AIBU to say that Xmas bank hols should be moved too

If Xmas is now cancelled, AIBU to say that at least 2 of 3 bank hols should be replaced for ones later in year?
Those saying Xmas is just one day, it isn’t- there are3 bank hols that make it possible for families who don’t live near each other to get meaningful time together
Should a petition be raised?

So have Christmas Day, Boxing Day and NY Day as ordinary working days because Christmas is cancelled?!
Ehhhhh no thanks. I’m looking forward to spending Christmas with only my immediate family thanks!!

Ideasplease322 · 19/12/2020 20:09

People are tired - I am exhausted. Have been working from home but 70 hour weeks.

I need to rest. My team needs to rest. I want a few days when the emails stop, the phone calls stop, the endless toxic work environment stops invading my home life.

It’s been hard enough - why take this away from us too?

Whaleandsnail6 · 19/12/2020 20:10

No way. I get paid time and half for bank Holidays and I'm working nights from 25th until 28th. I can't see any other family now they've changed the rules, I'd be even more upset if they took away my extra money!

RuthW · 19/12/2020 20:21

Absolutely not! I want my bank holidays. I had to work on the two in may and two in April. At least give me a couple more this year. I work in a gp surgery.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 19/12/2020 20:33

No. I want a break from work and to enjoy my Christmas. Its low key but it's not cancelled. I wish people would stop being so dramatic.

MistletoeandGin · 19/12/2020 20:35

DH hasn’t had any annual leave since February. He needs these bank holidays.

MistletoeandGin · 19/12/2020 20:35

And we still want to celebrate Christmas together as a family.

BeenThereDone · 19/12/2020 21:25

Double time

fluffi · 19/12/2020 21:29

Christmas isn't cancelled. The people that are counting on having the bank holidays as holiday like myself and many others still need that time off work and to have a break. Otherwise I'd be using 10 days of annual leave instead of 7.

Scarlettpixie · 19/12/2020 22:09

Yabu. I am looking forward to a few days off work. Christmas isn’t cancelled just because you can’t have big gatherings, I don’t have any close family so it will be just me and DS regardless of covid!

MistletoeandGin · 19/12/2020 22:14

Some of us only spend Christmas with our household every year as we don’t have any other family. Should we never get a bank holiday?

HedgieHog · 19/12/2020 22:15

It would cost the economy too much which is why when things like proposals to giving us St. George’s/Andrews/ Davids day off gets talked about at election time but never actually actioned .
We lose money on bank holidays

Rosebel · 19/12/2020 23:48

Move them? Why? Is everything going to be normal by Easter? Or the summer?
Be a nightmare to move them but still be banned from seeing family. And a lot of people have to work bank holiday's but are getting time off at Christmas. So moving bank holidays won't help them.
Anyway BJ wouldn't want to do anything that would cheer people up.

BackforGood · 20/12/2020 00:00

YABU
Firstly, Christmas hasn't been cancelled.
Secondly, many of us do actually need a break now, with the additional work we've been doing and with having holidays cancelled over the last 9 months.

Lightsontbut · 20/12/2020 00:29

I get where you're coming from OP. I don't think it would really work but I share your frustration at the fact that we have now created a two tier situation where many NHS workers and anyone who does not live near to their family can't see any family at all over Xmas whilst others, who in some situations are the ones that have had it easier in terms of family contact for the last 9 months, can have a near-normal Xmas day. It is NOT just one day and it's mind blowingly ridiculous to hear people say that. I kind of hope all Tory MPs now see no family on Xmas day as they need to do their bit and they need to do what they are now mandating others to do.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/12/2020 00:33

What about all the people who don't work BH who will now have to go into work with v little notice for childcare? Or who might actually still be planning on celebrating Christma

SD1978 · 20/12/2020 00:45

I'd say no. Not everyone has been in the position that work has ceased. The year juts needs to be chalked up to its shit, let's hope it improves. Looking for what in it for me, when there is already a huge financial deficit thanks to the furlough scheme which saw many more people already spending more time with their family than ever before, and still have at least some income- I can't agree with more money earmarked fir three days public holiday and all that entails.

Sushirolls · 20/12/2020 01:20

I have no choice but to work if my contracted days fall on a bank hol. Extra pay is the only thing that makes it more palatable.

Rowgtfc72 · 20/12/2020 08:40

Have to work bank holidays anyways .
We're lucky Christmas fell on a Friday this year. Means we get 3 days off.
I'm not even working for retail or emergency service.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 20/12/2020 08:47

Nope. I've had 4 days off this year. I'm exhausted and starting to lose my mind. I'm working right up to Friday. If the public holidays are cancelled I will cry.

nosswith · 20/12/2020 09:01

An extra bank holiday in the summer would be better. There is one extra in 2022 for the Queen's Jubilee.

catx1606 · 20/12/2020 09:05

No no no, I've worked solidly throughout the lockdown plus extra hours and am desperately in need of a break. My team are in need of a rest. Most of us have done 60 plus hours a week. For some of us, its not just about family, it's a very much needed break

Generallybewildered · 20/12/2020 09:15

My OH’s business has already struggled this year. Each “extra” or moved bank holiday will cost him £1000.

Livpool · 20/12/2020 12:04

No.

I am look long forward to the break. This year has been bad enough

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/12/2020 13:10

no, i always work them, no extra pay, no time off in lieu
