To be annoyed by people who claim they live in a different area due to snobbery reasons?

Why do people do this? Are they so insecure they have to pretend they are somewhere else?

I know much of this rubbish comes from estate agents, but some people seem to take it to heart......

Two classic examples from people I know.....

1.) "I live in North West Hampstead" (They live in Cricklewood)

2.) "I'm on Farnham Borders" (They live in Aldershot)

Ridiculous.

Postcodes are a whole other ball game aren't they! I have friends variously narked by:
Henley on Thames - Reading postcode
Marlow - Slough postcode
Leamington Spa - Coventry postcode

@lulad

Bromley is in Kent. With a Kent postcode. & if you wrote a letter you'd address it 'Bromley, Kent'. Nothing at all you say changes that.

Ok Trump! seriously just google & stop embarrassing yourself.

Bromley, Kent, is 'Bromley, London Borough'. It is in Greater London. You don't have to write 'Kent' on an envelope, just Bromley and the postcode. I live on the edge of Bromley but not in it, it starts a few houses up the road to me. I have an urban London post code and proud of it! Not forgetting that I would have to pay at least another £100,000 for a house my size (if I was lucky), if I wanted to live a few paces up the hill.

Why on Earth do you think that Farnham (anonymous commuter town that people confuse with Farnborough if they’ve heard of it at all) is better known than the home of the British Army?

Why on Earth do you think that people confuse Farnborough in Hampshire with Farnham in Surrey? They are totally unrelated. Just like Farnham has nothing to do with Fareham, also in Hampshire.

I’ve actually never known anyone refer to Aldershot as anything other than Aldershit and with good reason. Sandhurt or even Longmoor are better known for the army.

I wonder where “Brockley village” is....Maybe the bit behind the station with The Barge (weatherspoons ) and the bookies?

It's London, SE4, not far from Forest Hill and Catford. I was brought up not far from there, it was always pleasant but is much nicer now if Location x3 is anything to go by.

I lived in Slough for a bit after uni and my mum would (jokingly) tell people I lived in “upper Windsor”.

MarieVanGoethem · 03/01/2021 08:24

@jessstan1 I’m assuming the point @Lndnmummy was making is that Brockley hasn’t been a village since the C19; & there’s no tradition, unlike with Blackheath, of referring to it as such. Indeed Brockley was a wee hamlet, not a village: can’t gentrifying twits [& their enabling Estate Agents Hmm ] get anything right? Drat it all:
May the eponymous badger(s) of Broca return to punish the feckers! *

Ideally with wee Viking swords & axes so they can sort Lewisham more generally. Or possibly we could do heavily armed ginger cats for the Borough as a whole. Actual Vikings would clearly be dangerous & irresponsible behaviour. I know really it should be cows, but that’s a vastly less cute mental image. And they don’t do well with stairs. And I don’t know anything about Viking cows, other than that presumably Jerseys & Highlands would be out, due to the horns thing. *

**There is a small possibility I am in need of more sleep Hmm

I live in a military town with lots of surrounding Cotswold villages

A while ago an estate was built on the outside of our town that used the name of the nearest village with park on the end

The residents for years tried to get themselves changed to Snob Park, and it's always referred to as Snob Park not the town it's actually in

Even when trying to get into the school ( the nearest to me) the asked if I lived 'on the Park'

It's a frigging crammed in housing estate

Lndnmummy · 03/01/2021 12:18

@MarieVanGoethem yep- that’s exactly what I meant!Grin

Here's a video explaining this:

‘Hove actually’ is such a thing that it’s even on cushions! (Brighton/Hove)

@BeakyWinder

My area is terrible for this. The main town is a permanent fixture in the top 5 worst place to live, but surrounded by several naice villages. Nobody will admit to being associated with crap town. We recently moved to justtt over the invisible border (literally the other side of a mini roundabout from naice village) to upgrade our house massively and DPs mum said "lovely house but it's just such a shame where it is) nutter.
crawley ?? lol
