EU blackmailing the UK

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

@kungfupannda, but I, hopefully like everyone, want everyone to win, the UK, the EU, ROTW. I'm not sure the fish will win but they'll be doing their patriotic duty.

Frequentflier · 11/12/2020 13:27

@DrBlackbird

For business purposes, are considerably further away and will demand reciprocity. Visas for trade with India, for example?

Already happened with respect to study visas. Including the right for these students to stay in the UK to work after their studies. Since 2012, Indian students haven't been permitted to work in the UK once they finished their studies, but this is now part of UK India trade agreement discussions.

Anyhow, apparently we would rather have students from India than care workers or nurses from the EU?

As far as I know, all students from all countries are now allowed to stay in the UK for two years post studies. This was hastily introduced because international students boycotted UK universities in droves, when the Tories cut down on post-work visas earlier.

The EU never conceived any country would be brave enough to leave on an Australian solution. An historical failure of imagination on their part. They'll regret their lack of imagination and narrow-mindedness and petty-fogging inflexibility, some might say.

CherryValanc · 11/12/2020 13:32

You'll be better off eating fish than beans OP. With a No Deal there's going to be an abundance with no where to go. Beans, not so much.

DGRossetti · 11/12/2020 13:32

Shame the UK chose to do Brexit at a time when it had the two worst PMs in its history.

Three - you forgot Cameron.

And you have reversed cause and effect. It's because we've had such shit PMs we're getting such a shit Brexit.

Iwantacookie · 11/12/2020 13:32

OP why dont you first of all learn what blackmail is.

bongsuhan · 11/12/2020 13:34

Woahisme · 11/12/2020 13:44

If anyone voted leave with the mindset that the UK held ALL the cards. I hope this thread serves as a reminder that we do not and we never did. It was a big fat lie.

Clavinova · 11/12/2020 13:46

Don't forget Jeremy;

2017 The Labour leader has told Andrew Marr that his party wants to leave the single market.

Laying out the case for leaving the single market, Corbyn used language we have rarely heard from him - blaming immigration for harming the lives of British workers.

The Labour leader said that after leaving the EU, there would still be European workers in Britain and vice versa. He added: "What there wouldn't be is the wholesale importation of underpaid workers from central Europe in order to destroy conditions, particularly in the construction industry."

DGRossetti · 11/12/2020 13:48

Brexit is going so badly for the UK that it must have been a masterplan by the EU all along. After all, we can see how easy it would have been to swing the vote. Some meaningless platitudes about sovereignty. A 3 word slogan here or there (Taking back control, Brexit means brexit) faux outrage that it might be in anyway about immigration and you're already at 45%. Throw in some "That Farage, he's a character isn't he ?" and the suggestion that you'd be "giving the Tories a kicking" and you've got your 52%.

AuldAlliance · 11/12/2020 13:50

Don't forget Jeremy

About as relevant as "Don't forget Lloyd George" at this point.

SabrinaThwaite · 11/12/2020 13:51

But will our wonderful patriotic fish swim in formation in British waters, making little flying goggles with their fins, humming the 633 Squadron theme though?

onlythepianoplayer · 11/12/2020 13:55

The EU never conceived any country would be brave enough to leave on an Australian solution

Stupid. Not brave.

And the "australian solution" is a buzzword for "no solution".

They'll probably quote Dickens as they line up to be topped and tailed in preparation for consumption by John Bull and Jonny Englander.

'It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done. It is a far, far better Brexit that I go to, than I have ever known.'

Brings a tear to the patriotic eye...

I think the OP must be on a wind up Xmas Confused

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 14:21

I am just back from a christmas shopping trip, and surprised to see so many replies! Clearly my post struck a cord.

For those that are genuinely interested, and not using the thread to vent, I do believe that in a matter of months not years, the true scale of the EU political ambitions will be laid bare, and much of Europe (and all the remainers) will fully understand the reasons why we are going to such lengths to leave. If we were so small and insignificant why worry about competition? Why not be a little generous in spirit? No?

I truly believe the genuine remainers on here will then get it, they have shown no sign of understanding whatsoever of what is at stake up to now. Preferring the status quo to go on forever, even if it is very bad for our country. The moment is right now, and it is now or never, and we have to grasp the nettle and leave, before it is too late.

We have our own currency, we have a talented and prosperous nation, we will be fine. I am concerned for the friendly countries we will leave behind, many countries are going to suffer very badly in the coming years from a democratic as well as an economic deficit.

I am okay with your insults, I know who is on the right side of history. I am confident and have total clarity for the future for us. There is not a single person I know in RL that is comfortable about the EU expansion, not one. So as a country it is better for us to leave now and let them continue - ultimately you can choose to be part of a corrupt dodgy club and look elsewhere whilst they take it in turns kneecapping the weaker countries (Greece springs to mind but there are others) as the EU becomes ever more aggressive, controlling and bullying, or you can find your courage and balls and leave, and give your population their independent country back whilst you are at it.

Keep going Boris. MN is not reflective of the real world thank heavens.

I am feeling great, I am feeling ready and more than that I know for sure you are going to look back on this and wonder how you ever thought it was a good idea to remain!

"450 million people in the EU, and their democratically elected representatives, likewise don't give a rat's ass what you think'

What? You've shocked me there! 🙄.

Look, it is about compromise a word some of you need to look up. We want their goods, they want ours. The EU should be working at a way to achieve that without tariffs on both sides. Put the economies before their egos.

This 'level playing field' bollocks, imagine if Sturgeon wins her indyref2 and Johnson tells her she must abide by any rules we impose at any point in the future, she would rightly tell him where to go.

In the spirit of friendliness - can you outline the tangible things we can look forward to? This is not a challenge - My husband has lost his job as a direct result of Brexit, so I would genuinely appreciate some comfort now

Don't we have a level playing field agreement with Japan?

PortiasPlumUpduffedPudding · 11/12/2020 14:31

Bozo should resign on Monday if he takes us out with no deal on Sun, what a legacy.....the twat who destroyed the UK! He will not be treated kindly by history

Didyousaynutella · 11/12/2020 14:33

I love the way mumsnetter want our country to go down the pan just they can gleefully say I told you so. I voted remain. But now that that’s not happening I don’t want our country to be fucked. I’ve never much liked the power the EU held over us. It isn’t what it set out to be. It is now a superstate with control over every aspect of our lives. We have always paid more for everything and had a worse quality of life compared to the Germans and the French even when in the EU. So maybe it is time to make a change. Just wish people would stop wanting us to fail.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2020 14:33

"I do believe that in a matter of months not years, the true scale of the EU political ambitions will be laid bare, and much of Europe (and all the remainers) will fully understand the reasons why we are going to such lengths to leave"
The Trump defence - we have brilliant reasons which you don't know about but one day you will. We can't tell you right now but we are so trustworthy that you must agree with us.
