To be annoyed by people who claim they live in a different area due to snobbery reasons?

Why do people do this? Are they so insecure they have to pretend they are somewhere else?

I know much of this rubbish comes from estate agents, but some people seem to take it to heart......

Two classic examples from people I know.....

1.) "I live in North West Hampstead" (They live in Cricklewood)

2.) "I'm on Farnham Borders" (They live in Aldershot)

Ridiculous.

@BreakfastOfWaffles

Years ago I bought a flat in Acton. The estate agent insisted on calling it "North Chiswick" 😂 😂
Lol I love this one. I've had an estate agent say this to me, too 😂
PandemicPalava · 29/12/2020 20:47

My favourite is Center Parcs 'Woburn Forest.' Erm, it's not in Woburn where the safari park and abbey are, it's in a town called Flitwick. Not quite as posh ay CP?!

TreacleHart · 29/12/2020 20:50

I have a friend that tells people she lives in the outskirts of xxx village . When her postcode puts her in the same place as me , an ordinary town 😂😂

Pugdogmom · 29/12/2020 22:49

This is very outing but I don't care. My ex H told me he came from the East Riding of Yorkshire (Hull..lol). After we split and years later when I had to speak to him about something, he was trying to boast that his gf's Dad had built her house and it was on it's own land on a farm.😂. Turned out it's on the edge of the roughest estates in Swansea.
I really couldn't care where people live, but I detest pretentious twats.

Bunbunbunny · 29/12/2020 22:52

I had someone come round to measure up blinds and she told me how lucky I was not to have the same postcode as the next town that we boarder and was quite snobby about the place. I was pissed off as my aunt lived in the next town and there is nothing wrong with it! Bought curtains elsewhere

BigusBumus · 29/12/2020 23:10

I once found myself saying I lived in Crouch End when I actually lived in Hornsey/The Ladder. I fancied the guy and it worked. 😁 Until he woke up the next morning and had to go get the tube. Blush

Defenbaker · 29/12/2020 23:17

YANBU to be annoyed by people who are desperate to appear better/richer than they are. It's pathetic, I just laugh at them.

MarthasGinYard · 29/12/2020 23:24

These would be the same folk who buy new builds and say 'we're moving up from the 'shellbourne' to the 5 bed 'Beechbrook' Grin

nancy75 · 29/12/2020 23:30

For my fellow SE Londoners, a woman I know (who thinks she’s much cooler than she is) recently told me she’s moving to ‘the Quays’ Where is that I asked? Bordering Greenwich apparently.
Strange I thought, having lived in SE London my whole life, that I’ve never heard of ‘The Quays’
Upon further questioning it turns out that ‘The Quays’ is actually Surrey Quays (or more correctly Surrey Docks - where I grew up!!)
I’m told it’s got a lovely village feel - actually it’s just got a shit shopping centre & a big Tesco’s!

SendHelp30 · 30/12/2020 00:00

Ex-Colleague of mine lived in Jordanthorpe but always claimed it was Dronfield 😂😂

SendHelp30 · 30/12/2020 00:05

@Ginfordinner I’m not far from you! People are very judgey. Especially school mums! My son will be going to Woolley wood in September and my MIL insists on telling people he’s going to school in Grenoside. It’s not, it’s in parson cross. Who cares 😂

user1473878824 · 30/12/2020 00:11

My favourite, that I always thought was just a joke until I heard it out, live in the wild: “I live in South Chelsea.”

Battersea. That’ll be Battersea.

Sweetpea84 · 30/12/2020 00:15

@onemouseplace

It amuses me no end that a big chunk of Streatham markets itself as ‘Balham Borders’.
Where? Who? I’m in Streatham and never heard of Balham boarders? We are next to Balham.
HarrietSchulenberg · 30/12/2020 00:31

These are making me laugh. When I lived in Acton I used to tell people that I lived in West Chiswick or East Ealing for a laugh, then wait to see if they worked it out. Sometimes they did.

MarieVanGoethem · 30/12/2020 00:32

@LadyEloise
I think we should all forget about D4 Wink As for Cork, maybe it’s just the infinite superiority to Kerry all distilled in the city that gives that impression/illusion? Halo (Yes, yes I am at a safe distance for that sort of comment Grin ) Though more seriously, I think I read something somewhere about it, maybe linked to the D6W thing & general Having Of Postcode-Related Notions...

@nancy75
That’s hilarious. I just startled my poor cats by actually giggling out loud. I know they’ve put up a load of fancy-expensive new developments round there over the last few years, but it no more feels like a village than Rotherhithe or Woolwich does. Is “The Quays” the name of whatever awful development it is she’s moving into? I don’t remember the Docklands as working docks - just the aftermath of the shutdown - but even with Belfast now barely working itself there’s something almost painful about the contrast when you fly from London City to Belfast City & see the two. (Though doing that seems a distant dream just now of course... I don’t even get to spend time by the Thames or the tributary that winds round the top & bottom of my road just now... )

PetertheWalrus · 30/12/2020 01:21

A mate accused me of this when we had our first house. Had to get a map with the borough boundaries on it to show him I was right (by 200 metres).

PetertheWalrus · 30/12/2020 01:32

I grew up in an area of South London called Upper Norwood. Today, nobody's ever heard of it. Over the years it seems to have been re-named "Crystal Palace" or "Gipsy Hill" after the railway stations. Maybe Upper Norwood wasn't posh/trendy enough?

Wolfff · 30/12/2020 02:19

I live in an area which was originally known as Notting Hill - basically the north slopes of the hill and north up Ladbroke Grove. This was the case up to the 60s. The station was originally called Notting Hill. However the area is generally now called North Kensington.

Notting Hill has shifted towards Notting Hill Gate - previously Bayswater.

I also experienced the negative connotations of the Notting Hill name. I was born in the 60s when it was notoriously rough with slums. I think that may be when using 'North Kensington' became a more popular alternative.

Haha. And Hither Green for Catford Wink

Smallgoon · 30/12/2020 02:41

@Greenandcabbagelooking

I changed where I lived based on who I was talking to and the impression I wanted to give.

"I live in Dulwich" - I am a proper adult living in a calm family area.
"I live in Crystal Palace" - I am a young person in a flatshare
"I live in the weird bit that's not really Dulwich, CP, or even Gipsy Hill" - the truth.

Sydenham?
Smallgoon · 30/12/2020 02:53

@Gogreengoblin

Hyacinth Bouquet!! Flowers I was bought up to be a snob and to lie about such things due to my mother's superiority complex. I've had to work hard to undo it.
Oh hello Mrs Bucket 😃
Smallgoon · 30/12/2020 03:12

I tell people I live in Forest Hill (which is true) and the response is "oh, in East London??" (confusing it with Forest Gate...) at which point I respond "no, it's SE - next to Dulwich" 😂

Weird that people have heard of Forest Gate but not Forest Hill, despite neither having an underground stn.

HollaHolla · 30/12/2020 03:22

My friend moved to Maryhill in Glasgow. Her mother still tries to insist that it’s North Kelvinside. (It’s not)
