To be annoyed by people who claim they live in a different area due to snobbery reasons?

Why do people do this? Are they so insecure they have to pretend they are somewhere else?

I know much of this rubbish comes from estate agents, but some people seem to take it to heart......

Two classic examples from people I know.....

1.) "I live in North West Hampstead" (They live in Cricklewood)

2.) "I'm on Farnham Borders" (They live in Aldershot)

Ridiculous.

Yep - I live on an ex council estate with a bit of a rough reputation, which borders a very mumsnetty village. Lots of estate agents bump houses from my area to the village! Anyone who knows the area will know what they’re doing from the postcodes!

DGRossetti · 25/12/2020 10:35

I grew up in South Harrow (technically Rayners Lane - just).

Never quite worked our how one set of neighbours lived in "Pinner" which was a tube stop further than Rayners Lane ...

Having moved to Brum, it's similarly perplexing how many people don't live in Moseley, but "Edgbaston". And not Weoley Castle, but Harborne Grin ...

Ginfordinner · 25/12/2020 10:37

DD old HT used to do this. The LA the school is under is Barnsley, but the address is Sheffield Grin

TidyDancer · 25/12/2020 10:43

Oh yes I have this where I am. I live in a town in the south east which has four distinct housing areas as well as the town centre. One area in particular thinks it is better than the rest and tries to rebrand itself as an independent village. It's a bloody housing estate. Grin Nothing wrong with it, but it's no different than any of the other areas, it just thinks it is!

Bitcherama · 25/12/2020 10:44

People who live in Comiston or Fairmilehead instead of Oxgangs.

TeaAndHobnob · 25/12/2020 10:49

Edgbaston is huge, correct. It incorporates areas formerly known as Ladywood and Balsall Heath as well.

Well you have the added fun of parliamentary boundaries too.

back in Harrow, our MP was Harrow West - even though you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who'd admit to living in "West Harrow". Even though there's a tube station there.

hansgrueber · 25/12/2020 10:54

When the local bounderies were reorganised back in the 70s a lot of posh places found themselves legally in Salford, the residents of Worsley, Roe Green amd a few other places were not at all pleased! Estate agents will tell you how important an address is, viewers of property websites will always want to avoid certain areas

BooFuckingHoo2 · 25/12/2020 10:55

I was seeing a guy who lived TEN MILES from the area he claimed to 😂. There was nothing wrong with the place he lived, I think he just wanted to claim he lived in X nice town. Baffling as he could have afforded a smaller house in X town if he really wanted to live there Confused.

Same guy told me he originated from “East Yorkshire”, I subsequently found out he was born and raised in Hull Grin

RaymondSpectacles · 25/12/2020 10:55

I used to work in Cricklewood. It's not posh Grin quick 5 minute hop on the C11 and you're in West Hampstead though.

Where I live, people call themselves Cotswold Mummies Envy not me, I hasten to add, we aren't in the Cotswolds!!

Our address and landline number cover lots of different places, none anywhere near where we live, our postcode is in a different county.
ShakinScarecrow · 25/12/2020 10:57

@EssentialHummus

Yup. I live in a bit of New Cross that 5,000 people have decided is its own separate enclave.
Yes! I knew where you meant straightaway.Grin I wonder how it would go down on the local Facebook page if it was suggested they all live in plain old New Cross?Shock
LeggyLinda · 25/12/2020 10:59

I know someone in Windsor. I address their Christmas card to Lower Slough just to annoy them (in a jokey way)

PickAChew · 25/12/2020 11:00

There is not even anything posh about most of East Yorkshire :o

hansgrueber · 25/12/2020 11:01

@thedevilinablackdress

Meh. It's low on the scale of things that annoy me. Mildly amusing on occasion. And definitely fueled by estate agents.
Actually I think that estate agents are only responding to their clients' wishes.
BogRollBOGOF · 25/12/2020 11:03

The estate agents rename the local woods.

The nearby area has been around since the Doomsday Book, but is most known for its post-war council estate sprawl. A large area has been "Council-estate Common" and "Council estate Woods" for centuries.
Then my slightly aspiringly naice-ish area was built in this zone, given a nice name like Hollywood, and the estate agents now call "Council esrate Woods" by the inaccurate, and clunky "Hollywood Woods"

Added to that some incomers don't realise that they've been had by the estate agents and think Council estate Woods and Hollywood Woods are two seperate places.

CaMePlaitPas · 25/12/2020 11:03

This is probably outing - I don't care.

I used to know someone who would insist they lived in Winchmore Hill and not Enfield. But Winchmore Hill is IN Enfield albeit the nice part. Daft though.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 25/12/2020 11:04

I don’t know anything about those 2 areas so don’t know what’s so bad about them. However I do agree from my experience. People in my area say they live in X when the post code clearly says they live In Y (worse area) We genuinely are on the border as the border shifted about 20 years ago weirdly but just say Y as we don’t give a 💩💩

JLLproblem · 25/12/2020 11:07

LOL @ Whitechapel Village 😂

BreakfastOfWaffles · 25/12/2020 11:10

Years ago I bought a flat in Acton. The estate agent insisted on calling it "North Chiswick" 😂 😂

Bagelsandbrie · 25/12/2020 11:10

My step mother (who I can’t stand) is dreadful for this. She lives in New Addington in Croydon which - if anyone knows the area- is rough as shit. (I come from the area myself so feel justified saying that!) and she insists all post is addressed to her at “Addington Village” which I’m not even sure exists anymore or ever did and certainly isn’t her listed address! Grin

foxychox · 25/12/2020 11:10

In Essex, Debden = Upper Loughton 🤣🤣🤣🤣

RhodaDendron · 25/12/2020 11:14

@EssentialHummus @Bear65 another Telegraph Hiller! It’s so weird! Where actually are we?
Sometimes I lay claims to living in Nouveau Croix...

toria658 · 25/12/2020 11:14

Those who claim to live in St Albans but live in Sandridge.

Rosehip10 · 25/12/2020 11:17

@pickachew people from Beverly would gasp at that Xmas Wink
