To want to know a benefit of brexit?

Dishwashersaurous · 10/12/2020 10:53

I know that brexit has been done to death. But as we crash into a no deal and inevitable queues at the border my children are asking what is the benefit of brexit.

Could someone please tell me a tangible benefit that I can tell them- as I am struggling to think of anything

No - but we know that the main reason Brexiteers voted for Brexit was a perception that it would reduce immigration. Who can forget the ‘breaking point’ poster? I would therefore be astonished if a majority of people for Brexiteers understood that net migration numbers would remain the same, but numbers of non-white, non-Christian immigrants would increase.

Of course a lot of people voted leave to reduce immigration. What is wrong with that? If you don't allow people to vote to do that, you get extreme right wing parties just like they have in Germany, Austria , Italy, Spain, France etc.

Would you rather we had extreme right wing parties like they have in these countries?

Of course Leavers realised that it would result in more non-white immigration. Perhaps not all, but most.

But actually, there probably won't be more non-white immigration as companies can still recruite white europeans and will continue to do so because of white privilege.[/quote]

oh dear....

Please educate yourself. The countries mentioned DO NOT HAVE EXTREME RIGHT WING PARTIES!

2 EU country has almost extreme (still a bit of way to go, but not much) right wing: Poland and Hungary.

But actually, there probably won't be more non-white immigration as companies can still recruite white europeans and will continue to do so because of white privilege.
oh dear2.....
This is simply stupid

I have no idea whether this was linked to Brexit BUT

Pre-referendum, the UK was very nasty to non EU tourists and even visa holders. Every time you left the country and flew back, you got the pleasure of being grilled by border entry staff who grilled you with endless questions like how you got your residence card, how long have you been married to your husband etc etc. And even if you had a 5 year residency visa, you had to queue up with all the tourists.

Post referendum, I guess the UK realized it couldn't keep pissing off global travellers and so citizens from select countries could use the e passport gates. It's lucky cos I am a citizen of such a country. So now when I return to the UK, I can just use the e passport gates and don't need to wait.

There are many benefits but it’s not something that should ever of been a public vote as it’s complicated.

I have seen countless non-EU mums who didn't speak english despite living here for decades.

But funnily enough English immigrants, sorry ex-pats, in Spain, who don't speak a word of the language are fine. And that's not because they have a husband from a culture which keeps women down.

bellinisurge · 10/12/2020 19:15

I love to see the straws being clutched at here. Shouldn't you all be out preparing. The Spaffmeister just told you to.

Australia does this to non Aussies. I had a 4 year visa and was treated the same as you describe above, whenever I returned to Australia after a break. It's called immigration control.

Like he told them “No deal would be a complete failure of statecraft”
hopingforonlychild · 10/12/2020 19:41

@DianaOfTheLakes maybe but i dont need to go through it anymore! I used to have a German 5 year visa before I moved back to london and was never treated like that. I think Anglo countries have this system of tough immigration control as English speaking countries tend to attract more economic migrants. So they have to treat everyone like that despite the fact that a Canadian citizen or Singapore citizen is very unlikely to want to become an illegal immigrant in the UK. Am glad that UK border control recognizes it. They used to try and persuade me to pay money for their rubbish registered traveller program.

Boris was elected to deliver it, how is it the governments fault, the people voted leave

Adf/National Front in France/The Freedom Party of Austria:
All of these are on the fringes. You made it sound like they were in control of anything. Apart from their dinner they don't have control.
The Hungarian and Polish not obviously far right ones are actually in power.

The issue here on this thread is not white privilege.
Trying to steer derail a conversation is a nice tactic, but it is oh, so obvious.

lljkk · 10/12/2020 20:04

ok, Farage tbf, did say expect more black immigrants after Brexit.

But immigration a non-issue? Net migration cut to 50k?
I won't hold my breath on those predictions.

  1. I never said that.
  2. No, I don't think it's fine. Wherever you live or plan to live for longer you should take the time and brainpower to learn their language. I'm brushing up on my German atm.

My partner made no effort for my birthday
Etc

Do those people know that cutting ties with the EU will mean immigrants from other areas of the world will increase over time so new businesses are more likely to be Halal rather than Polish supermarkets?

People don't talk about immigration because we have an economy that relies heavily on foreign labour whether its people picking fruit or NHS Staff. If people want more British people in those jobs then they need to pay more tax so incentives like bursaries for nurses can be reintroduced. The reality is that people would rather pay less tax than invest in education and workers so that British people make choices like working for the NHS

TheWichitaWineOne · 10/12/2020 20:45

The handful of Tory hardline Brexiteers poisoning the country for generations to come have been desperate for a deregulated society. This is the stuff of their dreams.

A brave new world of less safe workplaces (this will be catastrophic), food standards stealthily being dropped via all kinds of means, rivers getting more and more toxic, water infrastructure suffering and so on.

The idea that we might keep pace with the EU on these things horrifies them.

The whole immigration/getting our country back/borders crap was a smokescreen for the lunatics to persuade turkeys to vote for a lifetime of fucking Brexit Christmases.

It still beggars belief that people VOTED for this.

bellinisurge · 10/12/2020 20:54

"When the most common boys name ^wasn't Mohammed and when the majority of under 20s in many of our capital cities weren't 'British non-white'. They don't like the fact that there are many more Polish and Romanian people then there were a few decades ago and that the areas some of them grew up in are now filled with halal butchers and mosques."

Pakistan and Bangladesh aren't in Europe. You do know that, right? There aren't many mosques or halal butchers in Poland or Romania.

Maybe you could put up the kind of signs my Mum saw when she came here from Ireland in the 1950s to work in the NHS because there weren't enough British women to do the jobs there : No Irish No Blacks No Dogs. Happy days of yore.

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/12/2020 20:58

@ILoveAllRainbowsx
Why do you keep pushing BAME agenda into everything?
Even if you are purple you will be hurt by Brexit in one form or another.
There are no upsides....

If in the UK atm there are massive BAME issues (according to the media and ppl there are, so let's take that as a fact) then what do you think will happen when more BAME people pour into the country. People who have no intention of assimilating into this culture, into Europe.

And I do question immigration rising from other places instead of the EU. EU ppl came here because FOM made it easy. If you need a visa then it is not easy (min salary, admin, etc...)
So essentially the UK will be left with a gaping hole in some industries because those pure british ppl (whatever their color) won't or can't fill in the gaps.
But hey, let's go with Brexit is going to be fun and games and sunshine!
Oh, btw.... finance industry is moving/moved to Germany. Software dev companies who used London as a hub to other EU countries have moved. That is a lot of tax money in the minus column, both in terms of corp. tax and PAYE.

@ReadyFreddy
They don't like the fact that there are many more Polish and Romanian people then there were a few decades ago and that the areas some of them grew up in are now filled with halal butchers and mosques.

Do you think these people comprehend that leaving the EU will only make it more likely to have even more halal and mosques? That instead of similar cultural background and ethics there will be an influx of totally incompatible belief systems?

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/12/2020 21:01

The UK has not been/is not part of the Schengen area. Meaning: the UK had and has every right to do what it pleases with it's borders. The fact that brexiters wave this as an achievement is ridiculous.

After 9 pages there still had not been one true benefit mentioned. The discussion is lacking facts. I'm really interested though what people think will be better after jan 1. Especially with a no-deal brexit australian style brexit.
