To say we should think of the stranded forigne lorry drivers

To say I hope we (as a country) look after the foreign lorry drivers caught up in disruption. Just heard on the radio lots of forigne lorry drivers are stranded in the UK and face days in their cabs. I just really feel for them. They do I vital job and this must be shit a few days before Christmas

I heard they had set up lorry parks already but I hope they are provided with plenty of food etc. Unfortunately I'm in the North East as otherwise I'd take some stuff myself! I just really feel for them.

Also just to say I used to work in supermarkets and there's absolutely no need to stockpile only 20% of all goods come through France. Wearhoysr will be well stocked. So as long as people don't panic buy there will be more than enough food for all.

Sadly we all know what happened last time and how that advice went down with certain people.

January21 · 21/12/2020 08:17

People are panic buying

Will there still be enough? God help us once payday arrives

gamerchick · 21/12/2020 08:18

I feel sorry for the lorry drivers. Poor buggers.

MillieEpple · 21/12/2020 08:20

I feel so sorry for them .my DH travels with work and has bern stuck abroad before. I hope our services can deliver care packages to them all.

Plussizejumpsuit · 21/12/2020 08:22

Yes. I'm hoping that the local authorities are swiftly dealing with their needs.

justanotherneighinparadise · 21/12/2020 08:24

I have a stable for them.

@justanotherneighinparadise

I have a stable for them.
It might be needed!

I actually did hear something about a British lorry driver being stranded too. So maybe it's not jsut forigne drivers. Either way I really feel shit for them.

Why would it only be foreign drivers?

yellowmaoampinball · 21/12/2020 08:38

Presumably because countries have shut their borders to us so any one travelling back is stuck here. If you were travelling out to France from the UK you can presumably return to your home town rather than end up sat in a lorry park.

Plussizejumpsuit · 21/12/2020 08:44

Well the report I listened to on radio 4 earlier was saying that the British ones could and had just leave and go home to wait it out. Obviously their stock if they ahd any might spoil but that was going to happen anyway with 48 hour delay. Where as the forigne drivers don't live here so can't just go home and wait it out. Does that make sense for you?

Yup, think also of all the merchant crewmen that have been unable to be repatriated for months now.

Bluesername · 21/12/2020 08:48

I have a stable for them.

If you see any of them on a donkey with a pregnant woman on board...

That's pretty much what they said. But having thought about it (and woken up!) I suppose that if you live in North Scotland you might be wondering if it worth going back if you're 10 plus hours away. Still I'd chance it! But there's probably other stuff about haulage I don't get!

But think overall it was seemingly mainly forigne drivers. Obviously it's an emerging situation so the reporting may not be accurate yet too.

Yes this is exactly what I mean about not knowing about haulage systems! I didn't think of people actually working on the boats. I'm sure there will be more caught up in this too.

I'm not sure what they gain from closing the border apart from pissing everyone off, including their own people. Chances are this "new strain" is already alive and multiplying in France and you would think they would have had a contingency plan for the emergence of new strains. Given what Macron is like, it feels a bit more personal than anything. He isn't happy with Brexit trade talks at the moment.

Facelikearustytractor · 21/12/2020 08:53

But yes, I do hope they are treated well. It is going to be freezing at the end of the week too. I don't think people have thought this through at all, or there is just a total disregard for these drivers and their safety.

countrygirl99 · 21/12/2020 08:58

@Facelikearustytractor I expect that what they hoped to achieve by crossing borders was delivering the food we rely on. And I'm given what Boris said last week about cancelling Christmas I don't think we have any right to query other governments planning.

Yeah I agree. Especially as we seem to be doing more dna sequencing. So it's likely we just know we have it. Also we have had the new strain for weeks if not longer. In which time so much freight has crossed to France?!

It's a shitty move from France. And it will piss of their own people too. Drivers, manufacturers, farmers to name a few groups!

Anyway in terms of stock. All of the supermarkets will have their wearhouses fully stocked for Christmas now. So I'm really not worried about stock.

I agree @Facelikearustytractor they always said the virus would change. There’s no way the UK is the only place with it. It’s not meant to be anymore deadly so the panic is just making the situation worse.

Daisy829 · 21/12/2020 09:06

I also feel for the people stuck in the middle of all of this. It’s awful they are caught up in this political game.

@MaskingForIt

They’re “foreign” not “forigne”. You got it right once in your OP and wrong in multiple other places.
I'm dyslexic I wouldn't even notice that but thanks Grin

Unfortunately on my phone what happens is I get a word wrong a few times and then my phone saves it to auto correct. So sometimes I realise and delete it. Other times when it's one letter I don't.

Im 35 and my coping mechanisms have served me well as I have a1sy class degree and a distinction in my MA. Yet there always someone picking.

What makes someone point out a star gers spelling and grammar online? I am always genuinely curious.
