Is it me or do most conspiracy theorists believe in EVERY conspiracy?

HMSBeagle · 09/12/2020 21:03

Dh knows a covid denier, so do I. Both of these people seem to believe in EVERY conspiracy.

Lizard Royal family, anti vax, no such thing as covid ( but also it was man made in a lab whilst not existing?) 9/11, David Ike, moon landings, micro chips from Bill Gates, you name it, they believe it.

If I made a video saying that clouds are really man made to hide surveillance cameras, or that pee is really plasma bleeding out because of toxins- they would believe me, even if its just BS I made up on a whim.

I am sure there is some truth in some conspiracies, but buying into all of them? Why?

I'm not bashing conspiracy theorists, just the wholesale buying into every conspiracy that I struggle with. It's like the only thing that matters is that someone is out to get people.

Or is this sometimes paranoia for some people? Because in a few people there is no differentiation. They just believe in each one as it comes out. Every single time.

Stuff like Facebook listening to your phone calls then later directing advertisements from vendors related to a product you expressed an interest in. Like wtf! What right do you have to earwig on me taking to my mum about wanting to buy a winter coat

canigooutyet · 10/12/2020 01:02

I have an interest in conspiracies. I do not believe in them all.

The thing with conspiracies, is that as history has shown, some things that were touted at the time as conspiracy have turned out to be true years/decades later through documentation and FOI requests etc globally.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 10/12/2020 01:03

I do find the anti Semitic in many conspiracy theories really awful and unapologetically vile.

ClarenceBoddicker · 10/12/2020 01:03

Can’t defend lizard gate. Nuts. Does he still claim it?

Mavedrai · 10/12/2020 01:14

I lend some credence to the theory that Jeffrey Epstein was murdered (though I would be very much surprised if the Clintons were behind it haha). Conspiracy theories stem from distrust of the government and others in power. Some degree of distrust is healthy and reasonable, but a lot of theorists go overboard. I don't for a minute believe that 9/11 was a false flag or that the Queen is a lizard person.

Just leaving this here, Mitchell and Webb’s take on conspiracy theories. I wish they would do one about Covid deniers.

ClarenceBoddicker · 10/12/2020 01:22

Is Epstein being murdered a conspiracy theory? I thought it was just something everybody believed to be true!

Coyoacan · 10/12/2020 01:24

The two extremes are mad: the OP who thinks that there has never been a conspiracy and people that believe the Royal family are lizards. Unfortunately people like the OP are so trained to dismiss any idea that doesn't come with the deal of the establishment on it.

ClarenceBoddicker · 10/12/2020 01:29

Was unfair to you Mavedrai as the conspiracy bit relates to who did and why but no sane person thinks he committed suicide. Was supposed to be under 24/7 surveillance and the CCTV inexplicably somehow malfunctioned at exactly the wrong moment

Barkspawn · 10/12/2020 01:42

I saw a post recently stating that Margaret Keenan made an illuminati symbol while getting vaccinated which proves... something. These people will latch onto anything.

@Nottherealslimshady

Have alot of experience in that community. It comes from that mentality when your husband has an affair so anytime he's late from a night out or doesn't answer his phone you think he's having sex with someone.

The government, in probably every country, has lied and has often been corrupt. Once you find out about one lie, you see lies everywhere. Sometimes they're telling the truth but how do you ever trust them again?

My husband fell down this rabbit hole and started believing everything certain youtubers said, eventually the youtuber was proven to be lying aswell. Now he's much better at looking at whole situations and all evidence and coming to his own conclusions.

I dont think we landed on the moon, the technology just didn't exist but I think scientists did originally think it was, technology was amazing to everyone then, but it was really like the flintstones.

I also think America did 9/11 there's actually a government document from years before discussing how they could fake an attack like that and when you read about what happened it just doesn't make sense. Governments sacrifice citizens lives all the time for the benefit of the country as a whole.

I think there is something to this. As soon as you see one crazy thing that seems unbelievable, and yet it turns out to be true, all kinds of other things because plausible.

