To wonder how people make it to adulthood without knowing

That a Christmas tree decoration is called a "bauble", not "ball ball"? Or how they make it through junior school without knowing the difference between "his" and "he's"? What happens in schools these days and don't people ever read anything?

Bloody typos🤦

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:39
@Janegrey333 No, he definitely doesn’t teach English. He had to retake the English test when he did his PGCE as he failed it the first time. He’s not a PE teacher though!
Does he teach Design Technology?!

sausagepastapot · 09/12/2020 19:40

YY to 'balling' your eyes out.

Give me strength.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 09/12/2020 19:42

I once saw on a thread on here someone say her husband approached a problem "like a bowl in a china shop"! 😀

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:43

Yes, also, to “reign in that behaviour”. Don’t they know that it doesn’t make sense?

LastChristmas20 · 09/12/2020 19:44

You can't even blame people not googling for not knowing how to spell something.

At the peak of the Zoflora hype I was in a Zoflora Facebook group.

I believe it was called Zoflora addicts or something of that nature.

It contained hundreds of posts about Zoflora. And many photos of bottles of Zoflora.

Yet an alarming percentage of posters would put the photos of the boxes/bottles and yet still type "Zaflora"

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:47

@Sarahrellyboo1987

Imagine getting to adult life and thinking you’re superior than other people just because you have better spelling and grammar?!?

YABU. Get over it.

I’m afraid that is not the way it works.
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/12/2020 19:49

@Cam77

'Cowpol'

Probably just her accent. Unless you want RP/estuary insisted on in schools (pitch forks out in 80% of the country) I'm not sure you can pull people up for that stuff.

I'd have thought estuary English would have been one of the worse culprits for putting Ws in place of Ls...
Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:50

Some people are surprised that the word Pacific is the name of an ocean because they tend to use it instead of specific.

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:54

I really don’t buy the favourite excuses for poor spelling and grammar: pronunciation and accent.
It’s laughable. Why not just educate yourself? Never too late and all that.

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 19:56

“Estuary English” is not a pinnacle of anything. 😆

Nettleskeins · 09/12/2020 19:58

Fine toothed comb not fine toothcomb

Nettleskeins · 09/12/2020 19:58

Or tooth'd...

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 09/12/2020 20:00

I read a lot as a child, so I can spell most things but I can't pronounce a lot of words because I have never heard them spoken, just seen them spelt. Some people might think I am thick, but I don't care.
Some people didn't have great childhoods. Neglect/abuse/trauma etc has drastic effects on educational outcomes. Some may have learning disabilities. Some may just not be academic. Some probably went to shit schools.
But I think it's really, really bad manners to correct or comment on peoples mistakes unless you are actively teaching/tutoring them. If you can understand what they mean, let it go.

lockeddownandcrazy · 09/12/2020 20:00

Partly because schools are not encouraged to correct spelling and grammar because of PC that says it is hurtful to the child and doesn't focus on the content. Even on things like Facebook people are slated if they even comment on spelling or grammatical issues.

People don't read books, they text with autocorrect and do not proof read - they rely on word to spell check for them!

Nettleskeins · 09/12/2020 20:03

What I find interesting is that "dyslexia" is often an auditory processing thing rather than just a "reading" thing.
Ds2 has difficulty pronouncing some words correctly AND he can't spell. I'm not sure which came first. He is otherwise articulate and grammatical.

SarahAndQuack · 09/12/2020 20:04

@Janegrey333

I really don’t buy the favourite excuses for poor spelling and grammar: pronunciation and accent. It’s laughable. Why not just educate yourself? Never too late and all that.
But most educated people don't judge others for poor spelling and grammar, so in a way, it's useful, as it tells you immediately if the person you're chatting to is an insecure snob, doesn't it?
Hkyvvse · 09/12/2020 20:04

I’ve never heard these pronunciations before?

Zoejj77 · 09/12/2020 20:09

Of it’s not already been mentioned - add to that Spag bowl - like really???

I went to school with a girl who genuinely thought a pineapple was pinepeople- she couldn’t even say pineapple. Kind of funny I suppose

opinionatedfreak · 09/12/2020 20:12

Or you get the opposite.... my brother is a massive reader and intelligent.

There are a couple of words that he uses regularly that he mispronounces as I think he started using them after reading them....

Every time he says one of them I mean to work the conversation back to it and tell him in a non snarky way and then forget.... until the next time he does it!

Can't even think of an example as I type here.

I spent years (pre-friends) mis-pronouncing Phoebe and when Harry Potter first came out didn't have a clue how to say Hermione...

opinionatedfreak · 09/12/2020 20:14

And despite being a well educated professional my use of apostrophes is unreliable.

Amidst a school change I somehow managed to skip any formal teaching on the subject and have been winging it for the last 30 years.

Mostly I catch it. Occasionally I don't and include a howler in a written document designed for a wide circulation.

Sigh.

Staffy1 · 09/12/2020 20:15

@Hkyvvse

I’ve never heard these pronunciations before?
It's not the pronunciation, that's how it's written, (by several people on our local FB page and other social media sites). Even an Amazon search for "ball balls" brings up baubles.

Some one on my FB, just posted about their Christmas Reef on their door.

Ireallywantsomechips · 09/12/2020 20:18

I see a lot of people saying “can’t be asked”, I always thought it was I “can’t be arsed” WHICH IS IT?! Is it a regional thing or what?

Janegrey333 · 09/12/2020 20:23

@SarahAndQuack
I do hope that made you feel better. Smile
