To ask you to put your house number where I can see it?

I'm helping out a friend who is doing deliveries from his restaurant to try and keep afloat. It's dark and it's raining - google maps can only take me so far. Would it kill you to put a number on your house? Or even on your gate so I can see it from the road? Also, if you live at 100 Main Road, please don't just put your house name because it sounds posh, your dinner will be very cold.

If I'm expecting someone I'll always put the outside light on so the door plate is more visible, as someone whose eyes aren't great I can totally get your frustration!

Use sat nav, this strange wizardry will take you straight to the door if you enter postcode & street number.

It definitely doesn't always take you to the exact door at all.

Nice sarky response Roselilly36 but a) it doesn't, at all, and b) OP already said that.

Satnav for my house takes you to halfway down the street. Where my partner used to live, it was round the corner on a weird curved street. It is not exact and very often takes you to the wrong place :)

Coldilox · 08/12/2020 19:12

I used to live in a house that only had a name, no number. All the houses on the (reasonably long) street were the same. Must have been a nightmare for deliveries

Ours too. I've had to start leaving notes with my delivery saying 'house with the blue coloured X car on drive' because the sat nav always takes people half way down the road.
Squirrelblanket · 08/12/2020 19:13

My house (no 25) has a huge and visible number outside. Still doesn't stop delivery people delivering to 25a or 25b. 🤷‍♀️

Duvetdweller · 08/12/2020 19:14

Thanks @Roselilly36 - when the satnav takes you in the vicinity of the address it would be helpful if of say the half dozen houses I can see, they had a number on! @StartingGrid you are my favourite type of customer.

Descriptive instructions are especially helpful. I had one the other day which was really hard to find in the dark but would have been much easier if they’d said IS ALSO A CATTERY

We do the same - 'white door, green bench outside'. It doesn't help that our street has much fewer odds than evens, even though it looks like it should have roughly the same on both sides!

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 08/12/2020 19:18

I don't have a house number - we have the house name where it can be clearly seen. Our postcode only covers six houses and when ever I order anything for delivery I describe exactly where the house is, what it looks like, what it is opposite and what is parked on the drive. Oh and how far we are from the junction. I can't magic up for the house, I wish I could but our street was built piecemeal with everything from Georgian to new builds completed in 2019 so we all only have names. I also frequently direct lost delivery people to the "hidden houses" that are accessed by a tiny footpath that no one can ever spot.

Meepmeeep · 08/12/2020 19:19

What’s the excuse for those delivery drivers who can’t find a very clearly numbered house. A house with a sign with both number and street name displayed in a prominent place!

Duvetdweller · 08/12/2020 19:20

You are definitely not on the hit list @DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes

My house only has a name so I give detailed directions in the ‘information for driver’ box if there is one. I do the same when ordering by phone. However, the drivers clearly don’t get the instructions as 99% of the time I get a call saying “I can’t find you. I’m by the post office.” If they had read my instructions they’d be nowhere near the sodding post office!

Betsyboo87 · 08/12/2020 19:21

YANBU. I was told by a paramedic once that it’s really important to have clear house numbers displayed. When they’re looking for a house in an emergency it saves crucial time.

Murinae · 08/12/2020 19:21

We live in a house with only a name and all the other houses on the lane only have names too. It’s a nightmare getting deliveries. I can definitely understand your frustration!

MrsIronfoundersson · 08/12/2020 19:22

We have a black metal door number on the door, number in frosted glass on the fanlight (with light behind on) but it's the 'not a flat! First house in the road with big trees in garden' on the delivery instructions that help the most I think! I tried to find somebody's house the other day and I swear 99% of houses in the road didn't have a clear number on.

lanthanum · 08/12/2020 19:22

Perhaps the restaurant should ask people to download the what3words app and use that.

Duvetdweller · 08/12/2020 19:23

I sometime feel like Hugh Grant in Love Actually - ‘does Natalie live here?’

MikeUniformMike · 08/12/2020 19:23

I'd recommend that the numbers to be clearly visible when it is dark, and that people who live on roads where large detached houses are numbered 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 3, etc to add a note.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 08/12/2020 19:23

@Duvetdweller phew. I hate not having a number being "Such and such house" in a mid 20th C semi sounds so fucking pretentious but half of the town is the same.

cate16 · 08/12/2020 19:23

My house have got a massive number - it can be read from the top of the road, delivery drivers still get it wrong :( Our road has numbers, then 4 named houses... then the numbers continue.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 08/12/2020 19:23

Always put the light on near the front door so its lit up for them, though my front door is tucked out the way it's not straight on when you enter the garden

DynamoKev · 08/12/2020 19:23

Google maps tries to send people along a non-existent road it has invented to get to us; which leaves them stranded in the new housing estate nearby.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 08/12/2020 19:25

We have recently moved onto a lovely tiny estate of 40 odd houses. New houses etc. Lots of people putting up Christmas wreaths on their lovely new doors. Covering their lovely new house numbers! The postie is going to hate us!! NB I've not done mine yet - I'm considering labeling the house somewhere else too!
