Ring doorbell hell!

Hi all,

My neighbors door is right next to mine with only a brick between them. They have just got a ring doorbell (2 days ago) and I hate it!

Not only is the noise bloody annoying but it's covering my door. There is no way they can set it up to not cover both doors, they are just too close.

I don't like the fact whoever comes to my door is now on their bell cam. I also feel uneasy about the fact my kids will be on there, because you know kids leave the house, my house!

I'm pissed off that anything I buy, like a new TV, they will see and be able to have a good nose. Because they can rewatch and bloody pause.

So I need Mumsneters help. How do I go about this? Do I talk to them? How do I word it? How do I tell them that the bell they paid for has got to go? Do I offer to pay for it?

What if they say no? Do I have a leg to stand on here?

Or do I just get a family member with face covered in the night to nick it and smash it? Yes ring do replace nicked bells but not unlimited. I could get it nicked time and again.

AIBU here? Should I just accept that this is the way now? People videoing your door and kids? Idk I just feel they were wrong to get it without asking if I minded.

Funny enough a family member asked me if I wanted one about a year ago and I said no because it would invade my neighbors door.

I have a ring doorbell and because it is situated so it looked out at my garden? It also sees the neighbor across the streets back door. And my side neighbors does too. It's how we stopped a break in at the neighbors house three months ago. At 3 am my doorbell chimed that there was a person detected and there was someone with a crowbar going at the neighbors back door. We called the cops and the guy tried to run but they caught him.

No I don't think your neighbor cares a wit about your kids on camera.

You must think pretty highly of yourself and any guests if you think your neighbours are going to watch back on their ring app anytime you have a visitor or delivery. 😆

You can set them up so they only work in zones this not covering your front door.

@Biddums I think it’s a privacy issue and is against the law - see attached

My next door neighbour has one. As far as I am aware he isn’t a criminal nor has any negative intentions. I honestly dont think I could bring myself to give a shit.

It’s illegal to record somebody like this .
Just tell them straight .
Sounds horrendous

They’ve prob put the bell up for their own safety and security and find it annoying that you set it off by going in and out and having TVs delivered - there’s always two sides to a story. Doubt they spent all that money for anything to do with you. Maybe one day it might help you out, you never know!

If they day comes where I'm rewatching videos of the comings and goings of neighbour's on my ring door bell then its game over I'm afraid. Perhaps your neoghbpurs are the same and actually have a life. The things people actually think about in their day to day life absolutely bewilder me maybe you and your family are just not taht important to your neighbour's OP ?

Maybe you should view it as a security benefit for you, without having to pay anything. Kids being kids tell them to put their masks on and hoodies up when entering or leaving your house. Does it really matter if the neighbours see what you’re buying, I would care less what next door is buying.

BuntyCollocks · 17/12/2020 17:54

Literally no one gives a shit about what happens in other folks houses or their comings and going’s, so unless there’s a backstory, YABVU.

Also, they probably have it set up just to record when someone presses the door bell rather than any random activity.

Can’t believe you’re actively worrying about this.

I can see your point to a certain degree.

But do you not realise that both you and are children are being filmed everywhere, everyday. Street CCTV, supermarkets, schools, car dash cams. Are you going to have the same conversation with each merchant every time you walk through the door? I think not.

I would highly recommend the ring doorbell. My elderly aunt was robbed on her door step by a "window cleaner".

We stay a 25minute drive away and use it to check anyone who comes to her door. If anyone seems suss it gives us the ability to talk directly to them and tell them to fuck off, we have your face and the police are on there way.

Hope your neighbors aren't vulnerable.
Glad you managed to resolve it in an amicable way.

Glad you sorted it. I'd have felt as you do - I hate this insidious filming of everything - it's such an invasion of privacy.

@VenusTiger

I don't understand what your problem is personally - it's not like you're doing private things on your driveway is it?? Give over OP - you really think ppl are that bored that they're going to watch hours of footage of you and your family entering and exiting your house? seriously? that says a lot about you tbh.
They can watch you live by the magic of vision out of their window you know.
Get a grip.

I had the same thought.
They could just sit by their window and watch, if they were that interested.
But then you would have seen this... and my guess is that you have not seen them do this, so why would they do any different with their doorbell?
My neighbours kindly sent me footage of the guys who stole my catalytic convertor which might help catch them. It's not all bad.

I've got one doesn't overlook my neighbours door but we share a path. I've never once used it to snoop on them lol it has so much footage u can't look at every single one u don't have the time u would know if u had one! I have to have it as my cars been broken into twice and the police don't care so I can see my car on the drive way and it's a deterrent. I usually only check if it goes off late at night or early hours as that's when I got broken into.
I've never even seen my neighbours on mine I don't care what their doing or who goes in and out it's for my own safety. Lots on our road have cctv cameras aswell we can't make them take it down.
I've also helped police in a domestic abuse case when he walked past my camera at night and said he was at home.
Everything is recorded these days it's life.

Op I'm glad it all worked out for you. FWIW I would feel exactly the same way as you do about it, including getting it removed by whatever means necessary (but glad it's not come to that for you 😁)

Report
viccytwiffy · 17/12/2020 18:09

wind chime plan - try it - might work that they have to dismantle it... try all ideas that drive your neighbours to remove it... failing that... the black ski mask at night idea can't fail... its a great to be determined about these things, carefully considered and thought out. and fair play to you

simba2009 · 17/12/2020 18:10

I doubt your neighbours are spying on you and if anything is an added bonus that it covers your property and will hopefully deter any burglars. I could understand if it was overlooking your back garden but surely the front door is visible from the road anyway so anyone walking past or sat in a car outside would see everything and everyone going through your front door. Unless you have anything to hide I don’t see what the problem is. Our kids are captured on film all the time by cctv.

Have not read the whole 12 pages OP, but believe that under the Common Law of nuisance, you are entitled to the "quiet enjoyment" of your home, which would probably cover privacy issues to some extent. Can you get a quick cheap consultation with a solicitor? But first, perhaps speak to the neighbour and tell them your concerns. I would hate this situation, good luck.

Report
Loopey007 · 17/12/2020 18:18

Think if you subscribe to Rng which is payable it then saves the video. Otherwise you can just see / speak to who is at the door for deliveries.
So do you really think people would be that interested and be bothered to watch what you were bringing into the house. Well if you bought a tv they would see the box when it went out for recycling as would everyone else passing the house.
They would probably see the children in your garden or going past the window and unless they are the neighbours from hell I think you are worrying out of all proportion.

@Bluntness100 they won't be sitting there watching and waiting, because the sodding thing tells them!!! They will look because it will ping off or why else would they have one? Our doors are so close even with the setting set to the minimum it will still tell them. They are not going to turn it off or why else buy it

You must have super weird neighbours 😳
I literally only look at it when I’m out, so that I can instruct delivery drivers to hide my packages

BunsyGirl · 17/12/2020 18:20

An Amazon delivery person stole a parcel from our doorstep. It was caught on our Ring and Amazon dealt with the matter very swiftly once we told them that their delivery driver had been caught red handed. I really can’t see why you would have a problem with it.

I may be wrong (usually am!) but there was something on ‘south today’ local TV news about a court case in Thame where a ring doorbell was set up to film visitors to householders (and neighbours) door, and neighbour instigated court action. Not too sure of outcome, but it was definitely Thame.
