Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

If you say she's American, not Spanish, you're assuming her nationality/culture and should be punished for hate crime.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 09:16

Meowchickameowmeow do you see the parallels? If not, what is different?

queenofarles · 28/12/2020 09:16

I’m surprised it took this long for her story to come out, she went to school in Boston and many knew her, they say nice things about her, so it’s strange saying she grew up in Spain when she clearly was born in Boston , grew up in Boston and went to school there then onto NYU.

MrsRogerLima · 28/12/2020 09:17

@meowchickameowmeow @stealthpolarbear is taking the piss.

If you read some of the anti-trans threads on here (or as I see them, pro-woman) you will understand.

Jinglingmod · 28/12/2020 09:18

I have never heard of this woman until half an hour ago, but this thread has happily passed a non-Covid fretting thirty minutes. Bonkers! Grin

zzizz · 28/12/2020 09:18

Well yes, she says she's Spanish so she literally is. Anyone who says otherwise is a hateful evil bigot.

Seriously there is no difference at all between "I think I'm another sex so I am one" and "I think I'm another ethnicity so I am one".

(Except one of those ideas has a lot of rich powerful men funding it and the other doesn't of course.)

Songsofexperience · 28/12/2020 09:24

She shouldn't say she's actually Spanish, but if she's gone through the effort of learning the language so perfectly that she doesn't have a US accent when she speaks Spanish then I'd say she is pretty talented and dedicated. Have you met many people able to do that? Without actually spending their lives in the country? If you invest so much work into something you'd probably want to pass it on to your kids too. Perhaps one explanation for the lie could be that it was annoying her to have to explain why she speaks another language with her family- easier to just say she's Spanish (doesn't justify it though)

Really? ACTUAL violence? You obviously don't know the meaning of the words
Perhaps you've never heard the phrase taking the piss.[/quote]
Cheers crusty was actually getting a bit worried there that even this significant low level of piss takery had been taken seriously! Grin

Ileanna · 28/12/2020 09:26

If she says she is. She is.

Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!
justanotherneighinparadise · 28/12/2020 09:27

She’s obviously clever. She’s got a mother who’s a doctor and attended private school herself. She also bagged a millionaire and earns her own money through being an ‘influencer’.

Nanasplit · 28/12/2020 09:28

These trans analogies are such a good way of demonstrating how ridiculous the whole self-identifying fiasco is...

..although I'm surprised how many people have not picked up on the very obvious sarcasm!

TheBigMelt · 28/12/2020 09:28

Like others have said, if she ‘feels’ Spanish, why shouldn’t she be allowed to BE Spanish? We should all respect her Spanish identity and, in fact, why not scratch Boston as her place of birth off her birth certificate...and give her a ‘Spanish Woman of the Year’ award while we are at it?

Anything else would be bigoted hate speech, right?

Nanasplit · 28/12/2020 09:29

Especially people who didn't twig at the cat and OAP self-identifying posts!

SVRT19674 · 28/12/2020 09:29

@Bejjazzled Hey, this word is also Spanish. I called my gran abuela, my best friend calls hers yaya. We also have yayo for grandfather, and los yayos for grandparents. Not Greek at all. Even though Greeks call theirs yiayiá.

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 09:30

Have you met many people able to do that?

Yes, plenty actually. I am one of them and met plenty of exchange students when I was studying abroad who did exactly that. It's not as unusual as some think and she's had an easier ride having relatives living in Spain for 9 years, no doubt picking up the local accent if they indeed communicate in Spanish as their first language.

to have to explain why she speaks another language with her family

This is Hilaria Baldwin, a wife of an actor. I don't think the world cared as much about the language she uses at home in the first place, until she started her lies.

zzizz · 28/12/2020 09:30

She is very bravely raising awareness of how hard it is to be Spanish in America. All the cis-Spanish females should be grateful.

RaspberryCoulis · 28/12/2020 09:32

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilaria_Baldwin

Mother worked as a doctor and teacher at Harvard medical school, she attended a private school in Massachusetts, then uni in New York.

She has given her children VERY Spanish names: Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo, Romeo Alejandro, Eduardo.

Her wiki page also quotes "Baldwin's cousin said Baldwin is "zero percent Spanish" and the family had only spent time in Spain for vacations".

How very, very odd.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 09:33

She truly is stunning

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 09:33

And we are all making the huge assumption she identifies as a woman too. Check your cis privilege cis people.

zzizz · 28/12/2020 09:34

Cis-gusting

TheBigMelt · 28/12/2020 09:34

@zzizz

I hope all her Spanish sisters are rushing to welcome her with open arms. #nodebate

queenofarles · 28/12/2020 09:35

I know someone who loves all things Russian. read lots of Russian literature , Studied ,lived and worked there for a few years. She really knows so much about the country and its history and traditions to an extant we where chatting to a Russian academic who pointed out that she knows more about his country than he does!
But she doesn’t identify as Russian , she just says that she grew up having this attachment to all things Russian.!

Poppingnostopping · 28/12/2020 09:35

Lots of interesting points. Just came to say though, if my name was Hillary, I'd probably change it as well! Sorry to all Hillary's and all that.

MichelleScarn · 28/12/2020 09:36

Maybe Hilaria is actually very 'brave' and is doing this to highlight the ridiculousness of as a pp used the Descartes 'l say l am x therefore l am x, and any query of this is violence/death etc. etc' look at the derision she is getting.

She's had six kids in 8 years and she still spends time to speak in Spanish and English on Instagram? Never mind where she was born, I'd like to know where she gets her energy. I have no kids, speak one language, don't have Instagram and I still feel like I need a daily nap.
