Sick of long shapeless covid hair

Like a gazilluon orher women, of all ages, in 2020 when hairdressers being open were rarer than hens teeth, I thought.
I Know! I'll grow my hair!
It was a novelty for a while but everybody looks so scruffy ( myself included )
Next time I go to the hairdressers I think I'm tempted to have it all lopped off.
I never thought I would miss Layers
and having hair in an actual style instead of long scruffy, neither here nor there haitstyles that women have now. Anybody else sick of the wurzel gummige look?

Do it your self it’s super easy pony at the top of your head and then cut it gives lovely layers too YouTube it

RickJames · 18/12/2020 18:33

Order some decent shampoo and products on the internet... long and shiney is always a good look. But yeah, nice long hair is work.

rosegoldwatcher · 18/12/2020 18:36

I was already months overdue for a cut and colour when the first lock down arrived in March - now haven't been since September 2019.

I have tried to maintain with root touch up and DH regularly hacks off a couple of inches (straight line only, I don't trust him to layer.)

I have split ends, grey patches at the back and look bloody awful!
Oh to be a man.

RickJames · 18/12/2020 18:43

If you aren't already able to blow dry your hair properly then try some YouTube videos. I'm lucky that I used to work part time in my mates branch of a nice national chain salon when I was at college. I'd stay back after work and watch the company trainers do blow outs and styles so I can blow out my own hair better than most junior stylists when I do go to the hairdresser. It takes at least an hour to do it properly with thick hair. Also wash your hair every 5 days, you won't hate the hour of arms in the air blow drying so much and your hair will be in better condition. Don't despair!

I think that young people look brill with long hair. After a certain age it can look scruffy. It's mote high maintenance unfortunately. And more expensive

The trouble is that shorter hair styles need frequent cuts, IME, and with lockdowns being announced with very little notice it's almost inevitable that's not going to happen.

If you have anything other than poker straight hair, the one thing guaranteed to look worse than long and unstyled is 'growing out from short and unstyled."

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 18/12/2020 18:46

I’d take long shapeless hair over mine. It’s basically a mullet that doesn’t ever gain length. I bleached my hair 6 years ago and the top layers all snapped off to like an inch. They’ve grown back but only to my ear length and they don’t grow any more, it’s like the natural hair cycle has shrank. Underneath hair more towards the back grows to just touching shoulders then falls out. I’ve tired regular trims, no trims, biotin, oils, lotions, potions... I’d fucking kill for long boring hair and not have to pin and spray into a half up half down “style” every day to make it look semi normal Sad

MariaHairy · 18/12/2020 18:48

DIY all the way. YouTube is your friend. I couldn't afford haircuts for a long time so have been diy-ing for a while but my hair looks really good now.

user1493413286 · 18/12/2020 18:48

During the first lockdown I remembered why I keep my hair a certain length as any longer it starts looking scruffy, less bouncy (if that makes sense) and a bit scraggly

likeamillpond · 18/12/2020 18:52

I've grown my hair long
But I feel so scruffy. I hate it.
I was in a clothes shop yesterday and there were some other women in there with their I've decided to grow my hair and frankly they looked scruffy and unkempt.

I am after most certain ages you could think of!

Agreed 100%

'mumsnet haircut'?

nitgel · 18/12/2020 18:56

I've embraced heated rollers and have big hair

Do not do this!! I did it myself like this and ended up looking like Billy Ray Cyrus with a mullet. Unless you are auditioning for a Def Leppard tribute act, it's not a good look.

Then it tried to even it out and it was even worse! I finally got my hair cut short and evened out six long months later. Just hoping Welsh lockdown is lifted before I need a trim Blush

TheCanyon · 18/12/2020 19:04

My hair was down to the bottom of my ribs, straight and fairly shapeless. Got it cut up to my shoulders and layered two week ago. I HATE it, I'm such a lazy twat that I never dry it and so it turns out the weight of the length must keep it straight. Now it's all wavy and fluffy AND the front cut in bits fall out a bobble Angry

IPeedInThePool · 18/12/2020 19:07

My hair does not look like a mullet at all I have mid length layers and longish hair I’ve been cutting it for about 2 years

You ate lucky and obviously suit long hair. Im betting you're young as well. Us oldies, I'm not so sure it suits us. I think we benefit more from a bit of styling. Sad fact but true.

Me! Oh, I'm so so so sick of my unkempt hair. Honestly, I'm not a vain person by any stretch. I don't wear makeup and just shove my hair into a bun or pony tail every day and my clothes are very unfashionable. But the hair. It's been over a year and it's so scraggly and rat-tailed. I didn't want to risk COVID while pregnant so didn't have it done over the summer and now I've got an EBF baby so wouldn't be able to easily do it now even if hairdressers were open near me. So tempted to just ask DH to have a bash with scissors.

MarcelineMissouri · 18/12/2020 19:10

Hairdressers are open everywhere now aren’t they??

likeamillpond · 18/12/2020 19:14

Yes they are. But all the clients are: I want to grow my hair! I think we are slightly delusional lol We don't all suit long hair

SnackSizeRaisin · 18/12/2020 19:15

I cut my own. It's curly and I think I do a much better job than any hairdresser I've ever been to. Cut it dry and chop bits off till it looks right. Usually takes a few days to get it how I like it. If your hair is straight it's more difficult I imagine, as any asymmetry is more obvious.

ChrissyPlummer · 18/12/2020 19:15

My hairdresser reopened after the first lockdown, closed in the second one and has been open since. Where are you that they are still closed??
