Any of your neighbours made a dash for it?

As a Londoner I enjoy the peace that Christmas brings to my local area (SW), the ability to park outside your house, etc!
I thought it would be different this year but clearly not, hardly any cars parked & at least 6 of my neighbours have gone (no privacy in terraces with extensions etc).
Just my area?

I think the press conference was too late for lots of people. Many had left already and lots made a dash on Saturday . Have lots of friends who are very quiet on social media now and WhatsApp groups so assume they have legged it. Still lots more people than normal here though .

CakeRequired · 22/12/2020 10:39

We've had lots turn up up here (highlands). Going to be fun watching them try to get back home now. Shouldn't have bloody come here in the first place so no sympathy.

jillypill · 22/12/2020 10:40

Tbf there are a lot of house shares near me so I don't blame those wanting to go to family.

Where have they gone do they all have second homes?

jillypill · 22/12/2020 10:41

Knowing my actual neighbours it's family.
We usually do the same but my mum is around the corner.

Quite a few people here in the tourist town where I live, openly boasting about having come from tier 4. No wonder the sodding virus is spreading. Selfish bastards.

JanewaysBun · 22/12/2020 10:46

Also SW and seems pretty normal to me, still busy but roads are less quiet as presume people staying in

CollateralDamage1 · 22/12/2020 10:47

I think the whole country is going to be tier 4 tonight.

At least two. Really disappointed in them - plus they didn't ask me to put the bins out for them as they normally would, so I think they've guessed where I stand.

ftm202020 · 22/12/2020 10:55

We are in Kent! My single friend got on Tinder and found a man in tier 2 to bubble up with and off she went.

GreekOddess · 22/12/2020 10:55

I can understand why single people might be breaking the rules to go and visit family. Especially as a lot of people are probably bored stiff with their own company and have been working from home for 9 months. I can't judge people in those circumstances.

RaininSummer · 22/12/2020 10:56

My daughter had already arrived before the announcement (technically still a student so not rule breaking anyway). She had a test before leaving London. I am more worried about her going back tbh.

PTW1234 · 22/12/2020 10:58

I think a lot of people came to their second homes earlier this year also, e.g not risking last minute changes.

I live in an “affluent” superb of a large city, and our case rate for our postcode has risen faster than anywhere else in the local authority. Plenty of big usually empty second homes around here and local traffic has increased

HitthatroadJack · 22/12/2020 11:05

It went both ways - some people rushed, I know quite a few who were not planning on leaving until mid-week

and some cars have appeared as family is visiting here.

If the royals give the example and made sure they run out of London - lockdown or not - why wouldn't normal people do the same?

PilatesPeach · 22/12/2020 11:14

Single people can form a bubble so not breaking rules if visiting a household if that is the other part of their bubble obviously can only have one. I'm tier 4, my bubble also single is tier 4 too but a different town & I'm allowed to visit or stay over we are treated as one household.

CorianderQueen · 22/12/2020 11:14

No, don't know anyone who's going to family

JorisBonson · 22/12/2020 11:15

SE London here and my road has never been busier. Lots of new cars parked up (I'm turning into fucking Mrs Bucket through boredom).

You see, that sounds really scary to me! (But I'm an old codger. Used to use a phone box to phone parents when away from home. Nothing as advanced as t'internet when I was single.)
Nowaynothappening · 22/12/2020 11:16

Most of my Mother’s street have gone, she said it’s like a ghost town.

onemouseplace · 22/12/2020 11:17

I think lots of people went before we went into Tier 4 - my neighbours over the road were packing up their car on Saturday morning.

CorianderQueen · 22/12/2020 11:17

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom nope, I'm 25 and agree that sounds terribly dangerous

RainMoon · 22/12/2020 11:17

If you have a big detached house in the country and live in a small flat in London when you’re there. If everywhere’s closed and no ones go out and you’re not interacting I don’t see the issue. The royals can do it.
But if you’re going to the pub etc in your new place that is bad. But moving and spending 2 weeks alone as a family unit? Are the people complaining the ones who are getting to walk on the beach rather than not leave a cramped flat?

ThelmaNotLouise · 22/12/2020 11:18

Nope, everyone's still here in my street as usual, as are all our friends locally. Despite what the media has made you think, not all Londoners high-tailed it out of the capital the minute Boris made his announcement on Saturday. Exodus my arse.

Er, wow! That's insane.
