What do you have in your dining room?

We are moving house soon and will have a proper dining room for the first time (our current house has a living room/dining room rather than a whole separate room). Apart from table and chairs what else do you have in it? I feel like our table will look a bit silly if its the only thing in the room.

I would leave it until your baby becomes a toddler/ small child and it will become obvious what you need in there. Might be toy storage or crafts. We use our dining table all the time for crafts and jigsaws.

Table, six chairs, dresser, wine rack full .... it's not a very big room and the table is really too big for the room, we usually eat in the kitchen as it's big enough for a decent sized table & chairs but since eating in the dining room over Christmas I have really enjoyed using the room.

Trouble is I use it for my 'home admin' (of which I seem to have a lot) so the room is usually a mess with paperwork all over the table. Since March DH has worked from home and completely taken over the 'study' (a converted bedroom) so I can't keep my paperwork in there.

Phyzzy · 27/12/2020 21:58

Two desks and computers, filing cabinets and bookcases.
It was used as a dining room for 30 years but this year we moved the desks from the study into the dining room and made the study into a second sitting room.
We have dining table in kitchen and conservatory.

Dining table and eight chairs, sideboard which has candle holder and stereo on it (and table linens, placemats and some serving dishes in it), two tall candle holders either side of fireplace, dog bean bag, another floor standing iron candle holder. At the moment it also has the Christmas tree. The radiator has a cover and there are some ornaments on that. Four paintings and a wall sculpture.

LeSquigh · 27/12/2020 22:00

We started with only a table and chairs then naturally filled it up with all manner of shit that doesn’t belong anywhere else!

Oblomov20 · 27/12/2020 22:02

Round table and chairs, sideboard. Works well.

GintyMcGinty · 27/12/2020 22:04

Dining table and 6 chairs
Sideboard
Display cabinet

Plus usually an ironing board and pile of laundry. 😂

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 27/12/2020 22:06

Table and chairs. Desk and computer. Another desk which currently has all the Christmas food on, normally has a little set of wooden drawers with elastic bands and printer cartridges etc in. Piano. Bookcase. Cat bed, food bowls and litter tray. Set of wicker drawers with the printer on top, and printer paper and I think some piano music in. Various washing baskets and piles of clean laundry lying around...

Table and chairs, tall bookcase, big built in cupboard, piano, sofa. It's a good sized room with doors to the garden so we use it a lot.

1Morewineplease · 27/12/2020 22:09

A dining table, chairs, a huge dresser, a sofa, large plants, French windows, a side table, a sewing machine and a sit on storage unit.

Pugdogmom · 27/12/2020 22:13

Mine is a large Dining kitchen but with a clear demarcation IYSWIM, so Dining table ( extendable) , a console table that has a TV, lamp etc. Normally TV is in our garden room but we brought it in for winter as too cold.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 27/12/2020 22:14

Dining table + chairs
Sideboard with lamp, candles and vase
Ottoman (filled with Lego)
Small armchair and side table with lamp
Wine rack
Large mirror

SwanShaped · 27/12/2020 22:14

Table and chairs. Shelves for the kids games, paints and playdo. We use ours loads. Not sure why you wouldn’t use it, like a PP said. It’s a separate room.

FraughtwithGin · 27/12/2020 22:40

Table with 8 chairs.
Dresser with glasses, china and silver.
Corner cabinet with additional china and silver.
No room for anything else, my pianos are in other rooms ;-)

OhMsBeliever · 27/12/2020 22:43

Dining table & 6 chairs
A 4x4 cube unit (like kallax but it's not from IKEA)
A computer table
A drum kit (you don't want one of those though Grin)

DrMadelineXMASwell · 27/12/2020 22:49

Table and chairs.
Piano.
4 foot wide fish tank.
Display cupboard in an alcove.
Usually a low cupboard with a lamp and the printer on it in another. Currently has the christmas tree in that alcove though as the back room is bigger so we use it as a living room and I also like it that you can see the tree through the window.

P.S @Mousehole10 I see you have a baby- congratulations!

We eat at our dining table with our 20 month old every day- it’s totally doable and a great family habit to get in to.

Ignore the naysayers on here who say you won’t use it- you will if it’s the only room you have a table. I’m really glad we eat with DS every day.

MeredithGreysScalpel · 27/12/2020 22:57

My desk, a shelving unit with boxes, a bookcase and the dog’s crate, as well as table and chairs. The clothes horse is there in the winter, and we did have a large dolls house until recently.

taskmasterfan · 27/12/2020 23:07

I had a separate dining room (and only eating space) at my last place and a large through one in my new place plus a dining area in the kitchen. Both have worked well. Family meals are always at the table bar the odd pizza.

Mine has a table and six chairs and a bureau now. I also had a desk/sideboard in the last place. Lamps. But what i had had in both is a wingback armchair. Even if you can't fit in sofas see if you can arrange things so you at least have a comfortable chair where you can seperate yourself from children's tv or toys and quietly have a coffee or read a book. That chair to retreat to has proved valuable to us all even the children and made it a much more heavily used space. Both times with lovely views of the garden.

BarkHoneyBark · 27/12/2020 23:21

Old house had dining table that could seat 8 and on occasion 12 (uncomfortably ) a bookcase and 2 built in cupboard with side of fireplace. Used once a week as dining room. Rest of time frankly a dumping ground as we ate in kitchen.

New house, sideboard, table, all the large plants, some renovation stuff.we’ve used it as a dining room 3 times in a year.

It’s a gloomy room in dire need of a redecorate.

Bloodybridget · 27/12/2020 23:27

Large table and six chairs, a dresser, a trunk, a keyboard and chair, DP's huge desk and chair, two lots of ladder shelves, a shelf unit in an alcove, a little chest of drawers in another alcove. It's a big room and we rarely eat there. I use one end of the table as a desk, and we often have a jigsaw on the go at the other end. It's well used.

Bloodybridget · 27/12/2020 23:27

Oh and a rocking chair!

Acidrain · 27/12/2020 23:28

Dining table, sofa, toybox, kids play kitchen, its just off the kitchen so use daily.

Serin · 27/12/2020 23:28

We turned ours into a guest bedroom, as we ate in the kitchen. Then we decided to knock through into the kitchen and it has given us a lovely kitchen/dinner, complete with ping pong table, that kept us going through lockdown.

Sceptre86 · 27/12/2020 23:33

A large table, 12 chairs and a sideboard. We need a cabinet for me to store my glassware but not sure where to find a nice one.
