Sick of going for walks

User158340 · 28/12/2020 09:04

Anyone else having to really drag themselves to go out at the moment?

I actually love going for a walk, but after 9 months of the same local walks i'm sick to death of them. The freezing cold weather obviously compounds it and the rain etc.

Yesterday I actually didn't leave the house at all and ended up awake half the night. Now I have to motivate myself to go for a longish walk today in 'feels like' minus temperatures.

OP posts:

Fed up with "nice walks" too. In fact, am still in bed and will probably remain here u til Jan 5th when I have the excitement of moving to the kitchen table to be back at work! Had enough.

andyoldlabour · 28/12/2020 11:49

I understand the OP. Back in March/April, the weather was great and the DW and I were going for a two hour walk every day. We didn't follow the same route and by November we had both lost around 8 kilos in weight, so that was good. Then my DW sprained her ankle badly and the rains came. The previously good routes were mud baths, so we could only do a 40 minute walk every day, which is the same route and really boring.
I am going to bring the turbo trainer indoors (haven't used it for years) because my knees have started to ache badly through lack of use.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2020 11:51

I use the viewranger app to plot my routes before I set off. My biggest difficulties at the moment are mud coming over the top of my boots and that all the local rivers are in flood, so I feel a bit hemmed in. I have very grippy trail shoes and quite grippy boots, but staying upright is testing my core strength.

I've found another new route to try though, so I'll do that in a day or two.

I've been mixing it up with some dawn walks and some night walks with a head torch. That's helped. At least dawn isn't at ridiculous o'clock at the moment.

@Thunderpunt

I know your probably not suppose to travel too far away from your home but if you're looking to explore a little further afield, there's a great app called Footpath. It shows on a map all public footpaths/byways... and can help explore new areas. There's nothing worse than spotting a footpath leading off somewhere but having no idea where you might end up - this will help you plan a route. Maybe give that a try? We used it in the summer as like you were bored with our regular walks, it opened up whole new areas for us.
Thanks for that. Sounds great.

Ds and I discovered mikes and miles of farmland out the back of us during lockdown 1. We knew of the walk along old railway line but actually had time to explore. We've done that now and want other places.

New app here we come!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/12/2020 12:00

You can use strava to log your walks. If you want it to count them all cumulatively on strava, record them as runs. You can also sign up to statshunter. This takes the feed from strava - recorded as walks, runs and rides and overlays all of your walks as a heat map. You can then see where you have been, collect 'badges' and tiles.

Yeah I hear you. This morning was the first time since March that I've felt pissed off. We've never really come out of some sort of lock down here, our pubs never opened, restaurants limited to bookings and staying for 90 mins, they only opened for a few weeks. Public places to visit never opened properly, shops only opened in December. So this morning I wrapped up, went to get milk and bread and the wind is so strong that my face hurts, the rain soaked through my rain gear, I was sweating under the rain gear but freezing at the same time, I'd to queue outside the shop for an hour and then there was no bread left ☹️ it's just feckin miserable.

Rollingpiglet · 28/12/2020 12:04

I feel your pain OP. I usually like going for walks and am lucky enough to live somewhere with some lovely places to walk but I am so bored of it now. It feels like the only form of entertainment we have. I will keep doing it as it is definitely good to get out of the house and get some exercise, but I can't wait until there is some other alternative!

Misshapencha0s · 28/12/2020 12:08

Not been out the house since Christmas eve...feel so unmotivated and lazy. Having a can't be arsed with any of this anymore day. Need to pull myself out of it. I miss going away for city breaks, visiting friends and family, even soft play!! I know I'm being self indulgent and many but it's just the way I feel tight now. Like life is passing by. The tedium is getting to me.

williowrosenburg · 28/12/2020 12:08

Think I'd be ok if I could go out alone or with just DH but I find walking with a 4 year old the most tiresome exercise...... you just never know if they will happily walk for a long time or get round the block and throw a paddy. Plus I end up carrying their scooter/bike/doll etc.... it just seems like more work then enjoyment!

