Received one and didn't realise it's supposedly an insult until everyone else's reaction

Thornton’s used to be lovely. Back in the day, they were handmade. Now they’re mass-produced and not one bit special any more.

Thornton's too sickly sweet for me, much prefer Aldi's Moser Roth grin

I was just about to mention them - their 85 or is it 90% is good if you like dark, the whole hazelnut is ace

I like the chilli one best.

SophieGiroux · 27/12/2020 00:31

What is Tony's chocolate like? I've seen it in Sainsbury's but balked at the price! I might consider it if it's worth it.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/12/2020 00:33

To us chocolate is well worth the price!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/12/2020 00:33

To us = Tony's

SusannaSpider · 27/12/2020 00:34

I hate that I find out things like this on Mumsnet. I was the council house kid who dated (and married) the middle class boy from money (though they claimed to be struggling🙄). We've been together a long time now, but when dating I always gave his parents Thornton's chocolates for Xmas etc as for me that was a huge step up. Now I cringe thinking that they may have thought I was showing my lack of taste.

FangsForTheMemory · 27/12/2020 00:37

When you were buying them, they probably were ok.

Santaisreel · 27/12/2020 00:39

I also don't see why some Mumsnetters consider chocolates as such as a 'thoughtless gift'. I

Lifting a box of chocolates from a supermarket shelf requires no thought, that's probably why.

StormcloakNord · 27/12/2020 00:41

I would never think awful of anyone for giving Thornton's chocolate. We got some this year from a relative and I appreciated it but I absolutely hate Thornton's chocolate. It's bloody gross!!

ultrablue · 27/12/2020 00:41

@evilharpy

You are right Hersey's do taste of sick

I like a 100% dark chocolate myself

Kpo58 · 27/12/2020 00:41

Thornton's used to be good. Now they just taste odd and buttery (but not in a good way).

caringcarer · 27/12/2020 00:41

I quite like them. A good variety of chocolates imo.

Utterlyshafted · 27/12/2020 00:43

Weird thread, I would be so happy with Thornton’s chocs.

IMO so much nicer than Hotel Chocolate.

Chienloup · 27/12/2020 00:44

Ha ha! My MIL went one better than buying me a box of Thorntons: As I unwrapped them she said "I didn't pay full price for them!"
So rude, so hilarious.

SusannaSpider · 27/12/2020 00:48

You are right Hersey's do taste of sick

Supposedly because it contains butyric acid 🤷 I can cope with the Cookies and Ctesm, but the ordinary stuff does have a vomitty taste.

MrsToothyBitch · 27/12/2020 00:48

@SusannaSpider you sound lovely and thoughtful!

The only time my mum objected to a box of Thorntons was when they came from my ex with zero thought and no grace for Christmas. He was very busy and stressed but she knew I'd offered to help him out with suggestions and actually do the legwork on their present because I finish early in Dec and so have the time for it and know their taste. He refused help, sulked and complained about being stressed and too busy and broke. Handed over a box of Thorntons and handed them over unwrapped, along with my presents from the pound shop whilst showing them his newly acquired rolex and making out he had put in herculanean effort.

akerman · 27/12/2020 00:56

Years ago Thornton’s was deemed classy susanna, so don’t worry. And I think loads and loads of people would still be just as pleased today. I would be. I’m not a massive fan of expensive chocolate.

StrawberryTot · 27/12/2020 01:03

I’d be mortified, it’s the most awful tasting chocolate ever!

Pinkfreesias · 27/12/2020 01:08

Yesterday I was hearing about toiletries snobbery and today its chocolate. Unbelievable.

No, it is not an insult. If someone takes it that way, they need to get a grip.

BoomBoomsCousin · 27/12/2020 01:11

I'm another who thinks Hotel Chocolat is just over priced and not actually higher quality. I'm very happy to eat receive a box, but at least as happy with Thornton's, possibly more so.

BluebellsGreenbells · 27/12/2020 01:31

Nothing says ‘I don’t know anything about you’ than a box of chocolates.

They’ve taken zero interests in you all year and suddenly a box of chocolate screams ‘can’t be arsed’

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 27/12/2020 01:47

@BakedTattie

Do people genuinely think like this? About Thornton’s, milk tray, Baylis and Harding?

People are dick heads.

This ^^
FanGurrl · 27/12/2020 02:05

My 11 year old gave me aa box of Thornton's - more than happy with that ☺️

DioneTheDiabolist · 27/12/2020 02:06

Thornton's chocolate are shit now. When I was in my early 20s a box of Thorton's cost around £6. 25 years later the same size box costs £3.Xmas Shock

It's not even chocolate anymore, it's brown sweets.Xmas Sad

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 27/12/2020 02:26

Thorntons Alpini are my lifelong favourite chocolates. They’re on the pricey side for me to spend on chocolates for myself though, so I only really get them as a present! I’d be delighted!
