Any of your neighbours made a dash for it?

As a Londoner I enjoy the peace that Christmas brings to my local area (SW), the ability to park outside your house, etc!
I thought it would be different this year but clearly not, hardly any cars parked & at least 6 of my neighbours have gone (no privacy in terraces with extensions etc).
Just my area?

Our next door neighbours have gone one better and gone from here (T2) to stay with their adult son for the previously allocated 5 days. He's just outside of central London (T4) yet they've still gone ahead. It seems utterly mad to me.
@problembottom please don't out him, report to the police, as I assume you know the address he left. Especially if he is an MP.
Oh for heavens sake why because he is an MP, that is being politicist. If someone turns up anywhere best just to avoid them. It is a virus that kills way less than 1% of the population.

supportivemyarse · 22/12/2020 14:28

@Watermelon888 yep NW.

I'll virtue signal this neighbour in the arse with my boot next time I see them.

ShatnersWig · 22/12/2020 14:30

I'm a rare beast. I actively chose to leave tier 2 and travel into tier 4 on Saturday afternoon. Packed up my bags and went. I listened to Our Glorious Leader while travelling.

I'm single and work from home. My girlfriend is single and works from home. Aside from shopping, we only really see each other to minimise risk but we live 40 miles apart. She is currently suffering from depression, mainly caused because her dad (her only family) is in a care home and on her window visits throughout the year she had seen him deteriorate hugely due to lack of contact. He has told her several times he wants to die now because he thinks he's never coming out again. He's not well enough to live with her but she took him out as much as she could pre-pandemic and he was very mentally alert, active and enjoyed life.

Originally she was due to come to me for a few days before Christmas then we were going to come back here so she could window visit her dad on Christmas Day. Window visits being all that are allowed.

We expected an outright travel ban and there was no way I would have let her spend Christmas alone as, frankly, she's not in a great way as it is. In the end, travel between tiers for support bubbles wasn't done away with, so I didn't need to rush. But I was potentially going to imprison myself here.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/12/2020 14:31

Don't know a single person that has left London. All my friends and neighbours are still here (plus local supermarkets are still fully stocked. No panic buying here either)

My sister is in tier two else where and has gone to her second home in Cornwall though. Just in case her area is moved up tiers.

Does that count?

ftm202020 · 22/12/2020 14:32

Yes, she is usually this reckless! I wouldn't have done this myself, personally I think it is mad.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/12/2020 14:35

To be honest you are probably safer now in tier 4 than any where else.
There is now limited opportunities for the virus to be spread if people follow the rules in tier 4.
The rest of the country everyone can still mix therefore it is far more likely you will catch the virus.

justasking111 · 22/12/2020 14:35

@ShatnersWig as a fellow trekkie I salute you for putting your girlfriend ahead of tiers. We are all going to be in tier 1,000 before long anyway to enjoy your time together. Live long and prosper.

LadyRoughDiamond · 22/12/2020 14:37

We’re in the middle of the countryside with quite a few second homes in the village - our village shop has reported the cancellation of several food orders because people are staying put and not travelling.

IndecentFeminist · 22/12/2020 14:40

Am on Isle of Wight, the middle of the night ferries have been full the last couple of nights. 🙄

Audreyseyebrows · 22/12/2020 14:43

The roads in Cornwall were unusually busy this morning. Could be Christmas shoppers I guess? (At 6am Grin)

VestaTilley · 22/12/2020 14:44

I’m in SE London and our street is quieter too.

onyourway · 22/12/2020 14:44

I'm amazed the Isle of Wight ferries aren't being policed more heavily?
Especially as Portsmouth is in Tier 4

Are they coming in from Southampton...that isn't Tier 4 ?

What on earth are the ferry companies playing at?

justasking111 · 22/12/2020 14:55

Holyhead has banned ordinary folk but that is to Ireland, Wight is within the UK so why would they ban the ferries?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/12/2020 15:12

Lots of people went as soon as school broke up.

The gov were too late on this one.

orangecinnamon · 22/12/2020 15:14

IoW is Tier 1, just over the water where one of the main ferry terminals is in Tier 4. They should at least be checking who is going over and why. It is a tiny island and the NHS struggles there as it is.

How come they’ve gone already? It’s only 22nd today?
Watermelon888 · 22/12/2020 15:19

@Requinblanc

I think the country would be a better placer right now without the self-righteousness and virtue signalling...
Perhaps our perspectives are different based on our experiences, but working in a hospital and seeing and hearing first hand how it affects some families is very sobering, especially multigenerational ones.

A colleague has recently lost their dm and their dp is critically ill, believe me that makes you see things differently.

IndecentFeminist · 22/12/2020 15:21

They can't stop people 🤷 had the same in the first lockdown. Unless the police want to come and manage it. You don't need to book (unless v busy) so not many details needed, and people travel backwards and forwards for work, deliveries etc so can't stop completely.

Watermelon888 · 22/12/2020 15:23

Do people from highly infected areas not worry that they are carrying it with them to where they are going and potentially could spread it to older relatives though?

Springersrock · 22/12/2020 15:24

@onyourway

There are 3 crossings, only 1 is from Portsmouth, the other 2 are from Tier 2 areas.

Both ferry companies released a statement at the beginning of the first lock down explaining that as they are public transport company it’s not within their remit to police people’s journeys.

People from tier 1 and 2 are still free to travel here.

Wightlink also released their passénger numbers after all the “midnight ferries are full” fuss, and it’s clearly scaremongering

I hate the pitchfork wielding that’s going on down here at the moment.

IndecentFeminist · 22/12/2020 15:28

Red funnel were definitely full (have sources on the inside 😉) but as I pointed out at the time, many of them were probably already coming. It wasn't necessarily a reaction to BoJo.

cyclingmad · 22/12/2020 15:31

I wish my neighbours had gone so I could have had a peaceful Xmas Grin

Popped out to pharmacy for prescription and my local highstreet in SE London was busy lots of people walking about and plenty of cars

Was kind of hoping the number of cars would go back down like it was in March but oh well

Springersrock · 22/12/2020 15:33

Everyone has sources on the inside. This place is full of internet experts

You do know their capacity has been reduced by about 60% so “full” isn’t full?
