OH thinks I'm a nutcase 😂

But in my defence...It's so pretty! It's from not on the high street.

Normally I'd buy from a normal shop but all the sets have been a bit rubbish this year and i have this weird thing where there has to be a colour scheme (I know I'm a lunatic)

This isn't for DD present by the way. She wouldn't give a shit if I wrapped them in tin foil 😅

This is for family presents.

...and my other comment said this (mostly, the other bit was about my own wrapping)

Gifts that have a ton of wrapping? Bit wasteful. We've just reached the stage where manmade materials outweigh the entire biomass of the planet, and fine, some of the wrapping is recyclable etc. but generally, I'm not a fan of this kind of indulgent pointlessness

My POV. My two contributions to this thread.

Not sure where I was this monumental, judging hypocrite?

TheWichitaWineOne · 10/12/2020 15:44

All the people saying they couldn’t justify it because others are struggling are just virtue signalling unless they are actually dialling back themselves to donate to those others in that position

We've done exactly that this year. I've seen too many people struggle this year not too. And 'virtue signalling' is a horrible phrase.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 10/12/2020 15:45

@Gardeniaofdelights

Yes. It's a fact that are so many families struggling this year, and thousands of kids will have so little. I would struggle to justify this kind of mindless excess to myself, and question whether that money couldn't have been put to better use.

Unless you’ve decided to skip Christmas this year and donate every penny you would have spent to charity, this is just mindless hypocrisy. EVERYONE spends money on things that make themselves and their families happy at Christmas, and you are not the universal arbiter of whether it’s a justifiable expense or not. So put your money where your mouth is and donate your Christmas to someone else, or pipe down with the judgmental, hypocritical crap.

@Gardeniaofdelights I returned to say similar!

Anyone having a Christmas dinner? Shame on you, eat grass and donate the money you've saved to a food bank!

Bought any presents? How could you, people are starving!

You know, you can donate to charity and have a nice Christmas. It is possible.

randomstatistics · 10/12/2020 15:45

OP it if has made you happy it is a good thing. This year has been joyless in so many ways i think people should be able to find happiness in small ways (without being told about all the starving children).

I have bought myself a nice notebook (£15) when I could've got one for £8 that would've been adequate / fit for purpose. But I didn't because I wanted the nicer one, with the nice cover, because I enjoy looking at it. Personally don't think this makes me a bad person ....

ErickBroch · 10/12/2020 15:46

Around £35 here I think - lots saved for next year actually. That includes bows and tags and ribbon etc.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 10/12/2020 15:47

Joolsin - thank you 😊 it's great isn't it!

AtLEast That's unhelpful. No one is saying that.

Knittedfairies · 10/12/2020 15:48

I like to use decent wrapping paper - and fir cones and string and other bits of 'tat' - to make my parcels look attractive. I've found you can make anything look much better that way!

Wendyhause · 10/12/2020 15:51

Wrapping paper from the Pound shop is fine and it is not that flimsy stuff which tears while you are wrapping the gifts. Same with their gift bags. They are pretty and strong and our family can not be the only one to re-use the bags year after year because let's be honest they are opened, put away and take very little wear and tear. If the matching gift tag is no longer useable then just make your own from old cards or buy a large pack of new ones from the Pound shop of course.

I HAVE paid more for gift wrapping paper and bags but they look no better. Children want to tear paper off their presents but adults try to be a little more refined and unpick the stuff. Who cares anyway, buy what you can either afford or think suitable. Anyone impressed with expensive wrapping and looking down on cheaper paper etc. need to get a grip on what is important in life.
I do like the idea of jute bags but doubt many people actually do recycle them for gifts or use them much at all. Try giving a child a jute bag rather than a crackly paper wrapped gift and they will be disappointed. Bloody Christmas! BaH!

