EU blackmailing the UK

999 replies

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

@Doublebubblebubble

OMG op.

Brexit was a choice. Brexiters chose this. As a remainer I'm loving their sudden realisation of what theyve done.

Britain wants to padlock the doors and the EU wants to padlock their own too. I dont see what you dont get. You are being a karen OP

And then crying meany at those EU negotiators and people pointing out to them that this is exactly what they voted for.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/12/2020 11:07

‘Middle class gripes are petty’🤔

It’s going to hit the poorer classes harder. And why did a load of shit that l didn’t vote for deprive me of holidays and fucking tomatoes fgs.

Tourism is an essential part of the EU and U.K. economy, brings in millions. But of course we don’t ‘need’ it, even though Covid has shafted the economy, and the country is on its knees! What better way is their to encourage more consumer spending when the essentials have been accounted for?

Fucking sovereignty! Who gives a flying fuck?

DGRossetti · 11/12/2020 11:07

To all the remainers, why is it do you think, that the EU will do a trade deal with Canada but not so a similar or even an equivalent deal with the UK?

Rather than embarrass yourself and anyone who agrees with you any further, why not look at a map and read about Canada. Then do the same for the UK (since you don't seem to know why the two countries are in any way different).

Then you can answer your own question !

woodhill · 11/12/2020 11:07

@MagicSummer

I agree with you OP, but we are sadly in the minority. All other arguments aside, I will try to put into words why I dislike the EU so much. Back in 1973, the Common Market was presented to us as a wonderful opportunity for the UK to trade preferentially with the other 8 countries (as it was then). I was 100% behind it when the idea was not universally popular. However, over the years, the now-EU has grown into an ugly monster, masking the 'trade advantages' with ever-growing power over member countries, admitting poorer countries which the richer countries such as the UK have to support monetarily, trampling on individuality and growing ever closer to a United States of Europe, with its own Army and rules made centrally which are mandatory in every country. That is why I dislike the whole concept now. I can just imagine the outcry on MN if the 'United States of Europe' were to conscript all young men into Federal Service or worse, to go to war. I don't think many posters on here would be happy for their little darlings to go to war, would they?
Exactly that
HasaDigaEebowai · 11/12/2020 11:08

Not read the entire thread and so someone might already have pointed this out to you but we don't actually grow many beans. Not of the kind used to make baked beans anyway. Neither are we great at year round tomatoes..

With significantly less rights and with severely reduced economic prospects. Awesome.

No point whinging about it, lets just move on.

I know nothing about gyms, never even been to one (as my Lardy arse will attest to) but I used to live next door to Hancock and my cousin was rogered by a Tory at Eton so I am sure I will get a hugely profitable contract to supply gyms to you all.
I probably won’t do much other than pay large amounts of your money to shady middle men ( while keeping plenty for myself) and no gyms will be supplied but hey ho!

Namenic · 11/12/2020 11:11

@cdtaylornats - if you just look at www.worldstopexports.com/frances-top-import-partners/

And look up the equivalent for Germany and U.K. it’s exports, but pretty sure that EU makes up a bigger percentage of U.K. exports than U.K. does for EU countries. Sure individual industries may be v affected in EU (as they will be in U.K.), but overall U.K. are more exposed.

PixelatedLunchbox · 11/12/2020 11:11

OP Brexit is a divorce. We got married, took vows, and now we are buggering off and expecting to take everything. It isn't going to happen. We f*cked ourselves.

