's. We donated anything in decent condition that wasn't really suitable for him. DH also wears some of DS1's outgrown t-shirts as pyjamas :o

PickAChew · 30/12/2020 00:27

DH has an old ercol desk and a pine chest of drawers that he un--tweed in his office.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 30/12/2020 00:38

Ds is an avid reader so I every time I buy him books I try to get them 2nd hand.

All of our cutlery and many of our pans were given to me by various relatives when I first moved into a place of my own.

My dcs' clothes are often hand-me-downs (decent quality though) from relatives with older children. We would continue to pass them on if they're not torn etc but ours are the youngest so I give them to charity shops.

Our big Christmas tree is 2nd hand: a woman that worked with dh gave it to us several years ago.

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 00:49

Because we prefer antique furniture it's all second hand, I think - apart from a coffee table! I love that there is a history attached to things.

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 00:52

Oh yes ditto children's bikes. We have yet to buy a new one, preferring to get a really good make in great condition instead. We'll save the brand new bike for next spring when my eldest will be 13 as he's bumping his head on the ceiling already and is in size 11 shoes so probably doesn't have too much more growing to do!

Sarahandduck18 · 30/12/2020 01:03

My house and car!
Cat
Some kids clothes
Some kids toys
Kids bikes
Most books
In the past all furniture but now mostly ikea.

Nowaynothappening · 30/12/2020 01:14

Most things really. Most of our furniture is second hand and lots of our electrical items are. Majority were practically brand new condition and half the price if not less.

safariboot · 30/12/2020 01:23

When I was a child most of our furniture is second hand. Now it's more of a mix. Our sofa cost a tenner from the BHF Furniture shop, bargain! I'd never buy a second hand mattress though, that just seems minging.

Electrical goods usually bought new, but not generally replaced when they're not broken. Same for dishes. CDs, DVDs, games often second hand but books usually new.

My car is a hand-me-down from family.

safariboot · 30/12/2020 01:26

PS: Second hand stuff for us has always been bought from a dealer. Very rarely buy from ebay/gumtree/etc. It's not a guarantee, but regarding bedbugs and other pests it gives a chance for them to be detected rather than furniture going straight from infested home to my home.

Anoisagusaris · 30/12/2020 01:31

Nothing really. Except books occasionally. And hand me downs from family.

Our furniture was mostly bought 14 years ago when we built our house and we haven’t replaced it.

Our baby items did 3 kids at least. Cot was a hand me down, so that saw 5 kids in total. We passed on other items.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/12/2020 01:32

When we moved in we had DHs second hand sofa. Replaced with new when it broke but it was god DN AWFUL and got replaced with a lovely leather one from a charity shop.

Bookcases are new but sideboards aren't. Wardrobes are new but cupboards aren't.

Books mixture of second hand (fictions) and new (nom fiction)'t but CDs and DVDs

Older ones clothes mostly new, baby twins mostly second hand.

Toys mostly second hand if bright now as he likes large plastic toys. Babies are on his hand me downs.

Electrical items new

My clothes a mix but shoes new
