To be unreasonably annoyed at Royals at the pantomime

Gigheimer · 11/12/2020 23:24

I post knowing I’m totally unreasonable (probably) and you’ll all shout but I got both angry and sad and rage at seeing the press stories of Kate and Wills at the pantomime in the West End.

I’m normally a fan, and of course I don’t begrudge those cute kids a pantomime.

But my kids don’t get that this year, no Santa experiences, no pantomime no fucking nothing because we are tier 3 and if our local pub or theatre ever open again I’ll die of shock.

But we are in the North so who gives a fuck right?

I just have the absolute unreasonable fury tonight.

It's annoying because, once again, the royal family is making it VERY clear they are above everybody else and have no sympathy or care towards the rest of the plebes.

Does anyone remember the advice at the beginning of the lockdown? STAY HOME, do not rush to your summer house and spread the virus there.

The first ones to fly (or drive) away from London were most of the royals. Fine, I might have done the same, but you cannot say that they were at risk of being cooped up in a hellish tower block
and they cannot pretend they have any role in this country any more.

If nothing else, them rushing to one of their other palaces was an invitation to everybody else to do the same...if others were lucky enough to have a secondary home somewhere.

HitthatroadJack · 12/12/2020 12:33

@mamaoffourdc

Pantos are on here - tier 2 - Christmas light displays are on, Santa visits are on - you are being over sensitive- they are not breaking any rules in their tier 🙄🙄🙄
Who said they were breaking the rules? It's not even a family outing, they are making a show of some event nicknamed "duty", with no regards for the rest of the country.

Next they will "promoting" Lapland UK....
(if they want to go privately, they should, the kids would love it. Just don't be an hypocrite and make it part of your official role).

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/12/2020 12:34

It is shit, you know you're being unreasonable, but that doesn't stop your feelings being valid.
I don't think you wish misery on anyone, but the way the North (I always feel very GoT posting that) has been treated is appalling. So seeing the rich and privileged getting even more nice things can be pretty galling.

Key workers. probably.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/12/2020 12:39

@Eleganz

I assume this theatre can do this due to lottery funding

While I agree about the leaving London part, can you tell me how are they making clear they are above everyone else by attending an event with many others (key workers) to which they were invited to (to raise the profile of it, why else)?

Time2change2 · 12/12/2020 12:42

@Aprilx

It’ not just about watching a pantomime, it’s about “then” v “us”, the extremely privileged V plebs.

No it really wasn’t about that. It was about them showing support for both key workers and for the arts. You cannot honestly think they went there to show off, or that the train trip was for their personal benefit.

Most normal people, the ones not twisted with bitterness, would have been pleased and excited by such a visit. I personally enjoyed looking at photos of the family in the newspaper.

Of course I don’t think they went to show off! They went because they were told to. However it has come across to many as showing off hence this thread being made in the first place. Looking like you are showing off dressed up for a family night out to the theatre (when it’s going to be mainstream news everywhere) when millions are unable to do hardly any of their usual Christmas outings is in bad taste, esp if you are currently in a tier 3 area and lots has been cancelled completely. And yes, I am bitter, as are millions of others feeling the same. We have every right to be bitter and angry.
MintyCedric · 12/12/2020 12:44

I can see where you're coming from about the Royal, but the North/South rhing is over egging it a bit.

I'm on the south coast, we went into lockdown in Tier 1, came out in Tier 2 although the figures for infection and deaths had barely changed overall.

No one really has theatre, concerts etc at the moment. It's just as grim down South.

Pringlemonster · 12/12/2020 12:44

I wondered the same actually
Everything here is either ticket only months in advance,and hardly any tickets
Or cancelled
So we have nothing nice to look forward to.
Might of been a nice gesture to offer their tickets to children with nothing

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/12/2020 12:44

Tbh your anger shouldn't be with someone going to a panto, but with government (you people voted in) who handled this all so badly, you can't go too 🤷🏻

Aleays makes me laugh when people say "get rid of ryals and get elected representative in". As if the voting record here indicates someone better and cheaper will get in there.

DrFoxtrot · 12/12/2020 12:44

I think unless you're in an area that has been affected by the most strict restrictions for so long, it is difficult to fully understand the feeling of bitterness.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/12/2020 12:45

Sorry for typos🤦

ineedaholidaynow · 12/12/2020 12:49

I have one DC, we can spend more money on him than we could if we had more children. Should I not do this because there are larger families who have limited budgets.

