To be annoyed that DP won’t let me have the electric blanket on?

He says we don’t need it on because the storage heater is on and that I don’t pay the electricity so I don’t know how much it costs. I thought they were quite cheap to run. I get cold easily and he said I should put more clothes on instead of going to bed with next to nothing on. AIBU?

Does he know how cheap it is? Perhaps you could phrase it to him that he is prioritising a few pence per night over your comfort? He might see it differently, then.

He has a point about paying for heat when you've not put any clothes on, but presumably if you felt comfortable in pjs you'd put them on? So what he's offering you is the choice of uncomfortable or cold.

DDiva · 24/12/2020 10:45

Honestly a dual control blanket is the way to go. I put mine on 3times last night altho that was also to help my muscle ache .....

billy1966 · 24/12/2020 10:51

I never wear anything in bed. Haven't since I was about 12.
Pjs make me feel I'm being strangled during the night.
Husband doesn't want an electric blanket.
I have a single one on my side of the bed.

I would really miss it.
When you don't wear anything in bed, getting into a cold bed is awful.

It really uses next to nothing.
It would piss me off him saying no.
Surely he wants you to be comfortable.
Cbeck out how much it costs an hour to run and make a point of handing him the money every night.🙄

Shinylikeglass · 24/12/2020 11:03

I didn't realise electric blankets are still a thing.

We used to have them at my grandparents' where the only heating was the fire in the living room and stove in the kitchen but even then they were only used to warm the bed before you got in, always turned off before you went to bed because of the fire risk.

Now, in a basically warm house, even though I don't have the heating on in the bedroom, I can't see any need at all and I'd certainly support suitable clothes for the season ahead of putting any kind of heating on.

What's the environmental cost of all these unnecessary electric blankets, even if the individual cost per household is small?

roses2 · 24/12/2020 11:21

To be honest I don’t really wear anything to bed ....... he thinks it is unnecessarily costing more on a prepaid top up card.

Now you've added this massive drip feed you are being highly unreasonable. It's winter and he's on a pre pay meter. Put some clothes on and stop whinging.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/12/2020 11:25

I don't blame him. However not because of how much they cost to run.
YouTube George and Betty's electric blanket.

DrizzleandDamp · 24/12/2020 11:25

I suspect that it isn’t actually the electricity then!!

I hate electric blankets always have, ask him what the REAL reason is!

Also if it’s his house do you rock up carrying your electric blanket? 😂😂

Changi · 24/12/2020 11:26

My conscience is clear. We are on a 100% renewable electricity tariff.

gamerchick · 24/12/2020 11:28

Wear something to bed OP. It's like sitting around in a teeshirt and shorts then wanting the heating full blast all day, the way you're approaching it.

He is right under these circumstances, get yourself a onesie with a flap.

I don't like sleeping in pjs either - hideous choking things. However, if I'm cold in winter I'll pj up before I consider turning heat on. I've got some fantastic thin but warm pjs. It's also amazing what a pair of socks can do to get you toasty - I've got icicle feet and if they're cold, can't get to sleep.

I love winter as I can get rid of the top sheet ie #2 strangling hazard when trying to sleep. Have to have it in summer but I love the turn of season when I can get back under the doona and ditch the sheet. I find it much warmer sleeping straight under the feathers. If blankets are needed, put them on top of the feather doona, not under, as they'll trap the heat in the feathers.

Dyrne · 24/12/2020 11:37

@Shinylikeglass we use electric blankets precisely because it means we are more energy efficient - we don’t have to heat the bedroom nearly as much when we know we can just nip up 10 mins before bedtime, turn on the blanket, then have it nice and toasty for getting into - don’t need to warm the entire room when you’re going straight to bed.

Most blankets have a timer as well so they’re not on all night. Once you’re in and warmed up the duvet keeps the heat in all night.

CorianderQueen · 24/12/2020 11:47

If you're cold you're cold. Chuck £5 at him and tell him to do one

CorianderQueen · 24/12/2020 11:48

Also I sleep naked and can not sleep in clothes so I use a hot water bottle

VinylDetective · 24/12/2020 12:31

They’re not unnecessary and the environmental cost is bugger all, about the same as boiling a kettle.

SimplyRadishing · 24/12/2020 12:37

A blanket for 30 mins twice a week costs cock all.

Give him £20 and turn the blanket on.

Emeraldshamrock · 24/12/2020 12:47

The irritation probably comes from his parents. I often give out to DD who lives in shorts and a T-shirt expecting the heating on for the day, my DM insisted on adding proper layers.

DPotter · 24/12/2020 12:50

Separate duvets are the way to go.

I sleep so much better now - I have a 13 tog in winter and a 7tog for the summer. Currently DP's duvet is a 3tog so basically a sheet - it's winter, it's cold.
And yes I do wear nice warm pyjamas too

LolaSmiles · 24/12/2020 14:18

We are kindred spirits on this.
