To send the resignation email and tell her to F off?

I've name changed for this, just in case (I'm a scaredy cat!)

My manager is fucking ridiculous, micro managing the shit out of the whole team. It's constant streams of emails, texts and phone calls checking where you are, what you're working on, why haven't you finished, why didn't you do this?

It's seriously degrading now, it's like she has no trust in anyone to just do their job!

It's a million times worse since lockdown and people working from home. I haven't been allowed to work from home, apparently I'm not good working at home so have been in the office right the way through!

The whole team are completely on the floor, exhausted and morale is extremely low.

Anyway, I have had to work from home today as I'm isolating and the constant emails questioning what I'm working on have just caused me to snap!

I have drafted a letter of resignation, I haven't sent it but was awfully close to sending. Clearly I wouldn't tell her to fuck off but I've just had enough, I've never slacked off on work or given her a reason to distrust me.

Is it just me though or are all managers this way? Seems I always end up with control freaks! Please tell me AINBU!

Congratulations and it was nice to read of the good news for you.

TinyCake · 05/02/2021 08:05

I had a manager like this, people had words but there was no change. I had to leave. Just make sure you line something else up first if you can.

TinyCake · 05/02/2021 08:07

Sorry!!

Congratulations on the new job!

Applesandpears23 · 05/02/2021 08:11

Congratulations! Getting a new job and saying good bye to a bad boss is such a good feeling.

Afishcalledwonderful · 05/02/2021 08:11

I had a manager like this too! Forever breathing down my neck and also got miffed if the team didn't join her for lunch in the staff canteen every day! It was stifling. I left and got a much better job and felt like a grown up again 😂 I was 36 at the time! Bloody well done for going out there and getting yourself a new job. I bet that felt good when you handed in your resignation.

MysteriousMonkey · 05/02/2021 08:52

YANBU this sounds hideous! I have no more advice than what's been given but just wanted to say I hope you find something better soon. My DH has a manager like this and it is making him so miserable.

BosleyCharliesAngel · 05/02/2021 09:06

@NoProblem123

1 - Don’t send any resignation yet 2 - Line up another job ASAP. 3 - Send professional resignation to HR 4 - Spend your notice period sending her emails every 15 minutes with questions that need answers before you can proceed. 5 - Ensure chaos by the time you leave.

I wouldn’t bother fighting for wfh - if they haven’t allowed it by now they’re never going to.
HR are not there for workers EVER so don’t bother with them either.
Union are useful in some circumstances, but this sounds rubbish and if you’ve got other options you should leave.
Bad Managers and crappy work cultures do not deserve good workers.

Brilliant news @Needhelpnottodoit!

Now you need to implement the "NoProblem123" plan as outlined above. It'll drive her crazy :D

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/02/2021 09:28

Great news.

Chickychickydodah · 05/02/2021 09:45

Can you copy all the harassment and pettiness and get a union involved if Hr won’t do anything .

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 05/02/2021 09:49

Well done! I read this thread back in December, pleased to hear you've got a better job.

Santaiscovidfree · 05/02/2021 09:49

Send her a glitter bomb +card for being a great manager!

BathTangle · 05/02/2021 09:55

So pleased to read your update! That feeling of being appreciated for your abilities and trusted to just get on with it is brilliant.... I am nearly 3 years on from leaving my micro managing boss and I am just so much happier: got a promotion and pay rise in that time as well. Wholesome revenge...

IEat · 05/02/2021 09:58

Oh to be checked up on. My manager hasn’t said ANYTHING to any of us lowly workers for weeks! Would be nice to get how are you message. But nope

ElectraBlue · 05/02/2021 10:03

I would play the game rather than resign angrily.

Start looking for a new role right now. Take some sick leave and use it to job hunt. Then resign but stay professional.

The only other option you might have is that if everyone in the team has the same issue you might try to get jointly approach your manager's manager and make a complaint about the fact that their behaviour is out of order and actually prevent you all from doing your job under already difficult circumstances.

icelollycraving · 05/02/2021 10:16

This reminds me of a very short lived job I had. In an industry I knew well but were notorious being shocking employers but paid way above the average for the role.
I lasted 6 weeks and hated every minute of every day. I took a week sick which showed me just how unhappy I was. I’d rarely been off sick with my previous employer in 12 years. I braced myself to return, walked into the first meeting and saw all the pressure and anxiety of the team and knew I just couldn’t do it. I felt really relieved to walk out after telling my boss that I realised that I wasn’t the right fit for the job and it wasn’t right for me.
I have never told dh that I walked. He still thinks I got the sack 8 years later!
All I’d say is, it took me a year to secure another job in an industry I was experienced in, that had a reasonable amount of work available. That affected my confidence too.
Look for another job, let her micro manage or push back with constant streams of detail on what you’re doing to pre empt it. Once you’ve resigned, you will feel so much better. Good luck!

billy1966 · 05/02/2021 11:02

Well done OP, super news.

I wouldn't entertain her during your notice period.

Enjoy!
👍

icelollycraving · 05/02/2021 11:06

God I’m such a knob, hadn’t seen your update. Congrats on the new job!! Flowers

CheddarGorgeous · 05/02/2021 11:08

Yay! Well done you! Thanks

ThaimForTea · 05/02/2021 15:47

Congrats OP! I bloody LOVED handing in my notice. I gave it in to my supervisor who was lovely but it was the manager up from her that I hated and made all our lives hell. Manager from hell never spoke to me after that. Not once! It was bliss Grin

crosstalk · 05/02/2021 17:17

Well done OP. But for the sake of your fellow workers can you fire a parting shot to HR or whomever? Do you feel a tad sorry for the line manager? she's clearly not coping, not suitable and could be under pressure from above.
