To want to know a benefit of brexit?

Dishwashersaurous · 10/12/2020 10:53

I know that brexit has been done to death. But as we crash into a no deal and inevitable queues at the border my children are asking what is the benefit of brexit.

Could someone please tell me a tangible benefit that I can tell them- as I am struggling to think of anything

"Oh, yes, of course, millions of BAME Europeans have come here in the last 20 years. I must have missed them.

I have never met a BAME european."

All look the same, do they? Hmm

baroqueandblue · 10/12/2020 16:33

I have never met a BAME european.

They've been spared

TheRubyRedshoes · 10/12/2020 16:38

I never understand these types of posts.
How can you not know the benefits? They may not be worth brexit to you but they are there. I was always taught to look at the pros and cons for everything and then make choices? I could argue just as much for brexit as against, I really think when it comes t things as big as brexit people should have done lots of research before voting?

and Remainers say the Leavers are racist! So it looks like it is the Remainers who are racist.

Aha, you got me - what a zinger! Clearly, someone who moves here using their right of free movement within the European bloc - with which, up until now, we shared many regulations and customs - is, on the balance of probabilities, likely to find integration into society practically easier than someone who moves here from outside the EU.

But I’m sure you’re right that all the people who voted leave on the basis that our former colonies would finally get justice in the immigration queue. Did you ever see the video of the man outside the polling station who said he’d voted to leave to stop Africans coming over?

MaxNormal · 10/12/2020 16:45

@ilovesooty I'm clutching at straws, I know. Because this is a fucking horror show. A crash-out right when the country is financially and psychologically exhausted from almost a year of covid restrictions.
So that's all I've got. What a shit silver lining though.

SunscreenCentral · 10/12/2020 16:45

Much ground was covered in the hilarious 1000 post thread of earlier this week.

Opined by a mumsnetter upset at France being big meanies considering all the holidays, cheese and truffle oil she’s bought over the years 🤯😂🤣 The nerve of them

And yet here you are without any facts or actual benefits. But we should believe you that there are some. Maybe at the back of the sofa, under the pillows....
Cattenberg · 10/12/2020 17:13

Yes, for BAME and working class white people it certainly is.

I must have imagined all the young working class people I met while working in a warehouse in the Netherlands. They came from various countries and several were from BAME backgrounds. Also, a significant minority of Dutch people are of Turkish or Indonesian descent.

I dare say the EU will manage without British migrant workers. It’s the young Brits who’ll miss out!

So one person voted for an idiotic reason means that every other Leaver did?

Also, I think you should read about how Hungary and Poland are currently holding the EU to ransom because they don't agree with the laws that the Western countries in Europe want to impose on them.

No - but we know that the main reason Brexiteers voted for Brexit was a perception that it would reduce immigration. Who can forget the ‘breaking point’ poster? I would therefore be astonished if a majority of people for Brexiteers understood that net migration numbers would remain the same, but numbers of non-white, non-Christian immigrants would increase.

As to your second point, I think this is a fundamental Brexiteer fallacy. No one has ever said the EU is perfect in every way. It’s not. It has problems. It doesn’t follow that Britain is better off outside it. The question on the ballot paper wasn’t ‘is the EU perfect in every way?’ You can’t point to a problem within the EU to justify Brexit. You need to show that the majority of Britons will be economically and socially better off outside it in the short, medium and long term. And there is overwhelming evidence suggesting they won’t.

Cattenberg · 10/12/2020 17:40

So a few BAME brits will lose out going to work in Europe.

And working class white Brits too, remember.

What about the millions of BAME brits who would lose out if they had to compete with jobs with white europeans?

Plenty of British people are white, but some are BAME. Plenty of EU citizens are white, but some are BAME. Admittedly, some EU countries are less diverse than others, but I still don’t see how closing the UK’s borders will help to tackle racism in the UK.

We are not forced to increasingly merge our common law legal system with civil law systems in the continent is an obvious one

This is nonsensical.
If someone isn't hired because they are BAME, the fact that queue for the job is now Jenny, Myra, John, Kayleigh and Peter rather than Jenny, Vladimir, Myra, Jean, John, Kayleigh and Peter will make no difference.
If someone isn't hiring BAME for being BAME, they still won't hire a BAME. 🤷🏻

But what if the other people in the queue are Mohammed, Syed, Alim etc?

Well according to you they are behind all of these so this is how I asssume you imagined the queue before all the BAME people🤷🏻
Again.
If someone isn't hiring BAME because they are BAME that will not change simply because there will be few less white people in that queue.

No. Because you will just never admit that I am right. That it makes no difference. If company hires a white person, rather than bame, they will still hire a white person.

This is totally new spin on "They are stealing our jobs" I have to say.
