Inspired by another thread about how often people change furniture/soft furnishing/electrical items and then sell on - I looked round my house.....
In dining room everything is second hand, in lounge only thing bought new is a shelving unit from IKEA
In my bedroom only the mattress and a chest of drawers from IKEA are new
DS room all new but he paid
Guest room new bed frame and mattress both IKEA
Definitely a theme here!
Clothes/shoes I buy a mixture of second hand, outlet and high st sales plus TKMaxx
Jewellery always second hand
Recently splashed out on a new iPad but previous ones have always been secondhand
Kitchen appliances all new
Other things eg TVs always secondhand
It’s a mixture of reasons, some financial but also more eco friendly, some older stuff is better quality or classic (I love my retro G plan) sometimes just plain hard to find what I want new
Tell me about yours

I enjoy finding things via car boot sales, auctions, charity shops, fairs, & a small amount online. I have found some unusual bargains & useful items

I've always been interested in the reuse, recycle, circle of life

However, I am aware that some people may not have the resources or choice to always buy new

Christmas outfit was from a charity shop

Dining table inherited
Plates from car boot sale
Gravy boat inherited (good to think about the meals & people that it had celebrated in its previous life)

Christmas presents some new & some second hand

Angliski · 29/12/2020 12:50

Loads of stuff.
Agree with PP on furniture and cars and nice clothes.

I do buy little one new things now and then ( ooops John Lewis sale rabbit hole) and buy undies new. Also electricals.

I love reclaiming beautiful things. We’ve bought 50sqm of real parquet and fitted it ourselves as well as a mahogany bannister to replace our staircase - for £200! Result.

Handy husband helps.

In front room fireplace Gp Lam sideboard and coffee table and two arm chairs are all reclaimed. Antique light fittings and bookcase also. But there is a loaf sofa bought new some years ago

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 29/12/2020 12:57

Very little other than furniture because I other the style and it's well made, and cars. I tend to buy less but buy well and sell on with clothes, toys etc. I wouldn't buy second hand electricals you have no idea if they are already on the blink

damnthemanatee · 29/12/2020 13:27

Dining table, chairs and Welsh dresser were all junk shop/gumtree buys and painted. Ditto bedside tables and drawers in mine and spare room.

Beds and mattresses all new but bed frame second hand.

Sofa and chairs new, coffee table second hand.

I don't buy much else second hand, the odd clothing item from eBay. Never shoes.

Calmandmeasured1 · 29/12/2020 13:28

Everything in my house is either bought new or belonged to my deceased parents.

I'm happy to buy 2nd hand from charity shops but most of my favourite clothes are bought new.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 29/12/2020 13:29

Most of my clothes are second hand from eBay Smile

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/12/2020 13:31

I wouldn't buy electronics second hand. But it's not like I buy much! We've had 1 TV for 10 years.

I buy furniture second hand but our not sofa or bed.

I'm a size 20/22 so I find shopping for second hand clothes really hard as there's rarely much in my size around.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/12/2020 13:33

Honestly very little.

I do have second hand things of course but generally that I've been given rather than buying - baby equipment and toys, baby/childrens clothes.

I've tried to buy more clothes second hand and given up, I don't have the time to find things I actually like in nice condition at a price I think is reasonable (I would expect to pay max of 40% of the new price if buying second hand).

I'm time poor and have been disappointed with the condition of childrens clothes in particular described as "excellent".

I don't enjoy rummaging through charity shops or clothes shopping generally, so it's not that I would choose to spend a lot of time on it.

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/12/2020 13:35

Oh yeah my car too!

It is important to recognise the time which goes into finding goods second hand isn't something everyone has. Also people can choose other ways to reduce environmental impact, such a buying less, using public transport or not having children.

squeekums · 29/12/2020 13:36

Very little these days

ShopTattsyrup · 29/12/2020 14:42

In our downstairs basically everything is second hand one way or another apart from the TV. Either FB market place, charity shop, given by a friend who was redecorating and didn't need anymore, Ebay etc. The Sofa is new and was a birthday present from multiple family members. The white goods were new and included in my previous flat, my landlord was going to chuck them and replace with new for the next tennant so I asked if I could have them!