Many places even in Tier 3 are trying to find ways to put things on for children.

Many people can’t afford or don’t want to go to pantos even in non COVID times. Does this mean pantos should not be on?

I would hate to be those Royal children having photographers/people following them around wherever they go, for the rest of their lives.

wewillmeetagain · 12/12/2020 12:52

@Time2change2 yes I'm in tier 2

Would you what’s app photos to your contact list of your DC opening and enjoying all his lovely expensive presents, if you knew that half your contacts didn’t have the money to buy their children any presents?

‘Many places in Tier 3 are putting things on for the kids’
That’s nice for them. Pretty much all cancelled around here

Time2change2 · 12/12/2020 12:57
@Time2change2 yes I'm in tier 2
Yes well then you are able to sit in the warmth, eat, drink and coffee and watch a show if you can get tickets. Not really comparable I’m afraid.

This exactly.
HeadNorth · 12/12/2020 12:59

The tour of the country was pretty tone deaf - especially when the heads of the devolved nations politely suggested it wasn't the best idea, when they are frantically trying to discourage travel over the festive season.

Ill advised at best, selfish and thoughtless at worst. Utterly pointless in either case.

Figgygal · 12/12/2020 13:02

I’ve seen your update so I can see that you’ve mellowed a little bit
To be honest why shouldn’t they have gone it was a special performance to support the arts and to support key workers. Should the royal family and particularly those children just hide away inside so as to avoid allegations of privilege?

I’m in tier three it’s bloody miserable my kids birthday is next week it’s going to be a total damp squib but just because we can’t do certain things that other parts of the country can do it doesn’t bother me.
Why should everyone be miserable?

Emilyontmoor · 12/12/2020 13:19

London should go into Tier 3 this week. If it doesn’t it will be because Boris has to pander to his libertarian right wing. Infection rates are going through the roof in some boroughs because people in the East took advantage of being in tier 2 to crowd out the shopping streets and late night entertainment areas without masks or socially distancing. Am I angry that the royals took their children to a properly socially distanced performance and conformed to the rules, no. Am I angry that selfish people are ignoring the rules and spreading infection. Yes. Whether they are north, where they endanger my parents and family and friends, or south. Am I angry that Boris has handed the test track and trace strategy that could have suppressed the virus as it has for friends and family in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, to his incompetent cronies who have failed? Yes.

I save my anger for the correct targets....

DarceyDashwood · 12/12/2020 13:24

There are numerous pantos being staged at theatres around the country in non Tier 3 areas - it wasn’t some special VIP panto being put on especially for the royal kids. 🙄

The theatre industry has been decimated by covid and this might help build audience confidence in returning to live theatre.

My DS’s school arranged for a little mobile panto company to come and stage a show in their hall for all the different classes to watch one at a time over a few days - should they not have done this as some children won’t get to watch a panto this year? 🙄

FYI The National Theatre will be streaming this year’s panto Dick Whittington for free on You Tube at 3pm on Dec 23 - so a great chance for kids all over the country to watch a top quality panto for free at home.

DarceyDashwood · 12/12/2020 13:29

@Eleganz

That’s really not what’s happened. The National Lottery have supported many theatres across tier 1/2 by essentially buying the panto seats which they have to keep empty for social distancing reasons. The Palladium panto, which is running until January, is just one of them, and includes this one-off performance for key workers but it’s absolutely not a single event.

Could you point me to where the national lottery is specifically funding performances for key workers in the regions? I see they have provided some money to a large production company to support putting on pantos regionally but nothing about key worker events other than the one in London. I maybe wrong but I'm struggling to find anything about it.

Yes but you’d presumably had months of minimum restrictions and now you’re still only in tier 2. The point some of us is trying to make is that we’ve not been allowed into other peoples gardens since July! I had a holiday 2 hours from home cancelled because I was in tier 3 but those in tier 2 could go. I’ve stuck to the rules and not left my area for months. We’ve now gone back into tier 3 but an even harsher tier 3 than before. Might not seem a big deal to you but easy for you to say that with less restrictions! I know many people in the area are starting to despair yet the thought of areas in the South going into Tier 3 and there’s testing in schools etc.

MintyCedric · 12/12/2020 13:51

@1AngelicFruitCake

Overall that's a fair point. For me personally it's made no difference as I've been caring for a terminally ill parent since April, so to protect them have isolated myself as much as possible.

Admittedly it makes a difference when it's (somewhat) by choice.
