AIBU to say that Xmas bank hols should be moved too

If Xmas is now cancelled, AIBU to say that at least 2 of 3 bank hols should be replaced for ones later in year?
Those saying Xmas is just one day, it isn’t- there are3 bank hols that make it possible for families who don’t live near each other to get meaningful time together
Should a petition be raised?

I've said this for a while. Give us extra bank holidays at Easter or Whitsun and write off Christmas

AIMD · 19/12/2020 18:09

Nice idea actually.
Although that’d be a nightmare for me personally because then I’d have to work and find childcare so allow me to work.

I

Neron · 19/12/2020 18:11

Bank Holidays don't mean anything to the self employed, or the masses who will he unemployed though

Almostslimjim · 19/12/2020 18:11

Moved, no. Extra, yes.

Moving them implies people must go to work as normal, without child care in place. Adding additional would reduce this problem.

Bargebill19 · 19/12/2020 18:11

I get what you are saying - but have a thought for some of us, this is the first break i will have had from work since April. No holidays, no time off, zero breaks and 50-70 hour working weeks.
Need a break.

Plussizejumpsuit · 19/12/2020 18:17

I feel like we should get a do over in the summer. I feel really flat about it all.

emilyfrost · 19/12/2020 18:28

YABU. Bank holidays don’t actually mean anything for a lot of people.

Meepmeeep · 19/12/2020 18:28

4 if you’re in Scotland or public holidays if we’re being pedantic.

LucyFox · 19/12/2020 18:48

No, I am looking forward to my first proper break since March & it’s to late to cancel the bank hols now.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 19/12/2020 18:53

Christmas isn't cancelled for all of us though. Dh & I can still spend the weekend together with our dc. If the bank hols were cancelled then it would mean even more people missing out.

BeenThereDone · 19/12/2020 18:55

No.. There are many people who work over the Christmas (me included) and they extra money is practically the only reward for it..

NailsNeedDoing · 19/12/2020 18:59

Great idea.

People could still be paid the extra they earn over bank holidays if there were more of them, the government would just have to fund it.

negomi90 · 19/12/2020 19:05

I'm healthcare. Bank holidays have less staff and are planned for for months. Cancelling the bank holidays has huge impact on people who would be working that day but aren't. Doctors will be doing bank holiday staffing even if they are cancelled as they can't be compelled to work at such short notice (barring emergency). It will also have an impact on childcare.
People who can't go away, can still enjoy a relaxing weekend at home, rest is still happening.

Disclaimer - I'm working Christmas weekend regardless of bank holiday status.

cologne4711 · 19/12/2020 19:08

Nope, I prefer holiday that I can take when it suits me, not when it suits the government. I can never understand the clamour for more bank holidays - am I the only person who dislikes crowds even outside covid times?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/12/2020 19:09

I work bank holidays so don't care where they fall.

AntiHop · 19/12/2020 19:14

Bank holidays cost businesses a lot. I don't think businesses can afford it.

HangOnToYourself · 19/12/2020 19:17

No that would be ridiculous at this point as people have planned the last of their annual leave around them and have no other childcare. I'm personally also looking forward to a break, it's not just about seeing family you dont live with is it?

Inthemuckheap · 19/12/2020 19:25

No - we pay staff double on bank holidays without any extra money from social services. They're difficult to cover especially this year as so many clients are staying at home so want their usual care rather than going to family for Christmas.

Bank holiday coverage is arranged weeks in advance especially at Christmas.

More bank holidays would leave us in debt and we don't get them off anyway.

luckylavender · 19/12/2020 19:36

No, businesses are struggling enough already. Bank Holidays are really expensive.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 19/12/2020 19:39

Nope. I've worked my tits off this year. I need the break, including the bank holidays.

I'd bloody riot if they were moved.

Kazzyhoward · 19/12/2020 19:50

No, we need people back at work ASAP to save businesses and save the economy. It would be madness to have extra bank holidays (which cost businesses and the government huge sums of money) just as we're getting everyone back to work.

Heyahun · 19/12/2020 20:03

It’ll never happen - sure we still got the bank holidays off work like usual and we still had to use our annual leave like usual even though we couldn’t go anywhere or do much with it !!

perditaplum · 19/12/2020 20:05

Do you actually get extra though? My dd is working on xmas day for her normal hourly rate.
midgebabe · 19/12/2020 20:08

I do think an extra holiday...but I would not announce it until I was sure of when

Brighterthansunflowers · 19/12/2020 20:08

YABU

It’s been a completely shit and exhausting year for most of us who’ve worked throughout in challenging circumstances. Am I fuck giving up the precious chance for a few days off!