JillofTrades · 10/12/2020 15:55

Do it if it makes you happy. I wrapped my ds birthday gifts this year in good quality paper and I felt the difference.

nosswith · 10/12/2020 15:56

Spend a lot less on wrapping paper and make a donation to charity with the unspent amount.

You are more fortunate than many, even if we had not had Covid 19.

Proudboomer · 10/12/2020 15:56

The paper reduces in cost the more you buy but have you looked at the postage date? To arrive 21st so if you have so much wrapping to do that you need to spend £45 you are not leaving yourself much time.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 16:04

Flashback to buying hand-laid 'water paper' what ever that was (it was pretty, pretty expensive too).

DryRoastPeanut · 10/12/2020 16:10

I’m wrapping in brown parcel paper again. No sellotape. Just a blob of sealing wax and string. Environmentally friendly, looks terribly rustic and is cheap as chips.

Brogues · 10/12/2020 16:18

Regarding the jute bags. Yes we return this kind of packaging in my family for reuse next time around. We’ve been doing it for over 10 years now.

Occasionally gifts get wrapped if they are particularly small or large but I general buy a roll or two in the sales for that.

OP: may I also point you in the direction of Pepin Press wrapping paper books for non-Christmas occasions? Stunning designs and quality and you can often get them quite cheaply from abe books and the like. pepinpress.com/product/wiener_werkstatte/

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2020 16:24

I was very happy as i bought mine from Ikea pre lockdown.

I love Ikea wrapping paper. Its always really nice and its crap. £6.

Anyone spending £45 on wrapping paper needs their head read. And their debit and credit cards chopping up.

Beautifully summarised.

Whatamesssss · 10/12/2020 16:26

I think it's lovely paper and educational. I love they way all the presents look under the tree beautifully wrapped.

Obviously you should be wearing sackcloth and donating every penny to the homeless. Hmm

I probably wouldn't spend that much as I get the paper in the sales in the new year, you can get some lovely quality paper for a fraction of the normal price usually. But if you want it and it makes you happy go for it. Xmas Grin

Merry Christmas

AudTheDeepAndCrispAndEven · 10/12/2020 16:28

I've probably not spent that on wrapping paper in my life so far (44 yrs)! I'm a tight wad that buys next year's paper in the sales after Christmas. A few years back I got 24 rolls for around £3. DH was not impressed when I staggered home with that lot. Just about got through it now!

"Spend a lot less on wrapping paper and make a donation to charity with the unspent amount.

When exactly did it become ok for 0woplebto tell strangers what to spend their money on?!

I don't comment on threads about expensive homes in London (for example) and tell people to sell up, donate half the value to charity and go live up North where it's cheaper.

And for the pp who said I am more fortunate than some people even pre covid. You have no fucking clue what I've been through this year. Having a spare £45 To spend on wrapping paper means nothing. Being "fortunate" isn't all about money.

We have too. Fewer gifts, far less food and booze. Our Christmases were so wasteful and we’ve decided to draw a line this year. The money saved has gone to Trussell Trust.
RedToothBrush · 10/12/2020 16:31

@TheWichitaWineOne

why spend all that money on something that's going to be ripped apart, if you've got that amount to throw around donate it to a charity for feeding hungry children or something

Yes. It's a fact that are so many families struggling this year, and thousands of kids will have so little. I would struggle to justify this kind of mindless excess to myself, and question whether that money couldn't have been put to better use.

See i won't use the 'won't you think poor children starving in Africa' defence. I just think you can get nice wrapping paper for a lot less, thats perfectly functional for the job required.

I just don't get why you'd waste your money on bloody wrapping paper of all things

Buy a meal, treat yourself, donate to charity, get shitted, buy a present for someone else i dont really care.

I just don't get why you'd prioritise your money on bloody wrapping paper. For that price I'd expect it to be gold leaf and self wrapping!

Oooohbehave · 10/12/2020 16:33

Well I wouldn't. I got some nice recyclable paper from Aldi for a quid, but if it makes you happy then why not.
