EU blackmailing the UK

houseinthesnow · 11/12/2020 05:31

So it comes to pass. The EU have decided unless we agree to their unreasonable demands they will halt all travel, including air and road travel whilst still fishing in our waters apparently!

It is nothing short of piracy.

The true nature of the EU has been exposed for some time, hence our departure - but now no one can be any doubt just to the levels they will sink to.
The EU have no interest in trade relations, nor cooperation, they only seek control and power. The trading relations is and was always, window dressing to create a superstate - and it seems they are now not afraid to inflict as much damage as possible to stop a member leaving.
Even the most passionate remainer will now see how deeply disturbing this behaviour actually is.

One could argue it is an act of war in fact.

It should be treated as such.

I will happily eat beans to the end of my days than be blackmailed by the EU. We all knew it would get nasty at the end, but who they knew they were capable of this. I suppose we can't be that surprised given the past. The gloves are off now for sure - and that goes both ways we should remind them.

Hard hats on.

Oh here we go, whining about 'bullying'.

I really think I preferred it when you were all running around gloating.

Noconceptofnormal · 11/12/2020 10:53

The majority are with you OP which is why Boris ended up with an 80 seat majority. People just don't want to be shouted down by the hysterical Mumsnet remoaners that leap on anything that isn't pro EU. The EU could detonate a nuclear missile in the UK's direction and the usual suspects on here would still say the EU's actions were justified.

We just need to forget about the EU and adapt a Singapore economic model.

RedToothBrush · 11/12/2020 10:53

@AryaStarkWolf

I don't understand how people in Britain (not all obviously) thought they could leave the EU with all of the perks but none of the "downsides"? What did you expect was going to happen?
Two world wars and One World Cup. The Glorious Empire where the Sun Still Never sets.

Britain is the Greatest Nation on Earth. We are too big to fail.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 10:56

@Spittingchestnutst, I suspect some leave voters would have been happy to patriotically trade freedom and fish for wealth if it comes to that though I don't recall too many statements from politicians and the press at the time about such doom-saying predictions. Perhaps there were but they were lost in all the positive stories about sovereignty and fish. We need to stop such fear-mongering now though. Sunny uplands.

FastMovingLuxuryGoods · 11/12/2020 10:56

lol, do you even actually know what that means? You better have significant personal wealth behind you if that's what you're hoping for.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 11/12/2020 10:56

It's almost as if they're looking after their own interests...

Shocking isn't it.

Noconceptofnormal · 11/12/2020 10:57

To all the remainers, why is it do you think, that the EU will do a trade deal with Canada but not so a similar or even an equivalent deal with the UK?

What other reason is there other than to try and prevent the UK from being economically competitive and to deter other EU countries from leaving? Just curious.

Ah yes, the model where absolutely everybody in Singapore is stinking rich and there's absolutely no importation of migrant labour, that one?

poptartsarefood · 11/12/2020 10:59

I'm happy enough with no deal. We'll crack on and move forward. After a covid year and economy collapse, not getting aromatico tomatoes, holidays and various other middle class gripes are petty.

I also believe in sovereignty and the population being closer to the decision making processes. Super states don't do this

Yeah, figures.
Havanananana · 11/12/2020 11:00

We just need to forget about the EU and adapt a Singapore economic model.

We really, really don't. It's an economic model that makes the ordinary citizens virtual slaves while the elite are billionaires.

Although having written that down, it seems that the UK is not far from this already.

Cornettoninja · 11/12/2020 11:00

52% leave 48% remain.

48% of the electorate did not vote for this and have no reason to suck up and shut up about the impending juggernaut of economic devastation heading our way.

Deny the numbers as much as you want - there was no landslide victory for leavers. We would have been better off deciding our future on the flip of a coin - better informed certainly.

52% of the electorate are directly responsible for whatever happens next. I hope to god it turns out better than it looks like it will because if not you will have to explain to your children and grandchildren why they have a significantly poorer life than you had.

Pulling up the ladder after you works as a trite phrase here...

UrAWizHarry · 11/12/2020 11:01

"We'll crack on and move forward"

With significantly less rights and with severely reduced economic prospects. Awesome.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 11:01

Over time, I expect good old British ingenuity and vim will train the right sort of fish to be caught. Fish wrangling. Either that or we can have advertising so patriotic people will eat less cod and more of the right sort of fish. We could rename fish to something better. Royal herring. Union Jack mackerel.

Most likely fake but they did a good job in colouring over the name

Doublebubblebubble · 11/12/2020 11:02

OMG op.

Brexit was a choice. Brexiters chose this. As a remainer I'm loving their sudden realisation of what theyve done.

Britain wants to padlock the doors and the EU wants to padlock their own too. I dont see what you dont get. You are being a karen OP

Googlebrained · 11/12/2020 11:05

You have two perfectly good theories there. I am still undecided in Johnson's case whether its the half brain or the arrogance that led the way. In Gove's case, I'm fairly sure its just a pathological inability to do anything but lie and manage to keep a completely straight face whilst doing so. He's been very good at it on Covid related subjects and is Johnson's secret weapon when shit is hitting the fan 'DEPLOY THE GOVE TO THE PRESS. HE WILL LIE AND EVERYONE WILL JUST WATCH IN DISBELIEF AT THE SHEER AUDICITY'

That's very true @RedToothBrush. The barefaced volte face he made over whether a scotch egg was a substantial meal or not was hilarious if he didn't have so much say in how our country was run.

No wonder he was so keen on our children learning lots more facts for their exams rather than critical thinking skills. Heaven forfend that we should have a populace that can see fallacious arguments for what they are.

It’s actually not quite as significant a win for Vote Leave. It was 52% of those who voted. Around a third of the electorate voted to leave.

Let me give you a hand with this.

Its about EU countries being able to be competitive. .

Doesn't look like the EU really give a toss about the UK or Brexit, they only spent 10 mins talking about it last night at their summit. Think they've written the UK off as being beyond help.

timetest · 11/12/2020 11:06

An act of war? Hardly.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 11:07

I for one can't wait until we create a better educational programme than Erasmus. It'd need a new name even though Erasmus taught here for a few years. Something everyone could rally around like Churchill though if it were Churchill, it might be an idea to have a back up name for any exchanges with India. It could share opportunities with Ascension, St Helena and the Falklands and within the UK. Students from the SE and Scotland and Wales could go to England's North too. Win win win.
