Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

Ballstothis148 · 28/12/2020 00:24

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

...and in Spain

No, that's what she claimed, but it has since transpired her and her family have always lived in America and only spent holiday in Spain. Her family resides in Spain since 2011. She would have been mid-20s or older when they moved there.

ivfbeenbusy · 28/12/2020 08:48

Did she ever actually come out and say she was Spanish though or did everyone just assume she was???

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 08:51

Up until recently she claimed she was born in Mallorca and moved to the US when she was 19.

diddl · 28/12/2020 08:52

@ivfbeenbusy

Did she ever actually come out and say she was Spanish though or did everyone just assume she was???
I wondered that.

I must admit though that I don't follow anything posted by her, but I've never thought of her of anything other than a rich, white American!

cosmopolitanplease · 28/12/2020 08:52

I can't believe some posters are denying transcultural people's existence. Culturequeer folks exist and don't need this literal violence y'all! American 👏 Spaniards 👏 ARE 👏 Spaniards 👏

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/12/2020 08:53

Whoopsie. The lies will always catch up with you eventually.

Beefcurtains79 · 28/12/2020 08:53

She was born and raised in the US

...and in Spain

Except she wasn’t, her family have never lived in Spain until her parents retired to Majorca in 2011.

DivGirl · 28/12/2020 08:55

@NotaChocoholic

She was born and raised in the US

She was born in America. Raised in America. Her parents are both born and raised Americans who were professors in Massachusetts for pretty much their entire careers. The family went to Spain for holidays and then the parents retired to Spain when “Hilaria” was 27 or 28.

She’s about as Spanish as I am (which, for reference, is 0%).

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 08:57

But what if you feel you are Spanish, inside? Wouldn't you want that affirmed?

ravenmum · 28/12/2020 08:59

I have no clue who this woman is, are you her PR agent?

I'm German, with a German surname and a German first name that I pronounce with a German accent. When talking to Germans.

When I'm talking to British people, I'm British, and have an American-looking surname and a British first name that I pronounce with a southern English accent.

When I'm talking to my family in Essex, I gradually regain an Essex accent.

Feel free to gossip among yourselves.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 28/12/2020 08:59

I thought Hispanic was used to describe cultures with strong links to the Spanish Empire, but not actually Spain itself? So, essentially, Latin America?

I could be wrong... does anyone know?

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 09:02

If she feels like she’s a Spanish woman born into the wrong body who are we to judge? Let her live her truth

Since when did living a lie become living one's truth? Let's all be delusional fools in this case. This isn't the role-play box in the nursery block, my friend. This is real life.

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 09:05

I thought Hispanic was used to describe cultures with strong links to the Spanish Empire, but not actually Spain itself? So, essentially, Latin America? You are right. HB herself doesn't understand it based on her explanations.

Feel free to gossip among yourselves.

Unless you start pulling off a HB, there really isn't anything to gossip about.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 09:07

Vanguard completely agree. Tired of being told I'm wrong, a bigot for feeling that way.

MrsRogerLima · 28/12/2020 09:07

There are clearly some posters here who don't get the references to the piss taking trans threads.

Hilaria is culturally appropriating Hispanic heritage by trying to use it to make herself more 'interesting' sadly I also think possibly suffers with poor mental health or at the very least seriously low self esteem.

If she weren't so in the public eye I would agree with those saying just let her get on with it, but she is on a public stage and doing enormous damage. Cultural appropriation is never OK. This has gone further than just picking up a hint of an accent.

John Barrowman is a good example. Of someone who unconsciously adapts to his surroundings but he never claims to be American.

Campervan69 · 28/12/2020 09:07

She’s a Spanish person born in the wrong country. Imagine how awful that must feel. I think she’s being very brave

Stunning and brave. She is living her true life and this is how she is treated when she is dead cultured? Bigots!

Kalula · 28/12/2020 09:08

@TheVanguardSix I think you and a couple of others are missing the sarcastic references to transgender and aren't getting the sarcasm.....

WilsonMilson · 28/12/2020 09:08

This is so wtf, and exactly the sort of batshittery we need right now. It’s a blessed relief from all the other misery.

My theory is that she went with exotic Spanish temptress when she met Alec. He seemed to really like this woman she had created, so she kept up the persona for the first few dates, not thinking that it would go anywhere. Or perhaps desperate for it to go somewhere so became the person she thought he wanted.

Apparently they met in the August and were married by the next spring, so reasonably easy to keep up the charade for the first few months. By then though, she was in too deep to drop it, so just became ‘Spanish’.

It’s so nuts, I love it. I wonder what on earth Alec thinks. Is he currently wondering who the hell he married? Her commitment to the lie can’t be faulted though, she even gave her kids Spanish sounding names, such madness.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 09:10

If your family is from Spain, you'd just say Spanish. Hispanic means countries/territories that are Spanish speaking. You will obviously meet way more Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans in the States than actual Spaniards. So the term Hispanic is applicable in this case.

Genderless · 28/12/2020 09:11

I don't know, y'all. Still waiting for my pension as a transOAP. Not sure when we'll be recognised for who we are!

She's who she says she is. Stop the violence against this Spaniard!

Lookslikerainted · 28/12/2020 09:12

I find it so weird I can’t find any explanation for it at all. Did she go to primary school there?

Meowchickameowmeow · 28/12/2020 09:12

@StealthPolarBear

But what if you feel you are Spanish, inside? Wouldn't you want that affirmed?
Oh, give over.
RaspberryCoulis · 28/12/2020 09:13

I'm not bilingual but I do speak Spanish fluently. I do speak Spanish to my kids sometimes, especially when they were younger and obsessed with Dora the Explore and Go Diego Go. People on MN probably think I'm a dick and my kids too as they say chorizo properly - not choritzoh.

But when I'm doing all that I'm not pretending to be Spanish, so the rest of it is a bit weird.

Meowchickameowmeow · 28/12/2020 09:13

I think she's such a personality vacuum that she had to invent something/anything to appear more interesting.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 09:14

Kalula You're right. I am. How embarrassing. I need to go back a page or two to keep up with the thread more. I hadn't realised that poster (Maybe it was you) was mucking about. There are enough MNers who would actually write 'she's living in truth' and mean it. I stand by my post though. Grin