Like the government of the US wanted to kill Fidel Catro with an exploding cigar. Or failing that, embarrass him with one that would make his beard fall out.

That is so ridiculous that you might believe all kinds of things about them after that.

There are plenty of crazy health scandals, or things the Russians or Chinese government have done. Old conspiracies from 100 years ago that we now know about.

It becomes difficult for people to find a line that seems really uncrossable.

Planet42 · 10/12/2020 04:38

I have a friend who’s the same op. The virus is a hoax. The virus is man made. The virus is really 5g. Bill Gates wants to chip us all so the vaccine will be compulsory and if I don’t get the vaccine for my dc, they’ll get taken away and used by the elite paedophile rings.
It was when I couldn’t convince her that wouldn’t happen, I just stepped away.
Apparently I’m the one who has no critical thinking. I just believe the main stream media which is for sheep.

One point about David Icke - He had been going on about paedophile rings involving Jimmy Saville and all the way to the royal family for years though. So I’ll give him that.

bobbiester · 10/12/2020 07:34

The most compelling evidence AGAINST many conspiracies is Donald Trump.

E.g. if US government really had aliens stashed away he would have blabbed.

Trump is also pretty good evidence that the "deep state" is pretty useless when it comes to getting rid of Presidents.

WotWouldCJDo · 10/12/2020 07:40

Got a lot of time for David Icke as many of his ‘crazy’ theories have proven to not be crazy in retrospect.

Can you give us some examples?

GervaseFen · 10/12/2020 07:59

Greats thread. I'd love examples of things people thought were conspiracies that turned out to be true.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2020 12:26

Just watching the 1991 Icke interview now. While we still aren't doing particularly well when it comes to tolerance and support for people with MH issues, I'm astonished that as recently as that they thought it was a good idea to put him in front of a jeering audience!

It's painful isn't it? A horrible side of Wogan, prodding him for laughs and jeering.
Turolive · 10/12/2020 12:34

David Icke is an anti-semite. He'll get no sympathy from me.

Simplyunacceptable · 10/12/2020 12:37

Yeah, my friend is majorly into them all. He’s a flat Earther, believes in a group of Jewish elitists running the world (which I found fairly upsetting given the fact my Dad is Jewish so the anti-Semitic undertone was not well received by me), the Queen sucks children’s blood, Michelle Obama is a man and Joan Rivers was going to expose them so they killed her off, aliens exist.

I’ve heard it all at this stage.

Are you still friends with them despite the anti semitism?
JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2020 12:43

Got a lot of time for David Icke as many of his ‘crazy’ theories have proven to not be crazy in retrospect.

Summary of Icke theories in 1991 interview:

Earth is going to go through series of geological changes
Turquoise is good and black is evil
I'm the Son of God
Devil is trying to destroy the world
Our thoughts are creating an energy field
The devil is drinking our bad thoughts
Saddam Hussein is dead (not back then he wasn't)
There will be earthquakes and volcanic eruptions (yes, because geology)
They will happen later that year, or the world will end

Katgolde · 10/12/2020 12:46

I think there are elements of truth in some of them. It would be naive to think that no powerful organisation is ever dishonest, secretive or hungry for more money and power. Many of them are crazy but I wouldn't rule them all out.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/12/2020 12:48

Sorry, I hope that doesn't come across like I'm now mocking Icke myself! I'm just responding to the pp who says he's right about some things. I

Just remember - if you make enough predictions, sooner or later some of them will come true. Would you listen to a weather forecaster who got it wrong 99% of the time?

longwayoff · 10/12/2020 12:50

It's not you OP. It's the lizards.

ClarenceBoddicker · 10/12/2020 16:12

One example is he said Jimmy Saville was a paedophile. Some of his stuff is out there for sure though and wouldn’t just blithely believe most stuff. It’s a bit unfair to bracket alien abductions and 5G produced viruses with Epstein was most likely murdered though. I understand the post though. Some people do believe every conspiracy theory but some are things are labelled conspiracy theories to shut people down and to portray anyone who thinks this x y z inconvenience a loon.
