living off savings for 16months

Just wondering what the general feeling is….
Is it fair that a self employed workers who used to earn £51k have to live off savings for 16months, whilst paye workers who earn £51k get £2.5k a month.
how can this be right? A family member used to work in the West End and is self employed. They're really struggling now. They can't even claim Universal credit as they have some online coaching work they do, but this doesn't cover their bills apparently, but stops them from getting the benefits. As I understand this, it must be wrong. What am I missing? Theatre was closed down, so why can't the actors etc be furloughed and get some money to see them through?

Re January Tax
I am telling all clients to file on time - to avoid the penalty
and then to pay 10% of their tax bill by the 31st
as if you have filed and made a payment you are compliant but in arrears
and then the worst they can do is charge you interest on the overdue amount
(currently 2.6% which on a bill of £1000 is 7p per day)
Its not ideal but it means you can eat.

I'll pass that on to my still slightly panicked friend 😊

Samphire
Its a piece of advice that HMRC loathe but there is very little they can do about it.
Also, every time they write to you about the arrears, pay a little bit
as then you are showing willing
AND
the letters will not be for the same amount
so its less likely to go to the debt collectors
(been doing it for MANY years)

I’m self employed - most of my work is seasonal. Normally at this time of the year I’d be earning very little. This year I’m better off.

Yes, being employed has certain in-work benefits, and being self-employed has different benefits, but that shouldn't have anything to do with the support people receive during a global pandemic
illnesses, a very reliable customer going bankrupt, a jail time, a global pandemic. It doesn't matter what the unexpected life event is, being self-employed means you are reliable on being able to conduct your business and getting the customers.

I genuinely do feel for people in this situation, of course it's terrible but I don't think it's wrong that self employed are not getting the sane advantages than employed people.

Are you really trying to compare an unprecedented global pandemic to illness?

I have insurance that protects my income if a customer doesn't pay me, or if I'm unwell or injured and unable to work. But, funnily enough, I don't have insurance that protects me against a global pandemic - because nobody does.

The economy relies on self-employed workers just as much as it relies on employed ones. Self-employed people pay tax too and should be treated fairly in situations like this. The fact that you think they shouldn't speaks volumes, tbh. It's a truly disgusting attitude.

Business Continuity insurance has not paid out for LOTS of organisations in 2020
some cases have gone to the High Court
but many companies and traders who thought they were insured have lost out.

Oh look! Another list of things that could never ever affect a 'real' business. Just us second class citizens.

Utter fucking poppycock!
