Beef Stroganoff, rice or pasta?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 20/12/2020 17:24

Hi Everyone, turns out myself and my partner have strong opposing views on which carb should be served with a Beef Stroganoff. I firmly believe it should be rice, but he think it should be pasta. I thought a quick poll of the Mumsnet collective would resolve the issue.

YANBU Rice is the way to go, who the fuck would have pasta with it?!

YABU WTF are you on about, pasta all the way!

Or have we overlooked the perfect accompaniment in our blinkered view of carbs?

Tenderstem broccoli Grin

CoronaIsWatching · 20/12/2020 20:49

I've never even heard of it with pasta

MrsKoala · 20/12/2020 20:50

I thought it was traditionally served with wide egg noodles, like goulash and other similar food. But we always have rice/cauliflower rice here.

CorvusPurpureus · 20/12/2020 20:55

Wide pasta noodles, definitely, with tagliatelle as probably the easiest option if you don't make your own pasta (& frankly, who does!).

However I may be biased as rice is so much my go to carb - I cook curry & chilli a lot - that I'd always avoid it for a change given something else as a viable option.

Mash could be good but I feel I'd want to fancy it up a bit in absence of gravy, maybe by adding sweet potatoes/celeriac/swede. & then I wouldn't want to be arsed so would be straight back to tagliatelle.

A quick google search finds that its traditionally served with pasta, so I stand corrected.

jammydodgersplease · 20/12/2020 20:57

Neither. French fries/skinny chips.

DartmoorDoughnut · 20/12/2020 20:58

Mash or crusty bread

Yes my partner showed me several google results with it served with pasta, from several different sources, it does seem to be the proper way of doing it but I've never had it with anything other than rice before either at home or out and about.

We had it with fusilli, it was fine actually, the sauce kinda coated all the pasta and it was pretty tasty. I think if we do it again I will go with either mash or PP's suggestion of Orzo pasta.

My hungarin friend serves it with 'noodles' which are more like dumplings

Alittlexmasmagic · 20/12/2020 21:12

Rice, mash or a jacket spud. Pasta is a no from me.

Graphista · 20/12/2020 21:22

Neither - crispy noodles!

@Nottherealslimshady I'm veggie too I make my own and have with crispy noodles if I could get decent rye bread in this country I'd have that with it

TheDogsMother · 20/12/2020 21:31

Tagliatelle

0gfhty · 20/12/2020 21:36

Think it's supposed to be noodles they have in eastern Europe and Russia. But here in the UK I've always had rice. Surely any carb is good with this no need to fuss

Rewis · 20/12/2020 21:37

rice or boiled potatoes

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2020 21:40

Ribbon noodles - very high quality.
Stroganoff must be made with fillet steak.
It's a rare treat.

LimpidPools · 20/12/2020 21:53

Well Wikipedia say fried matchstick potatoes, so I think chips is the way forward.

It's very common to serve stews and sauces with pasta or noodles here in Germany and presumably across eastern Europe. But I think pasta is horrid with gulasch too, so I voted for rice.

I think is much more common in the UK. My Google search says pasta is common in the States.

NeonSparkle · 20/12/2020 21:53

Rice 100%

RatherLostPenguinsOnParade · 20/12/2020 22:23

I made it for dinner here tonight, served on our normal rice. There's a local restaurant that serves it with half rice and half chips and I love that even more though.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 21/12/2020 00:17

Rice (or potatoes)!

elp30 · 21/12/2020 00:18

Pasta!

I've never heard of anyone eating stroganoff with anything but pasta but I'm in the US and that's how we eat it. It's usually served with egg noodles specifically.

DBML · 21/12/2020 00:20

You are both being unreasonable. It should be served with mash. If you want to go mad, this can be a vegetable mash that includes potatoes, parsnips and even carrots.
Pasta and rice are completely inappropriate in my opinion. 😁

CatVsChristmasTree · 21/12/2020 00:21

New potatoes. Or chips.

Canuckduck · 21/12/2020 02:30

Broad egg noodles. Yum!

sorryforswearing · 21/12/2020 02:31

Rice definitely.

Aprilx · 21/12/2020 02:41

Gob Smacked that anyone would consider serving it with rice, that just doesn’t go. It should be pasta or mash.
