Inspired by another thread about how often people change furniture/soft furnishing/electrical items and then sell on - I looked round my house.....
In dining room everything is second hand, in lounge only thing bought new is a shelving unit from IKEA
In my bedroom only the mattress and a chest of drawers from IKEA are new
DS room all new but he paid
Guest room new bed frame and mattress both IKEA
Definitely a theme here!
Clothes/shoes I buy a mixture of second hand, outlet and high st sales plus TKMaxx
Jewellery always second hand
Recently splashed out on a new iPad but previous ones have always been secondhand
Kitchen appliances all new
Other things eg TVs always secondhand
It’s a mixture of reasons, some financial but also more eco friendly, some older stuff is better quality or classic (I love my retro G plan) sometimes just plain hard to find what I want new
Tell me about yours

My car, I never buy a new car. Other than that, nothing, but I'm not really a shopper, so buy very little of anything.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 28/12/2020 23:19

All electrical items are new.

I buy some second hand kids clothes. I’d buy more second hand for me but I’m a funny size and you mostly can’t return (easily).

I like older style furniture and am happy to scour eBay or marketplace for what I’m looking for but I often don’t find it or it needs too much work.

YonderTweek · 28/12/2020 23:21

Pretty much all of my clothes are second hand. I love charity shops and have a good eBay session a couple of times a year. Grin We get a lot of bits and bobs from eBay and I used to get baby things etc from my local FB group too. At the moment we're buying lots of toys and activities for our son on eBay, and most of his Christmas presents were eBay haul too because we found some really cool things for not very much money. Smile I am quite thrifty and also genuinely like getting second hand stuff, so I'm happy if I find nice second hand furniture/exercise equipment/appliances/anything really, especially if they are gifted to us.

marriednotdead · 28/12/2020 23:21

My bed and bedroom furniture were new although the mirrored wardrobe doors were from Freecycle.
Kitchen white goods were new, lots of other bits like pans are hand me downs. All lounge and dining room furniture secondhand/Freecycled except mantel mirror which was a gift.
Curtains bought in sales.
75% of my wardrobe from charity shops, DP does the same.
I’ve never earned loads and have done this forever!

SandyY2K · 28/12/2020 23:23

Nothing, except for my car.

Tellmelies65 · 28/12/2020 23:27

Books mostly though I did recently buy a chest of drawers in good condition second hand.

Givemeabreak88 · 28/12/2020 23:29

Nothing

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/12/2020 23:31

I use abe books quite a lot if I hear about something I'd like to read that's not a current title. abebooks.co.uk
Recently picked up some amazing things on freecycle; PC monitor, Book case, coat stand, saving around £450
Office chair from eBay in the summer, retail around £350, I paid about £30.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 28/12/2020 23:33

A fair amount.
My clothes - about half are second hand, but definitely not underwear!
Furniture - about 2/3 I reckon. Some stuff from family, some from the second hand /antique furniture shop or ebay.
electricals - all new /refurbished.

bathorshower · 28/12/2020 23:34

Much of our furniture is second hand. Our car certainly is, as are the bikes DD has/had.

Clothes and shoes not so much - we all typically wear stuff until it falls apart, even with DD there's not much in good enough condition to pass on, especially not shoes

About 5 years ago almost all our kitchen equipment was second hand. However it has steadily failed (even the Kenwood Chef) so we've replaced it with new, expecting to use it until it fails.

StatisticallyChallenged · 28/12/2020 23:42

Most of our furniture is new now apart from a couple of vintage bits that were chosen because I love them (Ercol coffee table, rocking chair, and a lovely painted bureau/secretaire/unit). We've not long moved house and second hand shopping wasn't easy due to covid which was probably a factor. I'm also quite picky and knowing that I wanted (for example) a pair of purple sofas pretty much rules out second hand.

Nothing against buying second hand though, most of my handbag collection is second hand as is most of my nice jewellery - auctions/ebay/pawn shops. Happily buy second hand toys for the kids and good condition second hand clothes - not so often for me but only due to being an awkward size! I also sew a lot so buy fabric on ebay, often vintage, as well as other craft stuff.

Basically nothing against good second hand but for various reasons it's often not terribly practical at the moment

Maverick66 · 28/12/2020 23:43

Baby stuff
Travelcot
Baby Walker
Toys
Stroller
House
Furniture /curtains

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/12/2020 23:43

I buy quite a lot of clothes on depop, but that’s pretty much it. I used to get all second hand books, but now read on Kindle. Our best second hand thing is our cat!

Thefeep · 28/12/2020 23:45

Occasional clothes from eBay. Apart from that nothing is second hand in the house,

Porridgeoat · 28/12/2020 23:46

Anything electric is new. Also beds and mattresses. And also pants bras. Everything else is second hand.

