Sick of going for walks

225 replies

User158340 · 28/12/2020 09:04

Anyone else having to really drag themselves to go out at the moment?

I actually love going for a walk, but after 9 months of the same local walks i'm sick to death of them. The freezing cold weather obviously compounds it and the rain etc.

Yesterday I actually didn't leave the house at all and ended up awake half the night. Now I have to motivate myself to go for a longish walk today in 'feels like' minus temperatures.

Both DH and I love going out walking and exploring places but to get that bit further afield we usually catch a bus or train to get somewhere else and do a loop but we can't do that at the moment. The cold, wind, rain and mud isn't the problem its not being able to go much further than 3 or 4 miles radius from the house.

Timbucktime · 29/12/2020 12:52

I’m not so much bored of walks but utterly fed up of the looks from most of the people that I pass on the very quiet and empty pavement.
I walk single file past them and they aren’t even close yet you would think I’ve got a big black cross on me with the words ‘unclean’ written with the way they act.

I almost keeled over the over day when somebody smiled back to me.

Cottagepieandpeas · 29/12/2020 12:54

Yep, same. We also have an elderly dog so can’t go too far with him.

Oysterbabe · 29/12/2020 12:58

I've always found them pretty tedious. My inlaws are obsessed and can't go a few hours without them dragging me out on a walk like I'm a fucking dog. I remember being heavily pregnant and them dragging me up and down hills all day. I went into labour that evening 5 weeks early.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 29/12/2020 13:50

Same! Went on a nice long one yday to a lovely spot but I've been there so much this year and it was freezing I just wanted to get home and watch tv.

MrsDThomas · 29/12/2020 13:59

Do those of you who hate walking live in cities or towns? I cant imagine not liking being outside walking. I have so much choice and i can go for miles -many times not seeing a soul.

Ineke · 29/12/2020 17:55

I would suggest either joining 'Meet Up' or Ramblers. You are allowed to go out on a group walk in Tier Four if it is with a formal Covid safe group,such as these two. Ramblers walks are between 6-12 miles and have a pace but plenty of stops and breaks. 'Meet Up' walks are shorter and some are coastal if you like the sea.

winniestone37 · 29/12/2020 17:56

@Thunderpunt brilliant suggestion!!! I’m downloading app now

Dasher789 · 29/12/2020 18:15

Yes. I am exactly the same. Was up until 5am the other night, then I sleep until lunch time as my body clock is out of sync. At least come January I am back at work albeit from home. I don't no how people on furlough are coping. The emptiness of days when you can't go anywhere is so difficult and everything becomes a chore.

Thunderpunt · 29/12/2020 18:38

@ErrolTheDragon

I just took a look at that app - the footpaths don't show up at a scale useful for planning a decent length walk.Confused OS maps may be better; we've got MemoryMap which is excellent but pricy and takes quite a bit of space as it stores the maps. We walk quite a lot usually and DH gets bored with the same routes. Taking note of any wildlife and changes in plants helps a bit - there are buds and shoots emerging even now.
I plan my walks on the app using my iPad and then transfer them to the phone. (IOS Airdrop to the app) We've managed some 10km circular walks, not sure if you're walking further than that, but quite acheivable on the app for us
Thunderpunt · 29/12/2020 18:41

@FamilyOfAliens

There's nothing worse than spotting a footpath leading off somewhere but having no idea where you might end up

“Nothing worse”? Grin

Well......maybe somethings are worse...like getting home from a long wet walk and finding there's no hot water for a bath?
Thunderpunt · 29/12/2020 18:43

@Skipsurvey

footpath sounds good *@Thunderpunt*
It's not bad, you have to actually plan the walks yourself though, when I first got it I thought it would do it all for me !
caspersmagicaljourney · 29/12/2020 18:49

@anguauberwaldironfoundersson

Same. We've been in tier 3 since the dawn of time and I miss museums and play centres and all those other lovely indoor and heated things we took for granted before covid. What I would give for a coffee and a slice of cake and a batter with the other mums while the kids run riot in the play area!
I feel your pain - I've been in tier 3 for ages too. I've forgotten what it's like to have a meal outside of the house, or a coffee come to that. The weather is utterly miserable too, has been snowing on/off today, so going outside is not inviting😒
PurBal · 29/12/2020 18:58

I love walking. I don't get bored and we went about 12 miles this morning, there are so many routes and we start most walks from home (live in a city). We use the OS App to plan routes but the established long distance footpaths are so much busier than pre COVID. Lots of people seem to be walking more but we are walking less due to it being busy and not being able to stay overnight to do longer routes (eg 50 miles, 3 day 2 night backpacking hikes). I can't wait for Covid to go so we can enjoy our walks in peace. In a selfish way, if you don't want to walk, don't. Sorry if that sounds terrible. DH hasn't been enjoying running as much when the gyms have been closed. So many people who would usually be in the gym, he says lockdown was busier than January!

Runmybathforme · 29/12/2020 19:00

Oh, I do agree. I bloody hate the cold weather. Went for a walk yesterday and it was miserable. My face hurt from the cold, eyes were watering , horrible. Healthy walks can bugger off until spring.

Yogalola · 29/12/2020 19:11

Just say hello to everyone you see, no doubt you pass different people every day some will respond and have a little chat others will move on quick. Wrap up warm and set yourself little challenges. Walk the opposite way to normal, see if you can walk faster up that steep hill you struggle with. Yes it’s hard work walking but better than being cooped up indoors 24/7.

Facelikearustytractor · 29/12/2020 19:15

YANBU. I have kids and we've kept away from pubs and restaurants since March (even in low tier) so today went to a freezing beach and a cafe, but had both people who think COVID isn't real and people who think that everyone should lock themselves in their house for ten years being pillocks, and then the kids being a pain too. It would have been so much easier to go to a soft play (which I'm not normally that keen on) then for something to eat without one way systems and masks etc. We normally love walks, but it would have been nice to just go somewhere warm and hassle free.

This, it's like people think saying hello or smiling is going to allow covid into their mouths. It's so depressing!
Ddot · 29/12/2020 20:04

I put the bins out in my silver pants(trousers) and paul Smith belt today.
I may go for a walk tomorrow in my ball gown

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 29/12/2020 20:14

I have been fed up with it since October. I really need to get motivated to get more exercise. I'm also bored of my own company.

BrightBlueCast · 29/12/2020 20:23

I can recommend finding a local friend who a) isn’t usually around at Xmas (normally would be visiting family abroad) b) has never got round to walking round our local woods before c) needs to get away from husband and kids for a bit .... and voila - a new walking buddy. She’s been so enthusiastic and we’ve had chance for a good chat when normally we see each other in passing and never get chance to talk. It’s good to see our local surroundings through someone else’s eyes.

First world problems

smilingontheinside · 29/12/2020 21:04

Get a dog, you'll always have a reason to get out on a walk. I'd vegetate indoors all the time given a choice but do 3-4 walks a day with my dogs and feel so much better when I get back from a walk whatever the weather and the dogs are happy 🐶

VanGoghsDog · 29/12/2020 21:14

Get a dog is such a stupid response.

custardbear · 29/12/2020 21:23

Not RTFT but I'm really enjoying biking! Met some other bikers too who prefer just an amble (10-15 miles) rather than the crazy 50
Miles at 15
Mph types - explored the canal routes and riverside pathways, found all sorts of different places. I hate walking though
