Is it me or do most conspiracy theorists believe in EVERY conspiracy?

Dh knows a covid denier, so do I. Both of these people seem to believe in EVERY conspiracy.

Lizard Royal family, anti vax, no such thing as covid ( but also it was man made in a lab whilst not existing?) 9/11, David Ike, moon landings, micro chips from Bill Gates, you name it, they believe it.

If I made a video saying that clouds are really man made to hide surveillance cameras, or that pee is really plasma bleeding out because of toxins- they would believe me, even if its just BS I made up on a whim.

I am sure there is some truth in some conspiracies, but buying into all of them? Why?

I'm not bashing conspiracy theorists, just the wholesale buying into every conspiracy that I struggle with. It's like the only thing that matters is that someone is out to get people.

Or is this sometimes paranoia for some people? Because in a few people there is no differentiation. They just believe in each one as it comes out. Every single time.

Believing in one crackpot 'theory' does seem to make it more likely you will believe in another.

I could predict with almost perfect accuracy which of my acquaintances would throughout this bloody pandemic post repeatedly to facebook with 'questions' and 'I'm not telling you what to believe but d0 yOuR 0Wn ResEArch' type posts and each and every one of them also believes 9/11 was an inside job. Funny, that.

D4rwin · 11/12/2020 14:39

All of them? I think they would have to be highly malleable people with a disability affecting their understanding or to be delusional in some way.

Isolatedizzy · 11/12/2020 14:44

I've noticed that they seem to be at either end of the Political spectrum - purely from my Facebook feed!
So the momentum lot seem to be antivax, Bill Gates and 'They' are out to track us, every quote from 1984 they can get their hands on and the Brexitiers seem to be COVID deniers!

It's very interesting actually!

The centre, centre left majority just seem to be following the rules, looking forward to the vaccine & getting their lives back!

Anyone who makes a claim that 9/11 'was done by the US government' is a disgusting individual as well as a total idiot. Claiming the government murdered 3000 civilians on home soil despite there being no evidence whatsoever is not only moronic it is also vile

Oh dear. I don't think there is any concrete evidence as to who is behind 9/11, but there is lots of concrete evidence of the US government being indifferent to the collateral damage of the deaths of US citizens. Just off the top of my head, what about the syphilis experiment, where they let a cohort of people to believe they were being treated for syphilis when in fact they were left to live and die horribly?

unmarkedbythat · 11/12/2020 14:57

Oh, well done, @Coyoacan, that's some of the best whataboutery I've seen on her in ages.

Coyoacan · 11/12/2020 15:00

@unmarkedbythat

Nothing to do with whataboutery and everything to do with people who argue that the US government is incapable of deliberately harming citizens.

TheSandman · 11/12/2020 15:18

While in no way trying to condone it I suspect that far from being 'indifferent' to the fate of their citizens in the syphilis experiment the powers that be were very interested in the results.

And there is a very big difference between a covert 'experiment' and a vastly public catastrophe like 9/11.

Just leaving this here, Mitchell and Webb’s take on conspiracy theories. I wish they would do one about Covid deniers.

Brilliant 😂

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but the syphilis medical experiment was appalling. It was only or largely done to black men, kept them in total ignorance and denied them medical treatment for their disease. It was awful and a product of racism at the time. Nothing to do with conspiracy theories though.
Coyoacan · 11/12/2020 16:07

"knittingaddict"

I wasn't actually citing that as an example of a conspiracy, but as an example of what members of the US government are capable of doing to US citizens. However, what definition of conspiracy are you using that excludes the syphilis experiment?

FarTooSkinny · 11/12/2020 16:15

@Coyoacan it is non sequitur to state that because the US government performed medical experiments on unsuspecting individuals that they then openly murdered 3000 people in a massive terrorist attack.

knittingaddict · 11/12/2020 16:17

Because the syphilis experiment was a product of it's times. Black lives were expendable. I don't think they would have done the same with white men and the title of the experiment confirms that - Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male. Horrendous.

I don't see how anyone can say that because they did this one horrible, racist thing that the US is capable of killing thousands in a fake terrorist attack. An attack that killed people of many nationalities, including white people.

One is a fact and shows how people in authority can exploit others with impunity, the other is a conspiracy theory.

Coyoacan · 11/12/2020 16:47

From what I see here, the anti-conspiracy theory people are just as short on critical thinking as the totally gullible conspiracy theorists.

So according to knittingaddict, I don't see how anyone can say that because they did this one horrible, racist thing that the US is capable of killing thousands in a fake terrorist attack. An attack that killed people of many nationalities, including white people

The fact that white US citizens were killed in 9/11 is proof that the US government wasn't involved.

I actually only used the syphilis trials as an example off the top of my head, but now my entire argument has been reduced to that one example.

I haven't a clue whether the US government was behind the 9/11 event, I just believe that said government is totally capable of it and using that as an excuse to go on to kill over a million Iraqis

knittingaddict · 11/12/2020 16:53

All right, you want me to be blunt. Anyone who believes that the US government faked the terrorist attack on 9/11 does not deserve to be taken seriously. They have lost touch with reality and need serious help.

Hope that helps.

FarTooSkinny · 11/12/2020 17:05

@knittingaddict you have hit the nail on the head

ChristmasFluff · 11/12/2020 17:24

Yeah, cos it's not like the US government would ever consider faking a terrorist attack that would kill its own citizens:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods

If JFK had sanctioned it, it would have gone ahead
