Do you ‘hate follow’ anyone?

Hate is a strong word but hopefully some will know what I mean. Grin

Do you have people on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter who you find intensely annoying but somehow you can’t help but look at their posts and wind yourself up/eye roll?

OP posts:
CrazyToast · 14/12/2020 19:53

Yes! There is one person in particular who I occasionally social media stalk, if I feel like torturing myself and making myself feel inadequate, and outraged! They are very beautiful and pseudo famous based on (what I know to be) utter lies, and it drives me insane that someone can get ahead this way. Not a healthy habit!

Vivarium · 14/12/2020 19:58

Oh, and I also unwisely accepted a FB friend request from a fellow schoolmum whom I didn't really like - it turned out that she just wanted as many social media contacts as possible in order to flog her MLM diet/nutrition/health crap.

That was quite entertaining for a while, as she went full on with the fake super-duper MLM lifestyle posts, and I knew her IRL and could see fictional her social media was, including poorly faked photos.

Plus.... "now I'm 8 stone!!"? No, you're not, dear. Not unless you're filled with helium. Grin

HerculesMuligan · 14/12/2020 20:03

Oh yes! I went to university with some super posh women (‘yahs’ for those who’ve been there!), who now all seem to be ‘lifestyle influencers’ of some sort. They’ve all now married equally posh men and are sending their posh children to expensive private schools. There’s something very compelling about their identikit thin blonde appearances and Farrow & Ball homes.

LookMoreCloselier · 14/12/2020 20:06

Yes, hate following Donald Trump and a local instawanker/influencer.

TikTokFinger · 14/12/2020 20:07

I follow some American Christian fundamentalists (eg The Transformed Wife) I never realised Christianity could be dangerous until I started following these people. They believe that there’s no such thing as marital rape for example. Complete submission to your husband, which is actually scarier than it sounds. It really is scary stuff.

NoMoreDucksToGive · 14/12/2020 20:09

Kind of. I'm mesmerised by Alexandra Tolstoy on Instagram. She's had some huge privilege and some real hardship and just shares it all so openly on social media. I am constantly agog. Also her politics are very different to mine so it's quite an eye opener about how some people live and think!

PussyMalanga · 14/12/2020 20:11

Most of my Instagram, to be perfectly honest!

Sparklingbrook · 14/12/2020 20:17

I follow siblingsordating on Instagram. It really winds me up as I guess wrong every single time, and I hate it. Grin

Mrs Hinch - I swing between love and hate

Barmyfarmy · 14/12/2020 20:22

Definitely a few school friends who have grey crushed velvet sofas... DH and I love hate watching anyone who thinks their home is 'farmhouse style' as we live on a farm and they never have entire floors coated in mud or sheep tootling through the kitchen!

I hate-follow Zoella and even thinking about her sickly sweet fakeness makes me want to chew my teeth!

Mrs Hinch - I swing between love and hate
I dip in and out. It's all very samey with her at the moment and it's been a while since i have picked up a cleaning tip.
Bagelsandbrie · 14/12/2020 20:24

I don’t actually follow them but I look people up and secretly view their accounts Grin I won’t give them the satisfaction of an extra follower.

DulcieMainwaring · 14/12/2020 20:33

I try not to, but it's hard sometimes -- like not scratching a mosquito bite! But I dislike it so much when people (friends of friends or former friends) hate-follow me, especially if they can't hold back from making snippy little comments on my posts. I try and step back from them rather than keep getting up their nose. Fortunately I'm not famous or anything, so it's really easy to do.

My personal rule is that if I really really want to comment GOOD FOR FUCKING YOU THEN on someone's FB posts, I unfollow them. Grin

FestiveStrop · 14/12/2020 20:34

I think I answered in the wrong way, I meant I won't keep following someone I don't like just to give them the chance to stalk my every move when it suits them.

I'd rather block.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/12/2020 20:35

Yes, I think it's really important to expose myself to different views so I can challenge my own, rather than only seeing views in a bubble that agrees with me.

FestiveStrop · 14/12/2020 20:36

I'm talking about RL people.

SimplyRadishing · 14/12/2020 20:38

Rosie Londoner
Her life is one giant fake handbag lie but I somehow find myself returning to her shitty blog and IG where she "plumps" for things on the menu month after month 🤷‍♀️

Egghead68 · 14/12/2020 20:39

Donald Trump on twitter

Vargas · 14/12/2020 20:41

I used to follow my bf's ex on FB, just so I could keep her up to date with the crazy shit he was up to (they have a child together) but he must have blocked me as I haven't seen anything from him for a while.

NoDabbingPlease · 14/12/2020 20:43

@Springersrock

No.

I have a couple of Facebook friends that I’ve unfollowed/put on restricted as there’d be a massive fuss if I un-friended them but otherwise, no.

I do this with people who annoy me but I can't officially unfriend without it being a massive big deal I'd rather avoid. Love that IG mute button so much!
PassataQueenofBritain · 14/12/2020 20:43

No! Life is too short for such negativity.
What's that saying about eating poison but expecting the other person to die?
Let it wash over you.

Mybedislisting · 14/12/2020 20:46

@Sparklingbrook Totally agree - bit of a snore fest at the minute. She’s obviously under contract as it’s a limited set of brands she pushes now. Can’t remember the last time she got her “Dave” out

VienneseWhirligig · 14/12/2020 20:46

Yep. A total fantasist I used to babysit who still lives opposite my parents with her mum. She is a glamour model and (i suspect) cam girl but claims that every man in the street comes on to her all the time and she had a torrid affair with the man next door. I doubt it. He's in his 70s and gay. The other side is a widowed elderly lady... she also claims to live in Oxford and go to Oxford Uni. She actually lives in Solihull and works in a call centre day to day when not modelling because my DH used to be the security guard there.

I follow her just to roll my eyes at her latest bollocks Grin

HolyBuckets · 14/12/2020 20:48

Yes, several local MLM bots. It's like a train wreck.
