Any of your neighbours made a dash for it?

As a Londoner I enjoy the peace that Christmas brings to my local area (SW), the ability to park outside your house, etc!
I thought it would be different this year but clearly not, hardly any cars parked & at least 6 of my neighbours have gone (no privacy in terraces with extensions etc).
Just my area?

No. They were planning to, the bastards. But I know my civic duty. We set up a road block at the entrance to our close and DH was on the roof firing his crossbow at anyone who tried to ram our car.

We did have to send away our neighbours' Christmas deliveries though. But it's not like turkey and booze are essential anyway. They'll thank us when January comes and they don't have to go on a post-Christmas diet. And there's nothing wrong with children playing with pots and pans, what do they need Christmas presents for?

Our turkey is safely in the deep freeze, we have enough pigs in blankets to last for months and we finished our Christmas shopping in July. While you lot have been busy indulging yourselves and doing your non-essential shopping, we've been rigging up anti-aircraft defences on the roof. DH has already taken out a couple of helicopters we think were heading for Cornwall. So don't panic, everyone. No plague rats are leaving London on our watch Wink. We've got it covered.

nosswith · 22/12/2020 12:12

@Meruem I am pleased at the shops in Cornwall that are responding in the way they are. Though alternatively they could get a local policeman to visit for half an hour and issue fines to the non-locals.

PatMustardsMoustache · 22/12/2020 12:12

Live near a very well known popular 2nd home area in Norfolk. The place is absolutely packed. 2nd home owners sending belongings by the courier van load.

No, my neighbours each side are still here and if they did go away, one couple would go to Spain and the other to Israel, neither of which is permissible at the moment. They are usually at home for Christmas though so nothing new there. I'm not going anywhere either.

We are in tier 4 anyway so nobody would want us!

I think it's nice and cosy at home.

CakeRequired · 22/12/2020 12:13

Ditto Norfolk, they're being very generous, sharing their germs with us! It's been like a Summer Friday in Waitrose.

Yep. They have second homes up here so came up to spread the joy. Thanks assholes. I do wonder if they will break the rules again to go home considering we will be in tier 4 from boxing day. Kind of hope they get told to go back to their second home after being stopped by police, given a fine and then lose their jobs because they can't start again after their holiday. Would serve them right, should have stayed in their main home. You don't need to bring an entire family across the uk for Christmas, no need at all. And yet there's loads up here.

@Mistymonday I'm sorry you're going through thatThanks Sone circumstances can't be helped, and I don't think anyone sabe would judge you harshly for staying where you are x

Fink · 22/12/2020 12:19

No one's gone from here. But it's a predominantly Asian, mainly Muslim & Hindu, suburb of London and not that many of the neighbours celebrate Christmas. Some of my extended family are planning on traveling within tier 4 (from one part of London to another, to visit their parents), having tested and now self-isolating until Christmas day. There's asymptomatic lateral flow testing available.

ruby4ever · 22/12/2020 12:19

I left before we went in to tier 4, I didn't know about tier 4 when I left, that evening it was announced. So glad I did. I knew the rules were going to keep changing and had a feeling the 5 day bubble will be non existent coming towards Xmas.

Springersrock · 22/12/2020 12:20

I live in a holiday area and a lot of the holiday lets/2nd homes here are occupied, although not “rammed” as some of the pitchfork wielding locals would have you believe

My friend works for a company who cleans holiday lets and she says they started arriving after school Friday/Saturday morning.

Not all Londoner’s though, far from it, and tiers 1, 2 and 3 are allowed to travel

Backbee · 22/12/2020 12:21

If I was still in my houseshare I would have gone while I had the chance to be honest.

All made a dash to spread the new variant to their families around the country. Lovely.

Full England Lockdown 3 here we come....

minipie · 22/12/2020 12:27

I’m in SW London and all our friends/neighbours are still here as far as I can tell.

KatieB55 · 22/12/2020 12:28

We live in a tourist/second home area & lots arrived before the tier 4 announcement since private schools finished around 11th and people working from home can work anywhere.

NewlyGranny · 22/12/2020 12:32

We're in a Tier 1 touristy spot. Tier 4 family members a 5 - 6 hour drive away are now not coming as planned. Their presents are packed up waiting for the courier. Someone has to keep the rules!

FuzzyPuffling · 22/12/2020 12:36

Tier 1 here. There's been plenty of people from Tier 3 and 4 trying it on. My facebook feed and friendship group are full of hospitality venues turning people away. Postcodes and proof of residency definitely the dish of the day.

AdventureIsWaiting · 22/12/2020 12:37

I know anecdotally of four people (houseshare going back to parents / airbnb in another area) who ran out before the midnight deadline. Additionally there is an airbnb two doors down from us and two separate cars magically appeared over the weekend. I'm pretty pissed off at that tbh, as we are in a rural area and the hospital capacity isn't brilliant. We're in Tier 3 so they shouldn't have even been able to book it.

I have colleagues who are stuck in Tier 4, and I'm now running out of work at home (office/worksite in Tier 4 - I'm a contractor, so this is costing me £), so I get it's shit, but I can't get over the selfishness of people who, knowing 1/3 of people are asymptomatic and knowing the NHS won't cope, have left the area anyway, to spread it round the country as fast as possible. It pisses me off that I'm doing my bit - foregoing paid work in Tier 4 to avoid bringing it out of the area - and seemingly lots of others aren't doing theirs.

orangecinnamon · 22/12/2020 12:41

I'm in a Tier 4 area , MIL 40 mind walk away us too, difference is her coastal village is vaiiirry popular with second home owners especially from SW London. Will be interesting to see if they have come down this year or not.

I'm not sure I blame them if so, after all we escaped down here every Christmas before moving here. But on the other hand local hospital is choc full already.

Local restaurant seems to anticipate lots of visitors. They have opened up a food van on the Quay and will be serving Christmas day.

If you are second homing (where are you second home mumsnetters?) Why not have a look on your the local community Facebook page. Consider giving back something to the community? Lots of different schemes going on at moment, raising money for hot dinners to be delivered and toys for kids in hospital etc.

ceeveebee · 22/12/2020 12:44

No but am in the NW in tier 3, and know of at least 2 families who are hosting their adult children and their families for Christmas, they arrived from London on Saturday night. Regardless of where they have come from It’s illegal to have people in the house in tier 3 anyway (except on Christmas Day) which we have religiously complied with, so I am fuming about it.