Ingleduh · 28/12/2020 23:47

All furniture except console unit and sofa is second hand but 2 sets before that were charity shop purchases. I like real wood so have picked up bits over the years when I've spotted them.
Clothes is mix, a fair chunk are bought second hand or are handed down from friends/cousins. Some bits are new for convenience if I can't find secondhand when needed, or new but gifted for birthdays/Christmas. We pass clothes to family when outgrown too.
All electrical are new.
Toys/books are mixed, bikes/scooters/garden toys have been secondhand, tend to get alot of books from charity shops but generally indoor toys are Xmas/birthday gifts so mostly new.

NameChange84 · 28/12/2020 23:48

Only books really.

I donate a lot of stuff to charity though. I can’t relax wearing/using second hand stuff but I think this is related to anxiety for me.
I even refuse to sit on sofas or chairs in holiday accommodation Blush.

Mumof2bears · 28/12/2020 23:48

We vary - my clothes are bought in the sale, from Tesco/Primark, or are secondhand. Same with DDs' (they've received some clothes as presents too). DH won't wear second hand (he'd say that you don't know who has worn it before him, as if I wouldn't wash it first!) so anything I buy him is bought in M&S sales or from eBay as long as they're brand new with tags! Furniture has been given to us or bought new, but nothing fancy. With the exception of our car, which was an 'almost new' purchase, we wouldn't buy electrical goods second-hand in case they have hidden faults.

Floralnomad · 28/12/2020 23:49

I have bought a used car a couple of times and that’s it .

Sittinginmyoodie · 29/12/2020 00:00

I'm another one who only has a second hand car. Everything else is bought new. I do keep DS1 clothes for DS2, but not uniform and not shoes, mainly because they're worn out.

As someone who grew up with three siblings, I spent most of my youth in someone else's clothes and having to 'make do'. Now I have my own money, I buy the things I like and want.

I do get a lot of my furniture from Ikea. My parents have stuff from there (including a lack table that cost £5 when they bought it!) that is over 30 years old, so I don't think it's too shoddy.

SpaceRaiders · 29/12/2020 00:00

My house is a mixture of contemporary designer, mid century style furniture, the majority of it is ex show home, high end stuff, which I would never otherwise bring myself to buy it new. I’ve just moved house and I managed to get matching, nearly new, handmade pinch pleat curtains for 3 rooms for an absolute steal off eBay.

I buy all kids tech second hand. Clothes I do usually buy new for dd1, dd2 gets mostly hand-me-downs and they keep their value once shes outgrown them. Shoes, underwear etc are always new. Electricals I buy new, I’d rather have the security of a guarantee if I need it. Very little is thrown away, everything is sold on eBay once we’re done with it.

onitlikeacarbonnet · 29/12/2020 00:04

In my living room I have a few things that were bought new but over 10 years old. Practically everything is secondhand or bought in sales/cheap shops for peanuts including my 2 sofas which cost £150 from gumtree.
Mine and the kids beds/mattresses were new but cheap from IKEA or Argos (so I could pay it up).
The kids clothes are a mix of hand me downs and primark/George. I’ll spend more on winter coats, also school shoes and trainers once a year. I have a friend who’s ds is the same age as mine but bigger so she gives me a bag of clothes and shoes a couple of times a year. Dd is mostly new but I pick up tons of very cheap things in sales.
I mostly buy from primark/supermarket sale rails for myself. Before covid I’d often mooch round charity shops and buy books for dc and myself as well as clothes and household things.
I had to start from scratch after my ex left us in the shit, but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. I own my own home (mortgaged till I’m 65 mins) and have a decent car.
When I was with their dad we were very comfortably off; large house, 2 cars, couple of holidays a year. Now I rely on tax credits to top up my wage. But I am very frugal with the things that don’t matter and I enjoy feeling like I’ve got a bargain.
I buy lots of reduced food too and we eat well on it
Because of this, I have the means to buy the dcs good leather shoes and decent coats, can take us on holiday, and have enough put by to see us ok if the washing machine dies or the 15 year old telly explodes.

1Morewineplease · 29/12/2020 00:09

I love going to auctions. There's so much to buy, particularly from house clearances.
I bought a mahogany bureau for £17
Local auctions are amazing. You might need to go a few times but they're great to go to.
I've bought much stuff , second hand, for my children and my house.
So much nicer and it's recycling too!

Twobrews · 29/12/2020 00:15

Very little. I have had the worst luck with buying used goods online.
Have had faulty prams sold 'as new', clothing with unlisted rips/stains/shrunk in the wash, fake items, baby items that reek of cigarette smoke even after multiple washing and leaving outside.
So I've given up trying unless I can see before I buy, though it's rare I want anything as the local charity shops are full of primark and tat.

DD however buys and sells loads on depop, probably 60% of her clothes are used.

BackforGood · 29/12/2020 00:29

Lots of stuff, from clothes to furniture.
Or often on freecycle or similar, or things passed on by friends, so free.
I started when we were really poor, and now I just can't bring myself to pay 20x the price for something that is the same item.
