Sick of going for walks

User158340 · 28/12/2020 09:04

Anyone else having to really drag themselves to go out at the moment?

I actually love going for a walk, but after 9 months of the same local walks i'm sick to death of them. The freezing cold weather obviously compounds it and the rain etc.

Yesterday I actually didn't leave the house at all and ended up awake half the night. Now I have to motivate myself to go for a longish walk today in 'feels like' minus temperatures.

I have to take a toddler with me which means spending hours trying to get him to walk 1m in the right direction rather than him just running home and then carrying him most of the way as paths are too muddy for a pram. Sick of it. Need soft play.

Being a dog Walker, daily walks are part of my day and I love them.

Yeah we tried the whole 'walk round the neighborhood to look at the Christmas lights' thing. 4yo was great, he loved it, but both attempts were absolutely ruined by having to carry a kicking, screaming, 2yo back to the car...

tappitytaptap · 28/12/2020 10:30

Yes definitely! Like you OP I used to love a walk, plenty of nice places around here to do so, nice for kids to get a run about etc. Now it’s same old, same old and I am heartily fed up of washing everything that’s covered in mud every single bloody time we step outside!!

MsTSwift · 28/12/2020 10:32

Given up with walks - muddy and miserable. Set up my turbo so exercise at home and can watch documentaries as I do so and we have a hot tub so get my blast of fresh air. So glad of both these things to avoid muddy tedium.

Caramel81 · 28/12/2020 10:34

I like walking on my own so I can listen to podcasts and music. I’ve had DP tagging along with most of my walks this year though due to him being furloughed and I’ve definitely not enjoyed it as much. I love his company and chat normally but when I’m walking I want to zone out and be alone.

MadameBlobby · 28/12/2020 10:35

YANBU

I don’t mind walking on my own as I can listen to audiobooks but my husband keeps wanting me to go out for walks and it’s so boring, he goes in a sulk if I say I don’t want to go as I’d rather go on my own.

AcornAutumn · 28/12/2020 10:36

I completely understand OP.

The cold has finished me off, I won't be bothering for a while. All my errands are done by walking as I don't drive.

I'm not a fan of audiobooks but can't really listen to music anyway as it's too rough round here to be walking without being aware of your surroundings.

My sister is convinced we are allowed to travel for exercise in Tier 4 but I am not seeing that in law at all.

I don't have any friends within walking distance so no chance of company either.

Benjispruce2 · 28/12/2020 10:37

You have to have the right footwear. I have walking boots and leave them outside so they’re like 4X4s and nowhere is out of bounds. With my dog I walk in different directions daily and am lucky to have a wild park around the corner away from roads. But while off work and at weekends I’ll drive to a country park or wood within 10 miles or so.
I do find a dog makes a walk purposeful.

GameSetMatch · 28/12/2020 10:37

Ugh, yes I’m dragging my three and six year olds out daily, it feels like punishment not an enjoyable experience I’m fed up with it all too, especially because I can’t see an end in sight with this new strain. Hang in there OP you’re not alone!

Caramel81 · 28/12/2020 10:38

If any of you want to exercise at home instead there are lots of “walking from home” workouts on YouTube which can be a good way to get your step count up without having to deal with the cold and rain.

Sunshinedrops85 · 28/12/2020 10:39

I love being outside, but I do also find it hard to drag myself out when I'm feeling low. I love the bigger park but it's much further away.

Now that's luxury.

Not to mention crowds of other people walking wherever you go. Can't wait til everything goes back to normal I can get some solitude again

I'm usually with DH at the moment so don't listen to anything, but if I'm out alone I sometimes have one earphone in so I can still hear what's going on.

rollinggreenhills · 28/12/2020 10:44

Yes, I'm completely bored with the local walks. The only ray of sunshine is that I'm now looking out for evidence of the coming spring, and on Boxing Day I noticed new primrose leaves pushing their way out of the ground. Way to go yet though, before we get any flowers.

annevonkleve · 28/12/2020 10:44

I can do lots of different walks from my front door so I don't need to travel for exercise, although I might do if I meet a friend (we've decided that we will travel to each other, so only one has to do any travelling at any one time, as we're about 5 miles apart).

But if you live somewhere without pavements or hills, or all the local walking areas are packed of course you can travel for exercise as long as you're not going 2 hours in the car to walk for 30 minutes (and even then I can't really see the covid risk, though it's a bit of a waste of fuel). The people who say "don't travel for exercise" clearly live in areas where there are plenty of places within a 5 minute walk of their front door.

Grapewrath · 28/12/2020 10:44

God me too
I live on the edge of a National park too so my local area is absolutely rammed at the minute. Especially are annoying are the large groups of adults who meet to chat and/or drink coffee in the middle of the path and let their children play together. It means there’s no distancing for the rest of us just trying to get our kids or dogs out. So annoying.
Or the cars parked everywhere blocking us in. I wish people would stay local or at least respect the area they visit

Not that muddy where you are then! Grin

If a tractor's passed through a field it churns the mud to knee deep. You'd need galoshes not walking boots! Grin

Walking boots are easily overtopped by the puddles on unfathomable mud.

tappitytaptap · 28/12/2020 10:45

@Clockstop who thought we’d ever miss soft play eh? Speaking here with a 2 year old. My 4 year old is generally ok at walking in the right direction - 2 year old not so much!!

Yes I went out for a run yesterday afternoon and it was far too busy with joined at the hip couples who refuse to go single file. And a big family group who completely blocked a pavement so a single guy had to cross a busy road.
FamilyOfAliens · 28/12/2020 10:52

There's nothing worse than spotting a footpath leading off somewhere but having no idea where you might end up

“Nothing worse”? Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 28/12/2020 10:53

We’re going to do some church micro geocaches later (taking a flask of milky coffee, brownies and a waterproof backed blanket for a park bench). Geocaching is fab fun.

Here they'll just get you from the other side!

It doesn't help with the weather anyway.

Anne I would be on public transport. Doesn't bother me but not sure how far it goes if stopped by a copper.