I voted remain, even though my heart wanted to vote Leave, but I knew that on balance, so many things were better with us staying in the EU. It was sheer delusion thinking we would waltz off with everything we wanted. When does that ever happen??? At this point, we'll do well to even get a semi-decent trade deal. They are going to make us suffer, and suffer we will, for quite a while. Hmm

AnnnaBananna · 11/12/2020 11:11

Incidentally, PP I've reported your post. I have millions of posts where it was made 100% clear that Brexit was nothing to do with immigration. And that's on MN alone.
My personal opinion is that immigration WAS a big factor in the vote, and I’m entitled to that opinion. “Millions of posts“ means nothing. You don’t know who those posts are from for one thing - if they’re from Remainers then they can’t possibly comment on why Leavers voted as they did. 17.4 million people voted to leave so even if millions of Leave voters said they weren’t swayed by immigration issues, that still wouldn’t reflect the opinion of the majority of voters. The British Social Attitudes Survey 2017 was organised by the National Centre for Social Research and concluded that Brexit was the result of widespread concern over immigration and freedom of movement.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 11:11

@DuncinToffee, Some good news heard from a friend of a friend. The EU negotiators were heard discussing whether 'you can argue with stupid?'. I think they're being a little hard on themselves but if they're beginning to recognise their own shortcomings, hopefully they'll start to listen to what we're telling them and give the UK what it wants. It will save the German car manufacturers their drive to Berlin to tell Frau Merkel she needs to tell the EU to give the UK what it wants. I'm a bit surprised that drive has taken so long. Does anyone know if there's been snow on the Autobahn?

Hi Boris OP.
Think you need to go back into rehab for another drying out.

Spittingchestnuts · 11/12/2020 11:14

@Noconceptofnormal

The majority are with you OP which is why Boris ended up with an 80 seat majority. People just don't want to be shouted down by the hysterical Mumsnet remoaners that leap on anything that isn't pro EU. The EU could detonate a nuclear missile in the UK's direction and the usual suspects on here would still say the EU's actions were justified.

We just need to forget about the EU and adapt a Singapore economic model.

I suspect you are right about the shy Brexiteers.

But please let's not delude ourselves about the UK adopting a Singaporean economic model.

Government expenditure as a share of gross domestic product in the United Kingdom is roughly 35.4 per cent. Compare that with the current ratio of government expenditure to gross domestic product of about 15% percent in Singapore.

As Singapore'ss PM said a couple of years ago when the idea was first discussed, “The Singapore government accounts for 16% of GDP, maybe 17%. So to say that you’re going to be like Singapore, are you going to give up two-thirds of your government spending, state pensions and national health?”

I loathe childish crap like this. I voted remain but even I can see the EU are being completely unreasonable in expecting us to be tied in to any future rules they may impose. I know intelligent people who voted leave, you really mustn't believe all the guff the msm feed you.

I would love someone from the EU to be interviewed by Andrew Neil and actually be scrutinised fairly and answer the question why can't we have tariff free trade like Norway and Iceland which would of course be of equal benefit as we import plenty of stuff from the EU? I can't seem to find the reason for them refusing, barring it being punishment for us leaving. It's like they're cutting off their noses to spite their face as my gran use to say.

Well yes, but also quite vulgar, and lacking in the nuance you need when dealing with headbanger loon Brexiteers.

remember, to you there are 187 countries in the world. To a Brexiteer only 2. Them and us (As this thread shows Grin) . They are so close to eliminating xenophobia. Just one more step and we are all human !

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 11:16

But silver linings and all that. If tomato and oranges are spitefully sabotaged, turnips can save the day. Dunkirk spirit. A flotilla of patriotic tiny vegetables and comestibles setting forth under heavy fire to save the British public. And fish.

Littleideasbigbook · 11/12/2020 11:16

This is the rub, the rage that everyone voted for themselves. I care about for sovereignty so I voted for it. I dont care about your tomatoes or your holidays. I'm cool with no deal. I'm in the north. I'm not poor. Apparently more people voted leave than voted remain and thats kind of that. One vote each and leave got more. Four years later seriously get over it and. move forward.

Tanith · 11/12/2020 11:18

The only thing the people behind Brexit were ever interested in was money.

They've made billions while they laugh at the plebs squabbling over fish.

UrAWizHarry · 11/12/2020 11:19

@Littleideasbigbook

Nobody voted to make themselves poorer. Nobody. Come on.
Plenty of people voted ignorant of the fact that they will get poorer. Ultimately what is the difference?