Upstairs is the same situation apart from the beds and mattresses which were new.

CounsellorTroi · 29/12/2020 14:53

Books nearly always second hand.
Few items of furniture from Heart Foundation shop. Couple inherited.
Cars always used.

BertieBotts · 29/12/2020 14:58

Kids' clothes, toys, books.

I used to buy my books second hand but use kindle now so I can't :( I miss it.

Jigsaws

Occasionally furniture/house stuff.

I think that's about it? I don't have good adult second hand clothing shops near me and I like to try things on.

JaceLancs · 29/12/2020 15:18

Totally agree about the time it takes - but I view it as a leisure activity!
I love a good window shop, trawl round charity shops and antique centres - don’t always find anything but still enjoy it
Browse online in the evenings whilst watching tv

Nearly all furniture is second hand here. We have a bedroom set we bought new but I now regret it! The disadvantage is nothing matches but we buy and renovate so it doesn't matter too much as we constantly live in a pigsty...

corythatwas · 29/12/2020 16:23

Do inherited items count?

I come from a family where very little was thrown away and then moved into a house where the sellers had left a lot of furniture and household equipment. I haven't spent any time one this, I've just said "yes, please" when people have asked "does anyone want this old cast-iron frying-pan" or whatever. Often it's laziness as much as anything else: if something works I will not get a replacement just for the sake of it.

Proudboomer · 29/12/2020 16:42

Main items
Kitchen new
Dining room inherited table and chairs
Wall unit was new but I bough it over 20 years ago
Drinks cabinet secondhand
Lounge new sofa and rugs
Corner unit new bought with the dining room unit
Tv cabinet, nest of tables and small cabinet all inherited
.my bedroom bed frame was new about 20 years ago. I have replaced the mattress twice with new.
Bedroom chair inherited and the rest of the furniture is fitted and came with the house.
Spare room has old bed from adult child’s room, inherited drawers and ottoman.
Other rooms occupied by adult children so their furniture is their responsibility.
Smaller items like diner service, cutlery, glassware, duvets and towels are a mix of bought over the last 30 years and inherited.
Clothes mostly new
Shoes always new as I only wear orthopaedics.
When I buy new I buy the best I can afford and to last. Or if I was gifted a good quality item I use it until it is on its last legs hence my bathroom towels don’t match but still have plenty of wear in them so I won’t replace them.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 29/12/2020 16:49

Most of my moveable furniture is second hand. New kitchen and bathroom.

Second hand car.

Clothes are all new. I want to get into shopping second hand but was dragged around charity shops as a child and I was so embarrassed. My children love a charity shop though.

MagnoliaXYZ · 29/12/2020 17:46

My cars have always been second-hand. Everything else I buy new.

Johan23 · 29/12/2020 17:59

Some clothes. A lot of DS clothes are hand me downs: he had so much for the age he is now that we’ve just bought joggers, pants and socks in this size. Some toys. Nest of tables, tumble dryer, 2 wardrobes, dining table and 6 chairs, 3 chests of drawers

Johan23 · 29/12/2020 18:00

And a 2nd hand car

Thehop · 29/12/2020 18:01

Mainly second hand everything here, topped up with sale items a year before I need them. So I have next years Christmas jumpers/clothes bought from sales this week for example.

We are in our 40s and got our first brand new sofas last year, that was exciting!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/12/2020 18:02

All my clothes except shoes. I buy a lot of vintage clothing on Asos marketplace. I always buy furniture new though.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 29/12/2020 18:08

Almost everything unless I need something specific fairly urgently and can’t find one second hand

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/12/2020 18:13

Some furniture because I love upcycling.
Electrical equipment always new. Some clothes around 15% because they are goth or vintage.
