Just wondering. I always have done before, but this year I haven't. I hope this isn't going to lead to some sort of sprout-related disaster...

I cut mine in half, microwave for 1 min and then fry them with onion and bacon.

JamesAnderson · 25/12/2020 09:50

@quarentini

Shredded and fried with bacon and chestnut is the way forward
Definitely this
TurquoiseDragon · 25/12/2020 09:53

I buy frozen sprouts, no need for cutting crosses.

Pukkatea · 25/12/2020 10:03

No, I cut the bottom off then cut them in half and roast them til crispy.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/12/2020 10:07

There’s no need to cut crosses in Brussels, people used to believe it let the devil out of them but actually it just makes them soggy.

An understandable idea, given the taste but it doesn't help.

I start my sprout prep a year before eating, when I chuck them straight in the compost and use the results to grow carrots. Sprouts taste delicious when broken into carbon atoms and rebounded inside a nice vegetable.

ImNotMeImSomeoneElse · 25/12/2020 10:09

I used to. Then one year couldn't be arsed.

The were exactly the same. Truly, life is too short to cross a sprout!

Baconking · 25/12/2020 10:11

I usually do but this year Sainsbury's ran out of fresh sprouts on the day I did my food shop so I had to get the last bag of frozen.
Hoping they won't be mushy...

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 25/12/2020 10:14

Haven't done it in years. DP does sometimes. Seems to make zero difference.

MrsDThomas · 25/12/2020 10:15

Never have. Absolutely no need.

FangsForTheMemory · 25/12/2020 10:17

It’s a superstition thing because they’re from hell.

Sn0tnose · 25/12/2020 11:10

Gordon Ramsey doesn’t cross his, so I’m sure they would be fine. But you know what happens when we start messing with things like this? Things start going to hell in a handcart, that’s what happens!

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid · 25/12/2020 11:16

To let Jesus in?

Yukay · 25/12/2020 11:18

I didn't cross mine, still tasted good!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2020 11:19

Yep, I know they don't need it but its tradition, I used to do it with my Mum, then Dd did it with me.

ridl14 · 25/12/2020 11:52

I wouldn't - it makes them soggy. First result that comes up when you Google it. Although whatever your family is used to will taste right for you!

LoseLooseLucy · 25/12/2020 11:53

I’ve put them in mine, even though I know they’re not necessary 😳

SpudsandGravy · 25/12/2020 14:21

Thanks for all the sprouts thoughts, all :) I didn't cross them in the end but I cooked them in the Instant Pot and they sat on keep warm until they were just like little melt-in-the-mouth farts. Fortunately that's just how we like them :)

Acrasia · 25/12/2020 14:37

Nope, I coat in a little oil and sprinkle some salt over before roasting in the oven so the outside leaves are crispy and the inside is soft and lovely. A revelation 😋

Lunaballoon · 25/12/2020 14:43

I’ve never cut crosses for religious or hard stem reasons.
Life’s too short and they’ve always turned out fine and besides, I’d rather spend time on stuff that actually matters like the roast potatoes and gravy!

Serin · 25/12/2020 15:06

Sprout lottery is just genius!! 🤩 I have just put a cross in one .

PickAChew · 25/12/2020 15:09

I just cut them in half, unless they're tiny.

OublietteBravo · 25/12/2020 15:10

Yes. Or rather today DS (14) did - it’s time he started learning how to cook Christmas Dinner. I wouldn’t want to send him out into the world untrained!

QuantumJump · 25/12/2020 15:14

No I don't bother. They always taste fine!

ImRealHonest · 25/12/2020 15:15

I do. I thought it was the Law.

Don’t know why though. But I do it, just to be safe
