To think that 10pm is not an 'early' bed time?

Just told dh I'm off to bed. He was confused. We normally go later, 11.15/30 but I had a shit nights sleep last night 1-5 (drinking tea at 5.15am) so I am very tired. Plus I have work in the am and he doesn't.

He wasn't being arsey really, he was just like 'it's only 10pm!!' As if it was still tea time.

Aibu to think that 10pm isn't that early?

I’m up very late for me (present wrapping for the last 2 hours) and would normally be in bed by 10-10.30, sometimes 9.30 if I’m tired. Get up around 7am. I like my sleep too much, and find evenings a bit dull.

Thisusernameistakenagain · 20/12/2020 23:17

I can see why he was surprised if it is early for you.

it is early for me too, but not for those who usually go a lot later?

Googlebrained · 20/12/2020 23:22

I really think it shouldn't matter what other people's sleep patterns are. If you need sleep, it's just basic self care to go to bed, whether that's at 7pm or 2am. I don't like people commenting on others' sleep needs. It's such a fundamental requirement, like eating or drinking.

notangelinajolie · 20/12/2020 23:28

10pm is early for me and I doubt I'll be going to bed till at least 2am. But DH went to bed a 9.30pm because he has to be up at 6.30am. We all have different body clocks and working hours so I wouldn't lose sleep over this Grin

MaverickDanger · 20/12/2020 23:30

It’s early for us - when working, I’m normally in bed by 11.30 and when not working, 1am.

sbhydrogen · 20/12/2020 23:31

Sounds early to me 🤔

Wingedharpy · 20/12/2020 23:35

I've often wondered if it has something to do with the time you're born which influences whether you'll grow up to be a lark or an owl.

I suppose when we all lived in caves, a good mix of larks and owls were needed to feed the tribe and keep us safe.
The larks would be off hunting a gathering, while it was light and the owls would be protecting the hunted booty from being scavenged by nocturnal creatures.

I have a lot of barmy theories based on nothing at all.

Anniissa · 20/12/2020 23:45

Definitely early for me. Often don’t eat dinner much before 8.30-9pm so need some time to unwind before bed. However everyone is different so if it works for you then great but it seems it is earlier than usual for you so can understand why your husband seemed a bit confused.

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/12/2020 00:03

@Wingedharpy

I'm nocturnal so that would be very early for me. I don't do mornings if I can get away with it. 3am - 4am is my bed time - sometimes, 5am if I find a particularly riveting Mumsnet post.
I seem to remember a thread where you and I locked antlers at about 5am and we were the only ones still up :o
Nottherealslimshady · 21/12/2020 00:08

10 is normal for us, atm we're going to bed later as we dont need to be up for work. If I'm up before 8am then I go to bed at 9.

Nottherealslimshady · 21/12/2020 00:10

It would have to be something very special to keep me awake past midnight, no matter what time I got up.

DonkeyMcFluff · 21/12/2020 00:10

10pm is the time I’d put a teenager to bed. As an adult I’d be up till close to midnight.

k1233 · 21/12/2020 01:29

I prefer to be active in the mornings. I used to get up at 3.30am to school my horse before work. Now I'm normally up any time between 4.30 and 5 am to ride before work. It's so much cooler here between dawn and the sun getting too high vs afternoon - usually 10 degrees cooler in the morning vs the afternoon in summer. A sleep in for me is 6 maybe 6.30. If I get up any later it generally means I'm sick. I tend to go to bed around 9pm. So to me 10pm is getting a bit late.

angelikacpickles · 21/12/2020 01:34

DH would be very confused if I announced that I was off to bed at 10pm and would think I wasn't feeling well.

ClarenceBoddicker · 21/12/2020 01:36

It’s early for the average adult not taking into account individual circumstances

ClarenceBoddicker · 21/12/2020 01:40

You only need to look at the TV schedules to glean that with 7-9 starts being the hotspot but plenty of still popular shows starting 10. As a nation 11 is assumed bed time hence why most shops close an hour earlier and can’t order a takeaway most places past 10:30

Wingedharpy · 21/12/2020 02:29

PyongyangKipperbang, really?
I don't often lock antlers - healthy debate, maybe😀

Rosebel · 21/12/2020 03:25

When I'm working I go to bed at 10 but I have to be up at 4:15 in the morning.
I guess it's early for you though if you normally go later.
Did your husband know you didn't get much sleep the night before?

MrDarcyismines · 21/12/2020 03:29

For me its early. I usually go to bed between midnight & 1:30am. However, I have lots of friends who go to bed at 9/10pm!

Aprilx · 21/12/2020 03:35

It is an early bedtime, but there is nothing wrong with going to bed early.

prawntoastie · 21/12/2020 03:42

I think between 10 and 12 is a normal bedtime for adults.

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 21/12/2020 04:02

In normal times 10pm is pretty average for me. In pandemic times I go to bed around 8 and chill out for 30-60 minutes and then sleep. I love sleeping at the moment, it's the only time I escape thinking and worrying about the virus. Sometimes I'm asleep by 8....

MrsDrSpencerReid · 21/12/2020 04:09

My DH goes between 9-9:30 as he’s up early for a physically demanding job, he’s also a T1D and finds his sugars go a bit haywire when he hasn’t had enough sleep. Not sure that warrants being likened to a 6yo Hmm

He is up much later on weekends as he can have a lie in in the mornings.

squeekums · 21/12/2020 04:11

@SwedishEdith

I think it's early. I know some people who go to bed at 9. I always wonder how closely they follow current affairs.
I go to bed around 1am, later on a work night when i finish at midnight Yet i choose to ignore the news, havent watched it in around a year now, i only see whats online or hear from friends I dont follow it cos i choose not to, it bores me Bed time has nothing to do with current event interest

Finishing work at 7pm feels very dismal to me.
so 5 to midnight shift is your nightmare then

Soubriquet · 21/12/2020 04:50

On a working day, I go to bed at.......4.30 pm, to read for an hour with lights out 5.30pm.

I have to be up for around 12.20am so I get lots of sleep ready for work. I start at 2am
