The obligatory Bayliss and Harding...

Have recieved two sets this year. One from FIL and one from DH's Aunt. Also had another smelly set from DSIL. I have severe Eczema and can't use any of these types of sets. No shame in saying all will be going to the charity shops in the New Year.

FIL gave DH a bunch of cash, some new clothes, chocolate bits, etc. I got a Bayliss and Harding Set I can't even use. Hmm

Anyone else get the obligatory Bayliss and Harding set? Or maybe some other unthoughtful gifts from the in laws?

Best thing about covid is BIL didn’t visit and gift me one shite box.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 25/12/2020 14:35

I like them, I like the packaging but of course I never get them from anyone. Grin

phoenixrosehere · 25/12/2020 14:39

You can’t expect everyone to know you have eczema.

True, BUT you can expect someone to at least ASK or have some consideration when they know you have a skin condition.

I know smellies can be a personal thing so I do this logical thing and ask someone who knows the receiver best. I ask if they even like smellies and if so what scents do they love. I take into consideration what I know of the receiver because I catalog in my head their likes and dislikes because I care and want them to like, love and/or be able to enjoy their gift. It’s pointless imo to waste money on a thoughtless gift and ridiculous to expect the receiver to be grateful because they received a gift in the first place.

AnnaMagnani · 25/12/2020 14:39

Also it's not pots over £50 that don't cause migraine.

It's likely anything scented that causes it. I've had naice posh gifts of hand cream that have been opened, sniffed and straight away given to someone else.

During the time I've had both migraine and ezcema I've used cheap products and fancy ones according to what my budget was at the time.

Thewiseoneincognito · 25/12/2020 14:41

OMG Chuck it in the bin what a ghastly hideous thing. The very poor mans Molton Brown. OP why does your FIL have such contempt for you? 😆

starryeyed19 · 25/12/2020 14:43

A tin of Lidl shortbread from my soon to be BIL and his wife and nothing from my soon to be SIL. We got them both a little hamper from M&S for a night in. I'm choosing to believe that they got their brother a present and leaving it at that but we've been together for six years and are getting married in a few months. I barely know them and I'm not sure how much more of an effort I'm going to make trying to.

It's wanting someone to put a little thought into something is all.

ilovesooty · 25/12/2020 14:44

@Beebumble2

Waitrose keep substituting my hand wash order with B&H. I now decant it into an anonymous dispenser! What are they doing!
Is this serious?
ItsNotNormalLove · 25/12/2020 14:44

No Baylis & Harding received here but also not a fan due to eczema.

My MIL got DH and I a joint present this year. It is an 'experience' tour of a certain factory. It can't be regifted, refunded, charity shopped or transferred. It is HUNDREDS of miles away, meaning we'd have to pay for travel and accommodation in an area we have no interest in visiting. This is so opposite to the sort of thing we would enjoy.

Usually she asks us what we'd like and gets that or she gets us random but more thoughtful/useful presents.

LovingLen · 25/12/2020 14:46

I thought it was just hand wash like Carex that you get from Tesco or Amazon, I get it when it's on offer, it's not particularly bad, just basic hand wash. I didn't realise it's a thing on here like Zoflora which people on here seem to like but is eye wateringly smelly

Jobseeker19 · 25/12/2020 14:46

I would refill up the soap dispenser with it. Or use it as washing up liquid.

starryeyed19 · 25/12/2020 14:47

It's pretty shit of them OP

jessstan1 · 25/12/2020 14:48

@NorbertMeubles

All the people defending Baylis and Harding gift sets have so obviously chucked them in their supermarket trolley and thought ' that'll do' 😀
No they haven't, I chose mine very carefully and now wish I hadn't. I could cry.
Eloradannin · 25/12/2020 14:49

I didn't get any smellies this year. I moved from the UK last Christmas and its only me DH and 2 DCs this year.
I'd have loved to see my Dad and open a Bayliss and Hardy gifts etc from him.
Be grateful for what you've got. Some people can't even afford food this Christmas.

kimlo · 25/12/2020 14:53

@jessstan1 don't wish you hadn't bought it. If the person you bought it for doesn't have skin problems I bet they'll enjoy using it. I would if I didn't have to stick to a very small amount of stuff that I know I'm ok with.

Pinkfreesias · 25/12/2020 14:55

Was wondering how long it'd be before the anti B&H snobbery started.

LovingLen · 25/12/2020 14:55

It doesn't look anything like molton brown, the hand wash I have doesn't anyway,

fairydustandpixies · 25/12/2020 14:59

I was given a second hand set of soap which must be about 10 yrs old from my elderly neighbour! Bless her, though, she was being thoughtful! It's more than I got from adult DS, not a card or even a text from him.

DanaScully53 · 25/12/2020 15:06

I got chocolates from MIL. She is fully aware I am diabetic. More for my OH.

XmasBelle · 25/12/2020 15:06

@XmasGridlock and everyone else!!

Mate, just regift them back to them at Easter/birthday/Next Christmas!!

Don't beat them, join them!!

ChocolateCherrybomb · 25/12/2020 15:08

There are way too many people on here ignoring the severe exzema part of your post. Would the same people think someone with a peanut allergy should be grateful to receive a bag of salted peanuts for Christmas from someone who knew of their allergy.

When you have severe exzema, what random smellies do is basically cause an almost immediate and very nasty allergic reaction (contact dermatitis that is more like a chemical burn really) from just the smallest application that can cause pain and scabbing that takes weeks or months to get rid of with steroid cream and can leave you scarred for life in severe cases. I put ONE drop of tea tree oil on my arm once, still have the scarring seven years later.

phoenixrosehere · 25/12/2020 15:10

Be grateful for what you've got. Some people can't even afford food this Christmas.

Be grateful that your FIL ignores that you have eczema and buys a gift that you can’t use...

Also, what does someone not being able to afford something have to do with this? There are people who can’t afford food year-round, do you bring this up on gift threads other times of the year? Doubt it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/12/2020 15:12

I got two! They smell good to me, and I've never had problems from using them.

As long as nobody paid over the odds for them thinking it was a premium brand, I'm happy.

Blowingagale · 25/12/2020 15:18

Yanbu to want close family to think carefully and avoid presents that you cannot use due to the eczema.

I think you and various other poster are being unreasonable to mock B&H and those who gift it as all thoughtless. It’s just like any other brand. I don’t understand the disdain some on MN have for it and this it’s just rude.

XmasGridlock · 25/12/2020 15:19

@jessstan1 don't think that. If you've chosen their gifts with thought and care and they don't have any skin conditions then I imagine the recipients will love their gifts from you.

In fact, the sets I got do actually look really lovely, it's a shame I can't use them. It's only poorly thought out in my case because of my eczema which they know about. So for me, it's a thoughtless gift. But that obviously isn't the case for the people you have bought them for.

TheGoogleMum · 25/12/2020 15:21

I usually get one from my in laws. I dont tend to get round to using them (I've never been big on moisturiser). Didnt get one this year, but I dont mind! I can't help thinking its a bit of a waste of money really
