To think that 10pm is not an 'early' bed time?

Just told dh I'm off to bed. He was confused. We normally go later, 11.15/30 but I had a shit nights sleep last night 1-5 (drinking tea at 5.15am) so I am very tired. Plus I have work in the am and he doesn't.

He wasn't being arsey really, he was just like 'it's only 10pm!!' As if it was still tea time.

Aibu to think that 10pm isn't that early?

I used to be a night owl but as I crept into middle age it all caught up with me. On average I get into bed 9/9:30 and read for an hour then sleep. I usually wake around 7:30 so 9 hours. I wake up several times a night so if I go to bed later I don’t wake up until gone 9. Although yesterday I had wine from 4pm and was in bed by 7:30, asleep by 8:30! Which is why I’m now awake at 5am.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 21/12/2020 05:12

Sounds like a normal to me but I have toddlers so I am being woken at 5am every morning.

Before we had kids we'd probably stay up until about 11, maybe later

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/12/2020 05:19

It sounds fine to me. I wake up naturally at 5am so 10 pm is a good time to go to bed.

MessAllOver · 21/12/2020 05:23

I'm usually up by 5.30 so 10pm is a normal bedtime for me.

MrsOmelette · 21/12/2020 05:39

I get up at 4-5am every day. I at least want to be in bed around 8pm reading even if I don’t sleep till 10-11pm when husband comes up. I am so tired all the time but struggle to get my brain to stop.
Your DH’s surprised remark somehow bothers me a wee bit, I’d have said “oh are you sweetheart, okay night” or words to that effect. I’m sure he knew you’d had a rough night previously. Also, why do you always go together, is that definitely a joint decision?
I found, turning 40, exhaustion kicked up a notch.

10 pm has been my normal bedtime since I was a teenager. I need a lot of sleep. I am only up now as I want to go to the supermarket very soon. Luckily my DH is the same so we are well matched. My adult DDs also go to bed around 10pm as does my DM. It is utterly normal in our family.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 21/12/2020 05:56

My sleep patterns aren't great at the moment and my kids still get me up through the night so I'm often exhausted and cant keep my eyes open past 10pm, sometimes earlier. But even if I wanted to stay up, what does everyone do between 10pm and midnight? I dont really watch much tv, although I read a bit. I'm a single parent so I can't go anywhere. Obvs keeping up with current affairs isn't solely a night time arrangement and doesn't take up that much time. I guess in the summer I'm more inclined to get on with some project round the house. But sleep often feels like the best use of my time, especially at the moment.

ZenNudist · 21/12/2020 05:57

Early for me. I prefer midnight but have slipped to 1am lately

xmasfairybuns · 21/12/2020 05:58

@SwedishEdith

I think it's early. I know some people who go to bed at 9. I always wonder how closely they follow current affairs.
What ?
SuperCaliFragalistic · 21/12/2020 05:58

I'm awake now because I had an awful dream about my DS drowning. I dreamt he fell and broke his neck a few weeks ago. I often have very vivid, disturbing dreams that keep me awake for hours.

😳 What on earth is that supposed to mean? I go to bed at 9pm because I sleep poorly and am usually awake by 5am. I never have been an owl!
MPolsted · 21/12/2020 06:03

I usually go to bed between 8-9pm. 10pm would be really late for me!

doctorhamster · 21/12/2020 08:16

I usually go up at 10 and go to sleep some time between 10.30 and 11. I'm exhausted by that time and can start to feel ill if I stay up later.

PreRaphaeliteMotherhood · 21/12/2020 08:20

We’re in bed by 9 most nights, often earlier. I love sleep though! DH gets up for work at 5 so it works for him. DD wakes up for a couple of feeds so I lose about an hour’s sleep overnight, and I usually get up about 7 with DS.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 08:21

Early for me but in the circumstances you describe, I don't blame you.
