A lot of scammers deliberately use shit grammar and spelling. For the very simple reason they want to exclude the educated from their appeal.

If you aren't able to pick up bad spelling and grammar in your own language, then you are guaranteed to be unable to understand what's being said. Hence flags and slogans "hearts and minds".

If you like elitist and apposite analogies, the idea seems to be to get the cows running the farm because they are big and heavy and pretty much outnumber all the other - cleverer - animals.

Anyone seen the White House statement on the martyrdom of Thomas Beckett? It is not entirely historically accurate (no surprises) but the promotion of a saints cult for political reasons is quite medieval in spirit Grin

The cynic in me can't help feeling that when it goes on about religious freedoms and the right to follow religious convictions etc they actually wanted to write 'Christian freedoms.

From memory the Canterbury Tales make a similar sly point.

I remember someone (Comey? Clapper) sitting in a Senate(?) hearing citing, “Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?” as the method used by the Trump admin to get rid of people who failed to put Trump above country.

That's an... interesting choice for a statement from the Trump White House.

I notice they've also shoved in “rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God”. Wonder who the tyrant referred to is? Who is being called to arms?

Then there's a really clunky para at the bottom, trying to slip in a reversal and hope no one notices. Because of course, religions attempting to dictate the laws of sovereign nations, crosses the boundary of church-state interference just as much as nations attempting to dictate the beliefs of religions.

In fact, now I read that again...

Thomas Becket’s martyrdom changed the course of history. It eventually brought about numerous constitutional limitations on the power of the state over the Church across the West.

Erm, are you going to tell them about Henry VIII and the establishment of the church of England, or shall I?

It is a very weird statement... It is not a period I know in detail but I never associated the Beckett murder that strongly either with magna Carta or changing the course of history.

Does Trump need Catholic support urgently? I associated his followers with Evangelism not Catholicism (though that might be stereotyping on my part).

I did, but only because I collect saints' days. For instance the patron saint of authors (Francis of Sales) has two days, and they are five days apart; clearly one was the deadline and the other was when he handed in the copy.

Since when does the US issue proclamations commemorating the martyrdom of religious figures (of any religion)? Did he issue a proclamation about the Jewish martyrs at Masada or the 5 martyrs of Shia Islam?

Last I looked the US is still not a Theocracy.

Makes me wonder who in the WH thought this one up.
