I know I am for asking here but I need help...what's the best dish to take to a get together when it has to be vegetarian?

I'm in Oz...so it's Summer here. DH and I are invited to a friend's house for a bit of a get together tomorrow and here it's usual to bring a dish or two to add to the mix...normally it's meat based or something for the BBQ...for eg. people might bring some chicken or steak or lamb chops or whatever.

Host is veggie and I'm just stuck. We DO eat vegetarian meals but generally hot things like curry and I don't want to make a curry...it's too hot and it will need to be warmed up when we get there.

Salad...everyone will bring that...bloody pasta or potato salad...

I was thinking of making some guacamole and other dip type things and bringing a load of tortillas but that seems too boring.

Maybe a desert? Any ideas please? I have to go shopping soon and the shops are closed here tomorrow so I won't get another chance before the get together.

What about some cheesy nachos with the guacamole and other dips?

ragged · 27/12/2020 00:52

I love potato salad so not understanding the problem. Chilled in hot weather -- the best.

Raw veg & dips? I like to bring veg when possible.

Try Crank’s recipe for lentil burgers and herby yoghurt dressing. People are always amazed at how good they are, delicious hot or cold.

Cheese and onion pie

grassisjeweled · 27/12/2020 00:54

Big pasta salad, with some sort of beans or lentils in it?

Fizzorgin · 27/12/2020 00:54

Veggie kebabs! I'm a carnivore and still love a veg kebab. Red onion, mushrooms, corn, red peppers etc etc etc.

Plus a huge fruit salad.

grassisjeweled · 27/12/2020 00:54

Or falafel, hummus, pita, fatoush salad, then maybe baklava to continue the theme?

Fizzorgin · 27/12/2020 00:55

And omf falafel. With sweet chilli sauce: and some Tzatziki

Skewers with mushrooms, peppers, onions, halloumi

Corn on the cobs and jacket potatoes or a rice salad

Portobello mushrooms filled with pesto

Roasted peppers filled with risotto

Rainbowqueeen · 27/12/2020 00:59

Quiche or zucchini slice.

Devilled eggs

FortunesFave · 27/12/2020 01:00

I see Kebabs are popular...but I don't have skewers and reluctant to buy them since I won't use them!

Spanish omelette

Trisolaris · 27/12/2020 01:00

Lots of really good dips that aren’t boring.

I make a a cannellini bean dip with roasted peppers, lemon and garlic which goes down really well along with tirokafteri (spicy feta dip)

Tiropitakia (cheese pastry parcel), courgette fritters, lots of good veggie mini pies you can make.

FortunesFave · 27/12/2020 01:02

I did write another response! Seems I deleted it by accident!

No pasta or potato salad! Thanks all so much but everyone makes that at these things...they're so easy that people always turn to them.

I love the idea of fruit salad and I think the dips will probably be a good idea too....

Halloumi is amazing on the BBQ. Delia has a recipe for a lovely lime and caper dressing for halloumi.

Kebabs are also a fun idea. You can get wooden kebab sticks that aren’t expensive.

Peach halves to BBQ with honey and yoghurt or something.

Quiche

Home made guacamole is amazing so you wouldn’t be going wrong with that!

Oh corn on the cob is nice on the BBQ too

WilmaPantry · 27/12/2020 01:08

watermelon salad

Nigella’s watermelon and feta salad is refreshing if it’s hot and really easy to make.

Thisyearis2020 · 27/12/2020 01:08

Frittata. Individual ones made in little bun tins are easy for people to help themselves to.

Spanakopita? Really easy to make and always goes down a storm.

This salad is superb and perfect for a bbq: smittenkitchen.com/2007/03/mediterranean-eggplant-barley-salad/

Possibly a bit faffy at short notice, but the beetroot and halloumi salad element of this recipe is gorgeous:

Aubergine 'steaks' - marinated in lots of olive oil, and served with a yoghurt dressing. Full fat yoghurt with some garlic and grated zest of an orange.

k1233 · 27/12/2020 01:24

I'd probably make a mango salad - leaves, cucumber, tomato, capsicum, grated beetroot, grated carrot, mint leaves, mushroom, avocado and mango slices.

A super yum desert I did at Christmas is halve strawberries, top with a small dob of cream cheese mixed with icing sugar to taste (1/3 - 1/2 cup icing sugar mixed with a block of philly), then top with a blueberry.

I used to have the most amazing bbq feta receipe. I will try and find it tomorrow but the gist is:

Pack of feta, cut into flat quarters and marinade for as long as you can (ideally overnight) in a mix of olive oil, garlic, fresh rosemary and pepper.

Caramelise red onion, then add cumin, brown sugar and balsamic (or maybe cider?) vinegar and reduce to make a sticky jam.

Cut squares of foil, put a tablespoon of the onion jam in the middle of each one, top with a feta quarter and fold into a parcel

Bbq or grill for about 10 mins (I think!)

Get squares of
