To be annoyed by people who claim they live in a different area due to snobbery reasons?

Why do people do this? Are they so insecure they have to pretend they are somewhere else?

I know much of this rubbish comes from estate agents, but some people seem to take it to heart......

Two classic examples from people I know.....

1.) "I live in North West Hampstead" (They live in Cricklewood)

2.) "I'm on Farnham Borders" (They live in Aldershot)

Ridiculous.

Hyacinth Bouquet!! Flowers
I was bought up to be a snob and to lie about such things due to my mother's superiority complex. I've had to work hard to undo it.

glasshalfsomething · 25/12/2020 17:05

@Pedallleur

Sale near Mcr. Shares the same postcode as Wythenshawe, home of Liam/Noel Gallagher but someone I work with believes Sale is somehow the same as Holland Park or some glitzy part of Cheshire
Off topic, but thought the brothers were from Burnage (now renamed as East Didsbury) in another forced Estate Agency Gentrification.
Cameleongirl · 25/12/2020 17:09

@StillGardening

I’ve got reverse. Live in a village considered snobby by the local small town. So if anyone asks , always say live in the small town 😁
Same here. Especially when someone’s giving me an estimate for something like repairs, plumbing, etc.. It’s a local joke that everything goes up 20% when a contractor realizes which neighborhood you live in. Luckily I’m at the non-posh, smaller houses end so people don’t always know we’re still technically in the posh area.😂
Hoppinggreen · 25/12/2020 17:13

To be fair we moved from 1 town to another and had no idea which bit was supposed to be posh here and which wasn’t, although I did wonder why the Estate Agent kept saying “your postcode is a x village postcode you know “. The day we moved in we ordered a take away and when it arrived (late) I was treated to a lecture by the delivery man about how I shouldn’t pretend to live in x village when I didn’t
So not everyone does it deliberately

Bloodybridget · 25/12/2020 17:25

I've lived in the London borough of Hackney for thirty years, it's generally known for deprivation, crime and grime, but there is also a lot of wealth and gentrification. Our area is "naicer", but I always just say "Hackney" for the fun of seeing people shudder!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 25/12/2020 17:37

I lived in Walthamstow 'village' for a few years.

Not complaining sold the house for twice as much as I brought it because in the villageGrin

Rosehip10 · 25/12/2020 17:45

@glasshalfsomething I always thought East Didsbury was a different/distinct area (albeit adjacent) to Burnage.

I live in a shitty town. It's very close to a touristy town.
When I say I live in [shittytown] people say Ugh. When I say I live just outside [touristytown] they say Ooh.

Some people who live in the town say they live in [area], [county], and will not venture into the town centre.

Someone I used to work with said he lived on the outskirts of [nice town in Surrey]. He lived about 12 miles from the town, on the outskirts of a not so nice town in Hampshire.

TeachesOfPeaches · 25/12/2020 17:51

See it all the time in Rightmove. Blackheath when it's actually Kidbrooke, although they both have the SE3 postcode.

SinkGirl · 25/12/2020 17:55

Where I live there a long really road with lots of shops - anything above that is “upper X” where it seems nobody wants to live, and below is “lower X” which is significantly more expensive because there are some nice areas in it. But if you live a couple of houses down from the road, you’re in “lower X” apparently, even though nowhere near the bits that are nice.

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 25/12/2020 18:02

People who live in Worsley and insist they are either a complete town on their own, or that it’s part of Manchester. People who live in Swinton or Walkden and insist they live in Worsley. Heck, even the university of Salford tried to sneak ‘Manchester’ into their name a few years ago. You live in Salford. Own it.

gabsdot45 · 25/12/2020 18:28

This might not translate if you don't know Dublin but I once bought something online and when I contacted the seller to arrange collection she told me she lived 'near Howth' (Howth is a beautiful, pricey seaside suburb)
When I went to her house she actually lived in Kilbarrack, (a rough council estate about 15 minutes from Howth.)

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 25/12/2020 18:34

I laugh when clients tell me they live in Stevenage Old Town, rather than just Stevenage. I also get people telling me they live in Hitchin, when in fact they they live in Stotfold.

Cocomarine · 25/12/2020 18:34

My village fb page regularly froths about this 🤣

New development is about 1 mile beyond our village boundary sign, and that mile is undeveloped, so it’s clearly not just been subsumed. Said development borders two suburbs that are less wealthy, and town suburbs, not nice village. Estate Agents calls it Nice Village. It isn’t. I don’t care - but it amuses me the froth from the Nice Villagers 🙄

nosswith · 25/12/2020 18:39

If individuals do this, they are just silly. If estate agents do this, it is a form of deceit.

Though the worst example is a football team that play in Trafford, not Manchester.

Ha I used to live in that neck of the woods. You also get the Bragbury End lot, who basically live in Stevenage but don't want to say they live in Stevenage so pretend it's a different area. And yeah, Stotfold isn't Hitchin. I think it's technically in Bedfordshire.

I now live in a small town which used to be a village until about 20 years ago. The snootier residents will get upset if you call it a town which is hilarious.

Literallynoidea · 25/12/2020 19:21

I live in a smart part of London but if I meet people who I think might judge me harshly for that, I tell them I live in the neighbouring bit which is a bit rougher round the edges.

RandyGiles06 · 25/12/2020 19:52

I moved from a market town to another town about 10 miles away. They are pretty much exactly the same and equal in terms of “naice” areas and rough areas, but they have different postcodes. I couldn’t give a shit what people think and will happily explain to people that we moved to get a cheaper house but the amount of rude comments I have had is sad.

MerryChristmasToYou · 25/12/2020 20:05

People can be very rude. Ignore them.

EllaBonjelaNutella · 25/12/2020 20:24

@PeachesBright

Closest tube stop to me is Ladbroke Grove.

If I'm feeling a bit posh.. I live in "North Kensington"

If I'm feeling very posh.. I live in "Notting Hill"

Xmas Grin

I grew up in this area in the 70s, also close to Ladbroke Grove. Back then if you said "Notting Hill" people just thought "...riots" and assumed you were trouble/rough, so we were advised at school to always say "North Kensington".

Funny how things change!

Mooncupdotcom · 25/12/2020 20:33

Local village has a street with a lot of v posh new builds. Incomers have collectively renamed it something flowery and inoffensive - not outing)

Presumably didn't like living on what has been known for at least 100 years as Pigturdy Lane...

smeerf · 25/12/2020 20:35

I grew up in Deptford. According to the estate agents of the new build flats at Deptford Bridge, AKA "Blackheath Approach".

SeaWitchly · 25/12/2020 20:39

Ah Blackheath... yes, we used to live in a flat in one of the Victorian townhouses on Shooters Hill Rd.
We sold in 2019 and were designated as Blackheath re boundaries... but right on the edge of Charlton too 😁

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 25/12/2020 20:43

I lived somewhere that was generally defined by the big pub in the main road.

The local authority decided we lived in the Restaurant Quarter just as the first few overpriced and undersized blocks of flats started going up.
