Just wondering. I always have done before, but this year I haven't. I hope this isn't going to lead to some sort of sprout-related disaster...

Blimey. What tine are you eating? 9:30?

Spaceman1 · 25/12/2020 08:42

I always cross my sprouts to stop the stem being too hard.

laudemio · 25/12/2020 08:43

Yes I do otherwise the stalks are hard, or if you wait till they are cooked the main bit goes mushy

CharityEscapeGoat · 25/12/2020 08:43

I do. Can't hurt. I sit & watch DD playing with her new toys, & do them in a bowl on my kap. Preferably with a glass of Christmas sherry!

CharityEscapeGoat · 25/12/2020 08:45

Bloody hell. Lap. Lap! I already corrected it once & it changed back!

DoyouthinkIcare · 25/12/2020 08:45

This may be controversial but I do one cut. Too lazy for a cross!!!

Hollybutnoivy · 25/12/2020 08:46

My brother used to put a cross on one so we could play sprout lottery!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/12/2020 09:02

I can’t be arsed. They’re enough of a faff to prepare as it is!

Ginfordinner · 25/12/2020 09:06

I don't. I don't see the need TBH.

quarentini · 25/12/2020 09:08

Shredded and fried with bacon and chestnut is the way forward

SpudsandGravy · 25/12/2020 09:15

Oh bleep! Maybe I'd better go back and cross them :)

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/12/2020 09:19

I used to do this but sprouts are smaller and more tender these days so I don't think it's necessary any more. Plus we tend not to eat them boiled to a pulp nowadays.

MistleTOEboughski · 25/12/2020 09:19

What you haven't got the sprouts on yet? I've had them on since St Swithens day or they will be like bullets.

MrsMarrio · 25/12/2020 09:23

Watched a thing on this years ago....doesn't make the slight bit of difference and I've never done it.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/12/2020 09:24

We do, they cook more evenly. Mine have been simmering since 7.18, am hoping they’ll be done by 2pm.

Skipsurvey · 25/12/2020 09:24

i used to but now just cut off the bottoms.

magicstar1 · 25/12/2020 09:27

I’ve just realised I’ve been cutting the crosses into the wrong end for years!

Glad I read this thread now lol.

Dementedswan · 25/12/2020 09:32

I don't, I just trim mine.

helloxhristmas · 25/12/2020 09:34

If they're big I chop the bottoms off

thismeansnothing · 25/12/2020 09:38

Yup. It's what baby Jesus would have wanted.

FourEyesGood · 25/12/2020 09:39

Yes! Tradition, innit?

Seeline · 25/12/2020 09:41

@magicstar1. 😂😂

I always put crosses in. Especially this year - the sprouts are huge. I prepped mine yesterday.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 25/12/2020 09:43

And the Lord said "thou shall cut a cross in your sprouts and this shall please me" and so it passed.
Yes, yes I do. I have no idea why though Grin

OwlBasket · 25/12/2020 09:43

There’s no need to cut crosses in Brussels, people used to believe it let the devil out of them but actually it just makes them soggy. Honestly. I’ll try and find a link...

emmathedilemma · 25/12/2020 09:45

I do, unless they're small ones in which case I'd just do one cut.
