What do you have in your dining room?

We are moving house soon and will have a proper dining room for the first time (our current house has a living room/dining room rather than a whole separate room). Apart from table and chairs what else do you have in it? I feel like our table will look a bit silly if its the only thing in the room.

Ours is a weird transition room between the kitchen and living room:

Table and chairs (as of this week! Before we had a big, relatively speaking, open space, which I actually preferred and we've never minded eating from the sofa, but we got the table down out of the loft for Christmas and we're going to try leaving it there)

Fridge and tumble dryer under the stairs (again, weird layout)

My WFH set up in one corner in a little nook

A big sideboard with our record player, records, and a few photos on. A shelf above it where we put the record sleeve we're currently playing, instead of a piece of art of something. I like it, we can change it depending on what we're listening to.

Table & 6 chairs, small console table in an alcove which had a lamp and some photos on. TV on the wall (leftover from when it used to be a playroom) and an armoire that we use for storing drinks, board games, place mats, stationary and other bits and bobs.

Ours is a living/dining room that was knocked through from two rooms by a previous owner but that we have arranged into two very distinct spaces so for all intents and purposes it’s like two rooms.

In the dining area we have a table and chairs obviously (ours is extendable), plus a sideboard, a wine rack, and a small bookcase which is where I keep my cookbooks. We keep booze and also tablecloths, napkins etc in the sideboard and have candles, a fruit bowl and CD player on top. We have some photos on one wall and a large art print on another.

A table and chairs, a two seater sofa and an armchair, a fireplace with log burner, a butcher’s block unit with baskets, and a small 3 drawer unit.

We have an extendable table and 6 chairs then 2 high bookshelves that have all the kids craft materials in them along with many of our books. We only eat in there occasionally as we also have a kitchen table but we do crafts, homework, Lego building & similar.

Ours is another sitting room...the kitchen is big enough for a large table, so the dining room has a giant squishy sofa in it, when the children were younger the computer/games consoles were in there, book cases also. TV too, for dvds ..that worked really well when they were younger and all at home.

There's a woodburning stove in there too, so it's really cosy, I like it more than the real sitting room tbh, but it only has the dvd tv and you have to listen to ds2 gaming and the squishy sofa is too low for dh and makes his bad back play up so it only gets used for high days and holidays!
You have to walk through it to get to the kitchen which is stuck on the side of the house

It also has a large cupboard in which I laughingly call "the office" ...it's all shelved with a tiny desk in there ..ds2 gaming computer is in there atm .

Elphame · 27/12/2020 21:50

Dining table and 8 chairs, armchair, piano, grandfather clock, large fireplace with cooking range (not used!) and quite often a clothes airer

ScrapThatThen · 27/12/2020 21:52

If you got a smaller or extendable table you would have space for a toddler play area, or a chair/sofa. All my friends turned their dining rooms into playrooms during the toddler years because they have so many toys!

Serenity45 · 27/12/2020 21:53

Dining table and chairs comfy sofa with beautiful rug between sofa and table, built in shelves in one alcove TV unit/spare TV in the other (rarely used tbf so looking at shelving for that alcove too). Lucky that it's a big room!

CounsellorTroi · 27/12/2020 21:53

Dining table, chairs, dresser, bookcase, recliner chair.

WitchDancer · 27/12/2020 21:53

Dining table and chairs with a matching sideboard, two bookcases, my craft shelves, and (temporarily) my desk for working from home. The guinea pigs also moved in there in their indoor hutch when it got too cold outside, but I've created a better spot for them in the kitchen so they'll stay in there.

OxfordwillsaveusbyFebruary · 27/12/2020 21:55

I dont use mine

I once went in to set it up for Easter lunch to find the remnants of New Year Eve on the table

TheCanyon · 27/12/2020 21:55

Eh my living room Grin

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2020 21:56

We have a decent sized table in the kitchen, so allowed the DC to take over the dining room as a playroom then a teen den. When the youngest finally moves out I'm looking forward to reclaiming it. As what, I'm not sure yet.