MrsDThomas · 28/12/2020 12:15

I love going for walks! I ran yesterday morning, then a 5 mile walk with DH and as soon as i got in at 4, my friend texted me and said she was going so grabbed my headtorch and went for 3.5 miles.

Im off after lunch with my yaktraks in the snow.

I never get bored walking where I live, but i guess im lucky to have so much choice.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 28/12/2020 12:16

I hear you. Just been trawling through maps and suggestions of walks in our local authority. It’s so limited and places will be busy. The rules regarding travel make little sense to me, if people literally drive to an area go for a walk then drive home. Particularly when you live in a densely populated area, with very very limited country walks.

formerbabe · 28/12/2020 12:17

Bloody Fed up of it too. Although I'm not letting on to my dc. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't bother.

Echobelly · 28/12/2020 12:24

Yeah, it is depressing, especially when it's cold, muddy and you've done the same places 1000 times. We got a bit further afield on Boxing Day but with drizzle and mud it and not even that good scenery it was not that inspiring, though it was nice to get out.

EachandEveryone · 28/12/2020 12:26

Is there an app whic creates walking routes for you. Not one where ypu have to find a place to walk to and create it yourself? Im so fed up of walking through my local parks and ending up at Sainsburys.

Skade · 28/12/2020 12:27

@balzamico

Does anyone know how you can count the miles in a week/ year? I have a Fitbit but can't see it on there and I know this would really motivate Me.I walk the dog daily and love a walk but am getting tired of the mud
I've just sussed it out...if you log on to the Fitbit website on the laptop, once you're logged in go to your Dashboard, then Log - Activities. Change it to week, month or year and it will show you how far you've done - I'm on 909 miles which is slightly annoying because I wanted to be closer to 1000!

You're allowed to do that.
MeowPurrGrr · 28/12/2020 12:41

Why go out then? Why not put some good music on and dance around your house for an hour? I do this and it instantly boosts my mood and I get a bit of exercise.

bumblingbovine49 · 28/12/2020 12:44

I am getting quitebored of walks too but I don't understand those with dogs blaming covid, surely having to walk a dog 2-3 times a day every day will make you bored of walks regardless of Covid ( if that is your inclination and it is mine so no judgment) . One of the reasons I have never got dog isbecause I know what is now something I enjoy ( an almost daily walk but not every single day ) would be intoleravly dull and constraining if were forced into it every single day, multiple times because of a dog's needs.

DuckonaBike · 28/12/2020 12:49

I feel your pain - I love going for walks but could do all the local ones with my eyes shut by now. We currently have a lot of local flooding which has cut off access to most of them as well.

Cycling is a bit better as you can go further. I’ve also seen a lot of people swimming in the river recently but I just don’t want to do that! I miss the heated pool...

hellswelshy · 28/12/2020 12:55

Agree op. We have driven a few places for walks, social distanced, fresh air, good for mental health- no drama. People will go mad otherwise!

garlictwist · 28/12/2020 13:01

Yeah, me too. And everywhere is so muddy. All these people who discovered new places in their local area in lockdown really surprised me - how? There is literally nowhere new to go. However, I am 40 and grew up here so nothing is novel now.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 28/12/2020 14:43

For those struggling to get kids out or just anyone who fancies a change can I suggest you look to see if there is a permanent orienteering course near you? Print map take compass & go!

www.britishorienteering.org.uk/pocs

Doesn’t help with the endless mud or ice though Sad

ErrolTheDragon · 28/12/2020 16:11

For us, it wasn't that they were necessarily new, more that it was paths we wouldn't have bothered with before.

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/12/2020 16:16

I’m cycling rather than walking but it’s so bloody cold it’s a bit miserable. I was out today with 2 pairs of thermal socks and neoprene overshoes and still had painfully cold feet.

I’m looking forward to warmer weather for sure, it all seems so much better then.
